That's odd. I thought you were not meant to be able to get it until after the main story had finished.

Yeah, I thought that was the common punishment.  Get your lazy ass in gear and finish the campaign or you walk your happy ass everywhere.

Oh wait. Jacob probably means he got them out of the Bright Engrams and they've been sitting in his inventory, not that he's been driving around on them during the campaign.

So what do you guys recommend I do, start right in on the new campaign or do more adventures and patrols or what? I need more shards to spend at Xur, I think I have a grand total of 11. I also have no idea what "bright dust" is for, I have several hundred of that stuff too.

Nope, been driving since the day I got them. I remember the pop-up about hitting tab and then "e" to summon the bike. My first one was a speed of 150, then I got several at 160. Maybe you unlock them at level 20?

I only have 60 bright dust.  You can spend it at the Eververse.  I have no idea how to get it, though.  but you should just go around and do adventures and Public Events.  PEs are going on constantly, don't take too long, and sometimes you get some good rewards.

Yeah, I do PEs all the time. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some fast track to power.

So has anyone looked up how to get through this Leviathan yet?

In the same boat as Jacob. I got my first Sparrow doing story missions on Nessus from a Bright Engram drop. You do need to be level 20, but the campaign doesn't need to be completed.

For the sparrows - works well when leveling up alt characters as well - just pass an extra one into your vault and when you level up your 2nd or 3rd character, you can pull it out as soon as you hit the farm and use it almost from the beginning

Bright dust can be earned in game by dismantling extra ships / sparrows / armor / ghosts obtained via bright engrams, that can then be used to purchase whatever she has on offer for the week (stock rotates at reset).

You'll just want to complete the Milestones that appear on your map. The ones which reward "Powerful Gear" are the ones to aim for, as they'll give you gear (often Exotics) usually quite a bit higher than your current gear. The Milestones change every Tuesday but one of them will currently be to complete the new Expansion campaign. It's therefore up to you if you want to do that, or hit one of the others first (I always do the Milestone for the Public Events first, personally, as it's fun and quick). You're going to be earning a ton of Legendaries no matter what you do, so don't worry too much about that.

Jacob, you get legendary shards by dismantling legendaries you're not using by the Gunsmith (Banshee-44). Also, what Saxon said.

Finished the Osiris campaign today. Final boss fight was kind of "eh" but the rest was a lot of fun. Gonna tackle the Adventures tomorrow.

Also, bitchin'

Heck yeah!  Still not understanding why everyone is so salty about the game.  You step into the Destiny subreddit?  Yikes!  Once again, if this were a game with a monthly subscription fee, I would understand.  If this were a game where you had to pay to win, I would understand.  As it is, you pay normal video game price and get 60 bucks worth of content.  You can pay for Silver, but for what?  A new emote?  A shader?  Who gives a shit.  As for everyone complaining about lack of communication from the developers, this isn't a No Man's Sky bait and switch situation, where what they showed at a show is drastically different than the finished product, missing almost every feature promised.  You're pretty much getting the Destiny they said you were getting.  If you played many hours of it, wrung out every feature, item, whatever, and are bored with it now because it's repetitive, then just do what you do with any other game you finish or get bored with.  Put it aside and move on to the next game.  This isn't me being salty at you, Tzu.  This is just me being genuinely confused to the reactions I've been seeing online towards the game.

I was mostly making a joke, Dalyn. "People still play this game?" is the "First" of IGN comments on Destiny articles.

The salt comes from the three years that console players have had to deal with Bungie and their two steps forward, one step back development cycle + the fact they took a hardcore grind game and made it super casual + the fact they have had three years to use all the feedback they got from D1 and go forward.

But they appear to have completely thrown everything they learned from D1 out the window and started from scratch whilst not even paying lip service to their 1% grinders and it absolutely baffling.

My issue has arisen from the fact they took away 15 chances at loot drops from me without even a warning. Had they said in the streams or blogs leading up to the DLC, "hey, one of our patch notes is we are reverting back to where we take your keys away so use them up!" I wouldn't be miffed. But to take them away at reset THEN issue a patch note after the fact stating they would be taking them away is bogus.

