CASABLANCA Casting Draft: Sign-Up & Discussion - Page 7

He would have been a great Renault ten years ago, but’s he definitely bloated into a Ferrari.

Molina or Reno (or both)?

Really strong end to the third day. I'll have to look at my tally, but it's usually after day 3 when things get really interesting, with main pieces off the board.

Reno.

I have a theoretical question.  Who should I go with in a decision between 2 choices for a minor character like Carl?  Options: 1) the once pretty famous, but now gone a bit to seed, and possibly very "on the nose" choice - he remains fun, IMHO, by the way, or 2) one of the currently "in" crowd here at CHUD.  Always fun, not quite as gone to seed, but I suppose could be selected any moment now.

This is purely theoretical.  It could be any minor character.

[EDIT] P.S. - My thinking on Reno as well.  I really wanted him for Renault, then realized he was a better Ferrari now.

Always go with the less obvious choice.

Great run of Ugartes today. I still have a couple of options, but my list definitely took some hits.

I'm really digging Schoenaerts as Laszlo. And Denis Lavant as Ugarte is definitely inspired.

Thanks, Boone. Looks like Bailey swooped my Sam with Jamie Foxx...dammit.

Glad I got Rockwell for Ugarte. You want someone twitchy in that part and I think that Rockwell would have a lot of fun with it.
Happy on Dinklage for Ferrari as well. He’s a fun actor when in arrogant, suave mode.

I missed most of a solid drafting day today. But finally a Broadway actor made it into someone else's draft, huzzah!

FYI, there's a great, shining Ugarte just waiting to get drafted that I hope someone nabs. I'm kicking myself for not thinking of this dude.

Going through the list to post the chosen and I missed superlaser casting Giamatti as Ferrari. That's great.

Chosen is up

Yeah, Giamatti was very much my back up Ferrari. I’ll try to grab my first choice in the morning.
Everybody’s got a nice Ferrari.

It’s a driving factor in this draft.

Not sure if I'll be drafting on time tomorrow so feel free to skip me.

I'm still really stuck on a Renault. Someone charming, believably corrupt and honorable, who would have good chemistry with di Caprio. It's a pickle.

I'm almost down to casting the bear from The Revenant.

My dad died tonight/this morning so I will probably not be participating on Thursday.  Boone is covering for me.

Condolences, Judas.

This is awful, and I’m truly sorry.

Be well, Judas.

So sorry for your loss, Judas.

Judas has almost singlehandledly kept these boards, and, in particular, these drafts/knockouts, going. He's among the best of us.

Judas, you’re a genuinely great guy and I’m sorry to hear about your father. Best wishes to you and your family.

Sorry for your loss, Judas. My condolences.

Here’s looking at you, Judas. You’ve got my full condolences.

Our thoughts are with you, Judas.

My condolences and thoughts are with you Judas. As Boone says, he is one of the best of us.

So, I don't think I commented on it yesterday, but I was thinking about D'Onfrio for Ferrari, but after the Kingpin, I thought it was cast typing.

Also, I would watch Hunter's version. It is shaping up nicely.

Thank you! It means a ton, given the extremely offbeat nature. The driving factor (which is what, in the end, convinced me to join in at Pither’s request) was that I couldn’t just do a modern version of Casablanca, the same setting, the same characters. It’s playing with fire; it’s why my Star Wars draft was a Tarantino salute to post-apocalyptic cinema. It’s akin to rewriting history. So I used the movie as a jumping off for a remix.

I almost went with a bigger name with Ferrari, but the idea of Dice as a casino magnate in something set during his prime was irresistible. I could see chemistry with Gosling too; it’s also why I went with a younger, smoother Renault.

Honestly, of all the drafts I’ve done here, this is the first one that I feel like I’d want to actually develop past an idea.

Dice fits like a glove with your theme. Nicely done.

Dent must be in my head - I was running through Broadway performers who could play Sam that people here would know, and Odom was on that list.

I guess I shouldn't have...

<puts on sunglasses>

...waited for it.

Same here.  I almost picked him first today but backed off because I thought we might see a run on young actresses for Yvonne/Annina Brandel today and I had another strong idea for Sam come to me last night.

So dent, you're welcome.

Man, I’m sorry to hear that Judas. Keep strong.

I'm envisioning my near future remake as CASABLANCA by way of HARLEY DAVIDSON & THE MARLBORO MAN. Maybe directed by Steven Soderbergh.

Big Steve Soderbergh gonna be pulling double duty, it seems.

LOL. I'd been having trouble casting Sam because I had a lot of good actors for it, but I didn't have any singers until Odom occurred to me last night.

I was the exact opposite.  Odom was the first guy who came to me, and I was locked in on him until I had another guy come to me last night with more screen acting experience.  It came down to my first Yvonne (Lea Seydoux) already being gone but having both of my potential Sam's left when I picked.

I'm glad to see Melanie Laurent made it in somewhere. I was thinking of her for Ilsa early on, but realized that was off the table once I cast Waltz.

LOL. We must be on similar wavelengths this draft, I guess.

She was *this* close to being my Ilsa.
She was mine until now.

Sacha Baron Cohen is a damned good Ugarte pick.

Damn, sorry about that man.   You've got a great list going too.  Tom Waits would never have occurred to me but he was an inspired pick for Sam.

Don’t worry, I have a pretty good backup.

You did at that. Coltrane is a brilliant late steal for Ferrari as well.
He only occurred to me last night! I figured he wasn’t on many peoples lost because he hasn’t really been in anything as of late.
