You've had years now to trade up...

A PS4 might be in the cards when God of War comes out, I can last till then. Gotta make good use of this year of XBL I got on CDKeys anyways.

Which Xbox do you have? Maybe my son would want to trade his Call of Duty PS4 so that he and I can play PUBG.

Xbox One S 500GB, got it a year ago. I've been enjoying the exclusives on it a lot. Gonna be putting many hours into Forza 7 when that hits next month.

Word is that if you have a physical copy of the game you can begin playing around the world today because the servers are on in the future.

New Zealand that is.

*EDIT* Confirmed.  Live game is being streamed on Twitch.  Be aware if you want to go into the game fresh.

I ain't got no zealands or a disc copy. At least my preload is all set. 13 hours to go.

It has nice skyboxes, apparently. Neato.

CUUUUUUUUURSE YOOOOOOOOOOOU CONSOLE PLAYERS!!!

I wanna play too...and technically I COULD...but I'd rather play on PC. Just prefer FPS's on there with a Mouse and Keyboard.

So me, Sax and Dalyn will join you all in...two months time...

Fuck.

I got in late on D1 and I generally suck at FPS, but I'm pretty excited about this - I've been watching a crapload of Youtube stuff over the long weekend and it looks really good. I expect this thread to be full of the best tips and tricks on the 'net, bigly.

I'm so lukewarm on this game right now.  Are there going to be raids available from the start or would we have to wait for those?

Don't remember the date, but the first raid will be available more or less at launch opening about a week (maybe 2?) from tomorrow - basically, should be time to level and do a bit of power grind at which point the raid should be ready. No long delay

I think I might go Nightstalker. It sounds completely different from the endless groundpounding I did in D1.

I only tried the shield thrower guy in D2 beta, wasn't into it.
Campaign is legit so far. Music is great, and they are getting a lot out of the engine with impressive lighting and art design.

I'll try out Crucible as soon as I get a gun that's not a lame autorifle. Just got past the part where you (spoiler) hit level 2.

Got kicked from the server for a minute, now I'm back on. Hopefully things don't get Diablo 3 launch-esque late in the day.

Dave, I'd like your input here.

I realize it has been a long time since I played D1 but I do not recall the characters moving so damned sluggishly. Not talking about certain areas of the story, talking about outside of those restrictions, but my Titan felt like he was trudging in mud constantly. I can't imagine it's an Overwatch thing because the movement there isn't always the quickest for the majority of characters. But my character definitely felt weighted down.

Also, the AI has this crazy tendency to surround the shit out of you and I wonder your thoughts on that.  It felt crushing and suffocating fighting many enemies and weirdly I think they are overusing the cloaking mechanic of the Fallen.  Also, the new environments make it a bit of a jumbled mess trying to locate enemies to shoot.

Trying my best to not go full on hate for this thing but wanted to get your early take up to the point of

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
meeting ye jolly old sniper in the bell tower and before going on the mission that follows.

Also, PC people, yea or nay on dropping all the hints and whatnot here before October or would y'all prefer we spoiler tag much of the discussion until then?

Tzu, best I can tell you is to keep at it for a bit. Not sure how far you've progressed, but I do hear what you're saying about movement feeling on the sluggish side. I haven't played much of Destiny 1 lately (since there really wasn't anything left for me to do and since the group wasn't getting together on a regular basis, I was fine giving Destiny a break knowing that Destiny 2 was coming up fairly soon).

I have, however, played a metric crap-ton of Warframe as of late (over 400 hours - ack!) and in that game all restrictions on movement are gone - not sure if you watched SkillUp's review on YouTube for Warframe in 2017, but if you haven't it's wordy - but worth it. In that he talks about how movement is power in games (and he's right about that). Warframe takes those chains and completely breaks them. Destiny does not - this is not to say it is a flaw with Destiny, they are very different games with different approaches. My point being is that after not playing much of Destiny 1 for a bit and playing quite a bit of Warframe - I felt the same way you did going into both the beta of Destiny 2 and the full release - "why the hell can't I move faster" (but at least I'm starting to stop wasting grenades trying to bullet-jump in Destiny so there's that). I'm now about 4ish hours into Destiny 2 and the movement feels exactly like I remembered it being in Destiny 1, and I really don't continue to feel weighted down by it.