Additionally the fact that I woke up this morning and KingGothalion from Twitch, who made his name on D1, was playing Fortnite squads. Third day after a DLC drop and he's playing the newest, hottest game and not that DLC? Doesn't auger for the DLC experience being a good one.

I am not even sure if my update finished DLing and installing.

You're one of those folks coming into Destiny with D2 on PC aren't you.... :)

The problem people have is what has come before. From the start and through much of its 3-year lifespan, Destiny 1 could be played casually but could also be played as a 'hobby game' It was a game, that I played almost exclusively for a good part of that time. Sure, there were content lapses especially between expansions - but for the most part - there was always something to chase. By the end (last time I looked) - I had logged over 2000 hours into Destiny

My problem with Destiny 2 is that in very short order (by comparison at least) - I simply ran out of carrots - the game was fun - but there simply wasn't any more progression to be had - I had pretty much all of the exotics (quickly) - had all the weapons that I wanted (more on that in a bit) - the raid gear isn't best in slot by a long shot (possible exception to the rocket launcher and sword from the raid) - and instead, all I'm holding onto are tokens that nobody wanted. Not only that - but the weekly challenges took you the better part of the week to finish in Destiny 1 (esp if you were doing so on all three characters) - in D2 - reset started Tuesday and by Friday I wasn't quite sure what else to do.

For casual players - this isn't a big deal as there is a good deal of great content to be had. However, for those who were hoping for Destiny 2 to be a continuation of a daily / weekly hobby type game - it isn't there.

In no particular order - here's what I consider Destiny's biggest faults at this stage -

  • No random rolls on weapons means chasing for that perfect roll is now out - and instead, you just need to find a copy and you're done.
  • Iron Banner loot - changed to the token slot machine instead of being able to buy that banner's featured armor and weapons along with getting random drops from the full Iron Banner gear as end of mission rewards - no stupid tokens
  • Heroic strikes not being a thing - and now that they are - well, they really aren't - much of the point to heroic strikes were the modifiers that changed up how you had to approach a strike playlist - now it just seems to be a higher power level meaning it is simply a gear check. Also, no strike specific gear kinda sucks.
  • While I'm on the subject of strikes - having a timer on the Nightfall was simply a bad idea. I would have been okay with it as rotation mechanic - but to impose it on me every week is just silly. Not to mention, it has pretty much taught everybody to simply speed-run strikes instead of being able to enjoy and appreciate the mechanics involved.
  • The raid is not bad - but it is (IMHO) the weakest of the raids thus far in Destiny (which is still a high bar, no doubt) - but again the raid loot is underwhelming and going after chests in the underbelly of the raid for more tokens (noticing a trend yet?) can only be described as asinine
  • Exotics are simply far to easy to get - the drop rate on exotic engrams really needs to be toned down especially considering how many drop when completing weekly milestones (that take about an hour to do)
  • PvP - was never my focus in D1 - but it was there - my biggest gripe with PvP now is the move to 4v4 from 6v6. There's been all sorts of discussions on it but my biggest beef with it is that Bungie is now telling me that the team that raids together, can't spar together. While it doesn't impact me as much, the fact that private matches were also added to D1 after the community consistently hounding for them - weren't in at launch is another mis-fire.

Having said all that - I did buy the digital deluxe version of the game and coming back into the expansion, I'm enjoying it. The gun play has always been very strong in Destiny and that hasn't changed. What still concerns me is how long it will keep my attention.

See, that I do get.  You guys earned something, and it was taken away with no warning.  That's lame. Also blocking some vanilla content to people who don't get the DLC is lame.  And I did get the joke.  I didn't know it's IGN origins, but it did remind me of making the mistake earlier today of stepping in the subreddit.

I also understand all the issues you and davedbc have. (And davedbc, I did play D1 on PS3 and 4, but was a casual).  I think what skeeved me out about it all (I mean the subreddit) was the sense of entitlement everyone in there had.  The game isn't broken.  It runs like butter and shoots great on the PC.  It just doesn't have the same features that D1 did that they loved so much.  Okay.  But this constant whining and demanding communication from the developers like they owe them something...  The only thing they owe you is a game worth 60 bucks and more if you get the DLC.

