It seems like just yesterday, but it was a full 20 years ago that the thong burst onto the underwear scene.
It'll never be the same.
To celebrate, Frederick's of Hollywood, which claims credit for taking thongs to the masses, is throwing a party.
The purveyor of slinky lingerie plans to give away 100,000 limited-edition commemorative thongs at its stores across the country. "We are in the business of empowering every woman to feel glamorous and desirable in every outfit," Linda LoRe, president and CEO of Frederick's of Hollywood, said in a statement.
In recent years, thong sales have sprinted past sales for "big panties," accounting for 90 percent of Frederick's underwear sales - some 75,000 pairs weekly. That adds up to annual sales of $25 million to $30 million for thongs that range in price from $5 to $14.
"Younger customers have adopted them as a mainstay," said Christine Ansari, vice president of merchandising for Frederick's of Hollywood. "They are popular with girls in their teens, and once they start wearing them, they stick with them."
The first thongs appeared thousands of years ago when they were used as modesty pieces for nude models. G-strings were the modern day precursors to the "scanty panties," which stylistically are "somewhere between the G-string and the panty," Ansari said.
