It says 1709.

And yeah. Everything but Chrome and Open Office shut down and then the main monitor goes black and the 2nd monitor goes unresponsive to the point the only thing I can do is push the reset button on the top of the case.

Yeah that's not good.

Did it do a big update when you turned it on first?

Nope. And now Discord isn't picking up my headset anymore.

Do you want to connect again?

We may have to. This thing has crashed six or more times today.

... and thus ends the tale. Tune in next week when Tzu builds his own ham radio to talk to Australia and learn secret tips of kangaroo hunting.

Heh... Actually it hasn't given me trouble one since that day. I think it was the Twitch app but the wife has been using it just fine.

Now I am in search of a proper chair and keyboard. And after those, a mouse.

Suggestions?

Ahhhhh Tzu falls into the abyss of PCMR peripherals...

Obviously give Corsair a look. They are the big players along with Logitech.

Razer is a gamer favorite, and I have a Naga in my bag, but I find they are expensive for the features. The Naga is in my bag because I don't use it anymore. I used to have a complete Razer setup. (Yes, I have the phone).

I started to look slightly out there brands. Currently, I have G.Skill KM780 Keyboard with Cherry MX browns. I have their Ripjaws laser mouse as well, but I use that at work.

For a mouse I'm using a Roccat Tyon, it has a ton of features and a fair amount of programmable buttons and a flip so each button can do 2 things. Plus, when you change the DPI you can have it announce it in a shouty German accent, it reminds me of my mum.

I've liked my Roccat's so much I am currently looking at these items.

Roccat Ryos Mechanical gaming keyboard. I'm proabably not going to get this because my G.Skill is fine and dandy, but my OCD may take over at some point.

But this has got my interest a lot.

Roccat Leadr

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0711MP3SS/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I1HS5G4TG0DYSD&colid=1ZWIA7AZ6IZFL&psc=0

It basically looks like my Tyon but wirelss and a 12000Dpi sensor.

The wife wants a clicky keyboard and I don't because the noise will drive me fucking insane. We were thinking of the OW branded items from Razer to match the headsets we have but I believe that Chroma has clicky switches.

It appears I may be looking for Black or Brown switches? I cannot accurately determine if the Red is silent but I believe it makes noise and the Pink would be what I wanted.

The mouse is a version of one that a few of the streamers we watch use and it appears to be less complicated than the one you linked.

Try them out first. Chroma just means they are RGB.

A lot of the clacking comes from keycaps bottoming out and you can solve that with keycap o rings.

The whole what keys to choose is another abyss. It's all about actuation distance and pressure as much as it is about a click.

The Amazon listing says they are Greens.

Watching this seems like I would want Orange if I go Razer. It appears I need to find a Linear vs. Tactile board to try out.

Yeah, when I say brown, I mean Cherry MX switches. These are kinda the standard that most follow.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_(keyboards)

Razer made their own switches.

This is old but useful.

And a fairly decent Tom Guide explaining Cherry and the others.

Tzu, the keyboard I mentioned that I use is this one:

http://www.ebay.com/bhp/steelseries-merc-stealth

I absolutely LOVE this thing, and as you can see in that link, the prices are all over the place, because they don't make them anymore. In fact, I need to go ahead and buy a second one in case the one I have (which I've had for years now) ever craps out.

It's PERFECT for first-person gaming, and fully customizable.

Battlestation coming along nicely. Thanks to the extreme generosity of Jonathan Parker I am getting closer to quitting my job and becoming a full time Twitch personality. If only I could speed along my K+M skills.

omg you couldn’t have cleaned up the stairs before you took the pic? lol

Now we just need a clip of Tzu sitting at that gaming rig, pointing forward like Picard and saying "Engage"

I'm not allowed to sit there. Perl has it on lock down. She's gonna sign to a S3 OWL team.

Or, how is he going to get any time in getting his Destiny 2 characters raid ready with Pearl complaining that she's not moving up the Overwatch ranks fast enough? :)

I was going to mock you for the chair, until I saw the Overwatch toys and realized we have the exact same keyboard...

Seriously how much effort is it to drop something into a hamper instead of on the ground?  Men amirite?

If you have that same keyboard, that explains a lot considering the amount of bitching Perl does about it.

I praying to the PCMR gods that the PC is not on the carpeted floor?