Bungie is essentially the J.J. Abrams of game developers. They play this coy, vague mystery box bullshit game and did so for all of D1. The blog post they did the other day in lieu of the stream they were planning was a major departure from their normal communication.

You might even say they are Trumpian in their communication, "We have the best updates. The best. You're gonna love them. We have seen them and played them and they are gonna knock your socks off."

But nothing as concrete as what they did the other day. Nothing as open as Blizzard with Overwatch.

That kind of information hoarding is a bitch to have to deal with and after three years of not delivering but maybe half the time on these big promises people are worked over.

They do so much right with the game that it is mind-boggling they get so MUCH wrong.

D1 was a full time job. I played 5-7 nights a week from 9pm to 1,2,3AM sometimes for the better part of the first year of the game. The grind back then was real.

I still remember the night I got the most coveted Rocket Launcher in the game, the two guys I was playing the Nightfall with, the screaming I did dancing in my living room and the hate I got from them for getting it.

I watched a video recently about the longest running crew in Grand Theft Auto Online, and the head of the crew explained that they have both evening and morning gaming sessions together. It's kind of crazy. It's the only game that the head of the crew owns for his PS4 and he journeys across America handing out personalised (with their gamer tag) license players to dedicated members of his crew. He even throws a get-together for them every year. So crazy.

Anyway, back to Destiny 2.

This must be what all of the people who love Star Wars Battlefront II feel like. I see all of the problems that this game has, and I understand why a lot of people are frustrated with it right now, and I can recognise the mistakes being made by the developers.... but it's still a game I really enjoy playing. I've paid about the same as I would for two nights out on the town, and have gotten.... well, I don't know how many hours of gaming but it's probably a lot.

I do hope Bungie manages to turn things around and that people become happier with the game.

Look, y'all.  I like Destiny a bunch, but I have a full-time job and a girlfriend.  I can't play six hours a night 5-7 days a week.  It just isn't possible.  I'm perfectly comfortable with the game letting me be fully maxed at, like, 70 hours.

I just keep thinking about how much better I'd be at, say, chess, or guitar, if I'd invested 2000 hours into practicing either of those in the last few years.

Or Overwatch!

This.

Not to devalue the experiences of guys like Dave and Tzu but I'm REALLY glad the game doesn't require that kind of commitment. I mean, I'm loving D2 but it isn't the ONLY game I want to play, and I don't believe it should be. It's why I'm kind of shocked at people being max level on three different characters right now. FUCKING HOW? I've been playing since launch almost daily. And even I've only managed to get all 3 at 270+. And hitting the weekly milestones on all three is also proving difficult for me, timing wise. I guess this makes me a casual then?

Basically, I already have a job, one I like at that. And I don't need the games I play to feel like jobs too.

I guess that's the appeal for me too*. I usually play quite a bit over the weekend (and Saturday is my social gaming day) but I like the fact I can dip in for two hours on a Tuesday and complete my Public Events milestone, and do a few Crucible matches on a Tuesday and then some on a Wednesday to hit that particular milestone, and come back on Friday for Xur, and so forth. I do feel sorry for the hardcore players but, selfishly, I like the fact it appeals to me as a more casual player.

* Well, that and the loot. This game apparently hits my sweet spot of continually finding better loot to make myself stronger / prettier, with combat that I enjoy. I tend to find those two items, combined with a semi-decent storyline, has been the magic equation for the MMO's I've enjoyed.

And you just KNOW he'll be selling stuff I want, unlike last week when I was loaded with legendaries.

Woe is me.

Thread Starter

I don't know about Dave but for D2 it would take me appx 1-3 hours to complete all the milestones on a character. I could hit my Titan on reset day, one Wednesday, Raid Thursday and the other done before reset.