As far as the enemies in the game flanking you and you generally feeling like you're being mob-rushed Serious Sam style? Yeah, there's a bit of that - but also keep in mind that not only have you taken quite the break from Destiny, it's been far longer still since you've played Destiny with a fresh character - that is simply a matter of your relative lack of power at this point. Get a few abilities under your belt and some better gear (which the gear progression already feels much faster than in D1), and you'll be fine.

Again, stick with it - shouldn't take you all that long before you're right back into it

Now, if I could just get my damn sparrow back - we'd be talking :)

If it's not too much trouble spoiler tags would be greatly appreciated WRT the plot. I am weak and probably won't be able to stay out of this thread. Please and thank you.

And FWIW, when I played the Beta I noticed the Titan was slower than the others. Warlock and Hunter were much faster moving. Believe that might be tied to your Mobility rating.

Reading about the 'Returning Veterans' montage makes me want to pick this up. I guess, in the end, we lost all our gear. But we still have our memories!

I picked up the original Destiny this week, beat the campaign, and have made it about halfway through The Taken King.  Destiny 2's movement feels pretty identical to me.

There's a story this time!  And I'm kinda into it!

Welp. Just decided to blind buy Destiny 2 (though I probably won't be able to play it until thursday or even friday since the internet is so darn slow on base), so I'm looking to play with anyone who has the game.

Still enjoying the campaign, up to level 7. Waiting until I get the Sparrow to wander around EDZ too much.

Movement seems back to what I thought it should be. Guess it was just rust being knocked off.

I'm wondering where this amazing story is so far. Not really seeing why it is so much better than before.

I will give it this though, there is nothing like a Scout rifle. If Bungie can do one thing they can make it feel good to shoot aliens in the face.

I'll grant you this right up until the writing delivers a line like, "We're not so different, you and I."

It's no "I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain." but it is hackneyed as shit so far.

Trying to open up those damn Strikes, but I got my ass kicked by the boss on Io with the infinite minions. I'm at the right power level, guess I just suuuuck. Time to Adventure and gear up instead I guess.

First 2 Competetive matches were an utter travesty. 0 rounds won by my teams.

In a rare showing of self control I'm not getting destiny 2 just yet.  I really REALLY like the first one, but still haven't finished all the Taken King stuff etc.  When I play/played Destiny I was usually alone and more than happy just to go do some patrols so I'll spend lots of time not actually doing much, but that works for me.

Anyway...  I've heard the opening of Destiny 2 is neat with the images of things you've previously accomplished and who you did it with and on several gaming podcast I've heard people say how cool this is.  I can't wait to see all the stuff I did... alone....

At least the game doesn't say "Hey Nanoblech!  Remember that Raid, or ahem... THOSE RAIDS... you didn't do?  And all that other content you bought but didn't get to and even if you did get to it you'd be here on this shiny new Destiny 2 screen all alone?  Yeah.  Remember that?"

SAD!

All kidding aside, I really can't wait to get my hands on this one.  Just trying to be realistic about my time and when I'll be able to really give it the time I want to.

Most anyone who followed the Destiny thread here and played any of D1 with me knows I couldn't have been a bigger champion of Destiny for the first year or so of its existence.  You will also know that after The Taken King I turned very hard on the game and Bungie. This was a combination of a flaming burnout on the "second job" Destiny had become and the utterly fucking stupid decision making and "mystery box" treatment of its player base by Bungie. I am doing my best to give D2 a fair shake. The below is part of a rolling "review" after some 5-6 hours with my Titan who is now Level 11 and 119 Power. I don't believe any of this is spoilery for the PC folks as I am not delving into story beats but more the gameplay, mechanics and design. I apologize if something is more than you'd like to know, PC brethren. If there is, let me know and if I follow up with more thoughts as I play I will leave items like that out.