Actually I replaced it when the W key got stuck.  It came with my IBuyPower PC build from a few years back.  I dunno, I didn't mind it.  Tough angle on her wrist or something?

It has really tall feet on it? All the air seems to be going out the top and back?

The problem with putting it on the bottom shelf was the mic/headset and USB inputs on the top as well as the power button are unusable because of how tall the case is.

I'll fix it....

Keys are kinda shit. The Backspace key sticks something fierce, almost unusuable. She claims the entire thing is unusable.

I'll be hesitant to use IBuyPower again for several reasons.

Pearl wants those Cherry MX browns for those leet 360 no scopes.

Besides the probably obvious fact that I own one now, care to share others?

The RAM I ordered didn't play nice with the board and crashed my rig constantly despite the fact that they assembled and tested the thing themselves before shipping it to me.  Then customer service was such a miserable nightmare I just said fuck it and bought 200 bucks of RAM here in town and sold the IBuyPower sticks on Craigslist.

Thread Starter

Genuine question: How do you troubleshoot that it is the RAM causing the crashes? Or really, how do you normally isolate what is beginning to cause problems so you can fix them?

Additionally what is the average lifespan of components? Does it fallow a failure cycle or a game spec cycle?

I can't remember all the details, but deep diving google lead me to plenty of DIY programs and systems you use to test the sticks.  Not sure about the life span either.  I can say that my desktop before this lasted nearly a decade without the need to replace just about anything, aside from upgrades.

You nubs. The whole point of being in the PCMR is that parts never get old enough to fail. You should already be planning upgrades. You should have been planning upgrades while awaiting delivery.

Serious talk. There are only a few things that will kill your PC dead. Power and heat being the most common. Make sure you have the best PSU you can afford in there. Not only are you getting quality power, they generate less heat. A decent surge protector or UPS is also a nice idea. Clean stable power will help everything tick along nicely well into old age. Now to heat. Keep an eye on your temps (I use CPUID) and clean out the inners of the case often. Especially, if you're on the floor. Mine is on the floor, but I have hardwood floors. My case is different also, so that the back of a normal case is the top of my case. (Silverstone Raven). I also leave the side off my case as I don't care about noise and it stops the things trying to suck up every insect known to man. Plus, I blow it out once a week. I use the below.

If your case has filters, make sure to give them a clean as well.

Like everything electronics, if you get past a few months you should be good.

^ Good advice.

YES!  Open up and dust out your PC every six months at least!  Important safety tip,  thank you Egon.

Just found a dead pixel on my monitor which I purchased 1/18/18.

hojkokfijt0ujov9lobq.gif
Try to get it replaced. Good luck though, even high end monitors have an acceptable limit on dead or stuck pixels. It's all about that placement.

If you think it might be stuck not dead, there are some things on the internet that might "shake" it loose. Even if it's dead there are things out there to wake it up. If it's just one or 2 it's worth the time.

Bought the four year plan from Best Buy. Stopped in tonight to look at keyboards. They said since I have that I can just bring it in and trade it for a new one.

*EDIT* I mean just look at this. CHUD is RUINED for me.

Because of an issue when I ordered our chair for the PC, I ended up with a $35 gift card. After looking at keyboards this evening we decided to order the Corsair STRAFE from Office Depot. It was listed at Best Buy for $69 and $139 at Office Depot. The latter price matched it in my Cart and with free shipping I only paid $39. It should be much better than the stock board that came with the PC but should also hold Perl over until we feel like spending big bucks if necessary. I don't see a real reason we need a $200 RGB keyboard but who knows....

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

You're in the PCMR now, there is no reason for a $200 RGB keyboard, other than it exists and therefor you need it.

You need to be careful mate, being the PCMR is the similar to being in Equilibrium. Any more comments like the above and you'll get a RGB over expensive Grammaton Cleric come and Gun-Fu you for being a common sense offender.

Windows Update 1709 is pure trash. I would roll it back if you have the option.

In the PCMR, it is truly the PC that is the master, and not the user.

Aaaayyy shit is a hassle. I'll post a picture of my setup later so ya'll can see what 25+ years of fucking with computers ends up doing to a man.

Well I know the Overwatch Razer Chroma Black Widow has pre-sets that change the color scheme of the keyboard depending on which hero you are currently playing.

But for god's sake, don't tell Perlman that.