D1 had a much different grind mechanic and the various things you could do actually were worthwhile. Tuesday night was all three Nightfalls with different people, maybe one on Wednesday evening if it was Darts season for Malphazio. The rest of the week was Daily Bounties to level guns and armor. Oh, did we not mention that in D1 you had to pour XP into EVERYTHING? Stats were not unlocked on weapons OR armor when you got it. See those circles that you can hover over and read the stats of your weapon? We had to unlock those with a ton of XP. Public Events were part of bounty farming but gave no real loot or tokens. Strikes gave a ton of XP but also worthwhile loot instead of tokens. The NF actually gave you rewards instead of tokens.

And the Raids? They actually had guns and armor locked behind the Prestige Mode. You couldn't complete your entire set with Normal mode runs. You couldn't double dip with tokens. The RNG was brutal but the Raid was at least fun to do. We had one guy who didn't get the God Tier Handcannon from the 1st raid, Vault of Glass, until after the weapon was no longer god tier. But we ran that single checkpoint three times a week every single week for him because it was a fun encounter and by god, he deserved to have it. Once he got it he had to then level it to make it the god tier weapon we had all been using. This Raid has nothing to chase, no excitement for when you get that Rocket Launcher dave mentioned....because you got it in a clan engram from Hawthorne....there is no sense of accomplishment. We have clan members who I am sure may have full sets of Raid armor who have never set foot in the Raid. That was a poooooor decision.

That might help to clarify why Dave, I and others have so much time invested in D1, we had to earn gear then set about leveling it to unlock top tier perks to decide if we actually liked the weapon once it was fully capable. Guns and Armor did not drop ready to use for us. Plus, Exotics weren't laying around like so much sand on a beach. You had to hunt for them and play to earn them.

I was on a couple of hours last night.  Did a chunk of Osiris.  Hit lvl 25 and 300 light, so I'm ready for tomorrow.  I may be on again later tonight for a bit.  If you see me feel free to join up.

Finished up the Osiris campaign last night (just on my Warlock) - and started a couple of the adventures this morning before logging into work. Overall, I'm not disappointed by the expansion's campaign and the final battle at the end of it is actually quite fun. It is a little odd that once the campaign is done - it unlocks adventures one at a time (do this adventure, that unlocks the next adventure, etc.) but that could be a side-effect of Mercury being the size of a slightly larger PvP map :) Also ran an instance of the public event on Mercury and it is different - while there was a big enough group there and the heroic version was triggered, I have no idea how that happens as yet (I'm going into the expansion as blind as possible). Mostly I'm just curious to see how / when this forge thing unlocks and how that all plays out.

Having started the missions on a second character, the art direction for the expansion is quite good.  The first time in the Infinite Forest (with the Simulant Past and Simulant Future) is pretty great.  It gets repetitive later in the mission set.  But it always LOOKS great.  I need to get back to those adventures.

I'll be very interested in the new Raid Activities.  And fingers crossed for Xur today.  I haven't received any new Exotics, but I did get an Ornament for my Hunter's Echelon Rig.  I'll take it.

I have to say with all the gripes with this game, man, I just love the look and design.  There is a point in the Osiris campaign where you go into a Vex pyramid, and it blew me away.  I literally felt vertigo for a few seconds.

I was also drinking Crown, so that may have contributed a little.

I think I know the part you mean, Dalyn. I almost took a screenshot of it yesterday because it struck me as a really beautiful image... and then I started checking something in my inventory and forgot about it.

i've read that hand cannons are more popular on PC due to the mouse aiming. It's why the PC meta includes Better Devils whereas that weapon is supposedly nowhere near as popular on the consoles.

Nothing will ever be as awesome as The Last Word.

Finished the expansion today. The Infinite Forest is a really cool idea and looks great but, as First Class says above, it gets a bit repetitive when you're running through it on your third or fourth time. Really enjoyed the two main boss fights, particularly the final one which - thankfully - has well-placed checkpoints. I died near to the end of the fight and thought I'd have to start the whole thing over again (which would have driven me mad), so was glad to see that wasn't the case. Loved the gear choice at the end, which gave me an awesome new set of gauntlet armor (now I just have to wait for New Monarchy to return so that I can grab the appropriate shaders to match them to everything else I'm wearing).  It's a bit short but at least it comes with a set of Adventures (which I've not yet started).

I'm still waiting patiently for them to bring back the Sparrow Racing League.