Played another hour and a half this AM. The EDZ has this weird bluish-purple hue and they colored all the Fallen the exact same color saturation so they are quite difficult to make out against the quite busy design scheme. The game is beautiful, which D1 was too, but they have done some weird design decisions with the lighting early on in the game and there just appears to be this washed out brightness to everything.

I will say that moving on to Titan from the EDZ has made the game begin to grow on me.  The level design here is aces and I don't expect to know these destinations like the back of my hand as in D1. I think it may be combination of more of an open world level design but also I think they have cheated some by not making many of the areas very distinct so that they all blend in and you get this feeling like you've been to this place but also you can't recall exactly if you have. That being said the early Story Mission/Adventures I did here this morning impressed the living hell out me for their design, score and feeling of space dread that was missing from even D1.

The Hive, especially Thralls, are actually a bit more frightening.  I haven't been this scared of a Thrall rush since the first few times in the Crota Raid. I like the polish they have done on some of the designs but I dislike the fact that when Thrall die they briefly obscure the ones behind them. This does contribute to the "horror" of a fight against the Hive and it is a minor personal annoyance. Effective in making the gun battle feel different so I can learn to work around it. The Fallen Vandals that now skitter around on all fours are a bit unnerving at first as well.

The AI is improved in some areas but seems much more dumb in one or two instances here and there. I did like the fact during an Adventure, I believe, that the Fallen I needed to find actually appeared to be running from me.

The first real RPG I think I played was Elder Scrolls Online a year or so ago. I fell in love with the fact that as I was doing story missions that took me to the climax of the main idea I had all these little sidebars that I could work towards leveling up. I am a completionist so while I think most people on my friends list have finished the main story I keep checking off the Adventures when they pop up instead of moving on to the next main story objective. This quirk might be causing me the "problem " I am having where I don't feel like I am in danger during any mission or fight up to now. I think I might be leveling up too fast and going into these main stories way over-prepared.  This is good and bad I suppose. I'd like there to be more difficulty but I guess that will come with Strikes, Nightfalls and Heroic Story missions. The way they have structured all this does seem to be working but I think it may be a less than stellar effort in the long run but who knows.

With respect to game play and mechanics. as I said a post or so ago about the Scout Rifle and shooting aliens in the face, this is just getting better and better as the game progresses. Learning the new AI, hitting those yellow crit shots, learning the new weapons... it's all growing on me as I said.

I have railed about how Bungie wouldn't deliver with Destiny 2 because I feel they are incapable of righting the ship they capsized, IMNSHO, with Destiny. I am not ready to say they delivered just yet but so far they are beginning to change my mind.  Destiny always excelled as a group activity and the highs and lows of beating a Nightfall or Raid with your friends and getting that elusive drop were always where the game shined beyond all the warts. I am purposefully doing the entire experience up until End game with my Titan alone so that I don't infect the friends I made with the negativity I have shown for the end of D1. Hopefully if the game turns out to be what everyone always wanted the original to be, or close enough, I can do the next two characters with friends and enjoy the social aspect once more.

If somebody tells me that they brought the Fatebringer back, I might play.  Who am I kidding, its Destiny, of course they're bringing it back!  Destiny is contractually obligated to offer no more than 4 types of weapons.  I just hope I'm lucky and get the best new rocket launcher...the MALLETHORN.

I only played a bit last night and was telling Old Man Luft that It feels more satisfying getting head shots with the scout rifle.  Maybe it's that I haven't played in such a long time, but I actually had a good time last night. Luft and I even did a few "Adventures"  I liked it and definitely will play some more tonight.  I got an Exotic Boot Engram at Level 7 LOL.  They make me jump higher which we all know how well I do with jumps LOL.  Not the same without Tzu Commentary though.  I had zero expectations coming into playing and just wanted to hang out with some old friends and shoot things in the face.

It's gonna be another hour or two before my Nightstalker subclass unlocks and I can finally ditch these worthless throwing knives.

I have four main "dumb" settings I switch between; Dynamic, Normal, Movie and Standard. Dynamic I believe is for sports mostly but I play all my vidya games on that setting for the brightness and color pop. Standard is the energy saver version of Normal. I would have to get into the deeper menus to check the cool/warm issue. I'll have to cycle down to Normal and see what the EDZ looks like.

Thank god I do.  Otherwise I fear I would be back into the throes of addiction similar to D1 at this point.  After the improvement in the missions this morning I felt like calling in sick tomorrow so I could just get on with the game and figure out if it has promise or not.

Dynamic is going to throw your color balance and contrast out of wack.  It would explain why enemies blend into the environment - it's not an issue I had to deal with in the EDZ.

Switched to Normal with Standard warmth. Ammo boxes are actually distinguishable now. Fallen looks slightly better but I will go look at areas I was familiar with instead of the new area I was.

Temp options are Standard, Warm 1 and Warm 2. Not sure how yellow the starting screen should be.
The tricky thing about warmth is that it takes a few days to really adjust. The title screen is going to jump out as particularly yellow if you just switched from something cooler. It's different on every tv, too. Normal or warm1 are probably good.

The game itself uses heavy saturation and tinting in different area (like EDZ), which is why it's probably better to start from a neutral baseline with the TV.

I remember I was going crazy trying to figure out the best settings for Forza Horizon 3, until I realized daytime light is blue tinted in the game, which makes your red car temporarily pinkish.

It probably depends on how popular your model is (mine is an LG C6, so there's all kinds of info online), but you can Google your TV and see if other people have calibrated the same model.  If they have, you can just copy their settings.

Played a couple of hours of Destiny 2--I like it. I mean, it's basically more Destiny. I didn't get far into the first game, so alot of the things that really pissed people off about Destiny 1 didn't really affect me.

Haha, I can't hit the broad side of a barn with this Nightstalker arrow thing. I'll try to stick with it, though. I sorta get the gliding over the battle laying down tethers aspect. Remapped super to RB so I can at least aim while I multishot.

I've got 10 mobility and 1 recovery right now, so the smoke bomb invisibility is a game changer for survivability.

So a couple of questions I'll spoil text to avoid hurt feelings:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
1) After you regain your light are you automatically placed in a sub-class? I started with a warlock using nova bomb but when I was re-powered I was suddenly using the dawnblade.  I can't find a way to switch out of it (but I'm only level 8 at the moment).
2) I keep giving Devrim those EDZ coins for rewards/reputation but I don't seem to be getting anything? Does that kick in at level 20? Should I be saving them for later or just turning them in as I find them?

Thanks for the help!

Question 1:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Losing your Light in the opening mission means you lose the previous D1 sub classes and when you get to the shard you are awarded the NEW sub class for that character.

Addendum to the answer above that does offer some spoilery material for the game going ahead so click at your risk.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
While doing Public Events marks/bonds/etc will drop that ask you to charge them up and then send you on lore missions to regain older subclasses. I am not sure at this point if we will get all four back or just a total of two but I suspect there may be more than that looking at the UI design of the character page.

Question 2:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Give all the coins/materials to their respective faction leader. The XP will max out and give you a Legendary engram that you cannot claim until Level 20.

PVP tip:

Weapons with burns do more damage to guardians in Crucible who are using their supers. Thus, Energy weapons are preferable to Kinetic to stop a rampaging guardian. The burn of the gun DOES NOT have to match the burn of the super being used.

I don't recall this being a D1 mechanic.

Also, Ejoiner, a clarification for the addendum above from a fellow CHUD player.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
He received the Solar Hammer subclass quest from a Public Event after finishing the Striker quest today.

Public Event or HEROIC Public Event?

Gameplay mechanic that can help get better gear. Link spoiler texted because while not impacting the story it might be something PC folks want to find out then look for later instead of knowing how right off the bat.
