"Milk and Cheese" + a call for suggestions

I need to order a new copy of the Milk and Cheese TPB, since I've read my old copy to tatters, but I might as well buy one or two more graphic novels to get my handly lil' supersaver shipping. Plus, I need comics. Any suggestions? Is Evan Dorkin's "Dork: Who's Laughing Now?" good?

Couldn't find any SCUD: The Disposable Assasain TBPs, and Sam and Max: Surfing the Highways is out of print, and I don't have the money to order the complete Sandman or Bone runs yet, and I'm not in the mood for anything too dense or depressing...

Any more ideas? I've heard a lot of raves about Hellboy, but I have no idea where to start.

Oh, and if you don't like Milk and Cheese, don't bother responding to this, since I hate you passionately.

Doug TenNapel is good 'n' funny.

Creature Tech is pure genius. GEAR is also good, but is probably hard to find at this point, since it was printed by the company that did SCUD.

Interesting you bring that up as I AM a wedge of spite.

Regarding Hellboy, the launch book is Seeds of Destruction. After that, any order will do. Personally, I thought Seed of Destruction was ungood. I do like The Conqueror Worm, though.

As for other TPB's, I strongly recommend anything 100 Bullets. As my reading choices would be laughed at as pedestrian by the fancypants comic book readers around here, I'll end my recommendations at this point in time.

Evan Dorkin was a guest at a comic symposium at my local library a few weekends ago. Along with Sara Dyer, Christine Norrie and Marvel editor Andrew Lis, they went over some of the finer points of the business, breaking in and staying in.

He is one of the fucking funniest men I've ever met. And "Dork" is great.

Hmm...Hellboy: Seeds of Destruction is currently out-of-print, apparently. Any other good jumping-on point, or would I just be completely lost if I don't start from the beginning?

Creature Tech is already in my collection. Much love.

I've heard a lot about 100 Bullets, but I've never picked an issue up. Is it noir? Crime thriller? Mystery? Comedy?

PS - This doesn't fit in with your bulk-buy supersaver shipping plan, but GEAR and the SCUD books should still be available at <a href="http://www.scud.com" target="_blank">www.scud.com</a>

Show the Firemen some love!

Edit: I challenge anyone to not want to read a book with this cover:

Is Gear anything like Creature Tech?

And how good is SCUD? I've heard mixed things, but it looks like it would be right up my alley.

The Dork TPB is great, though it doesn't have any of the Eltingville strips. If you haven't read his "Hectic Planet," give that a shot as well.

This is balls. But if you really can't find it, The Chained Coffin is a very readable selection of Hellboy short strips that should give you an idea of whether you like the concept.

I also agree that anyone who doesn't dig Milk and Cheese would probably be better off in the cold, cold earth. I've been a fan of Dorkin ever since Deadline started running his stuff back in the day. Dork: Who's Laughing Now? is a bit hit and miss. For every classic strip, there's a bit that doesn't quite work. For a more chilled and maudlin Dorkin experience, the Hectic Planet books are bitter-sweet goodness.

Here is the blurb from Doug's site about Gear:

Four incompetent cats high-jack a Giant Killer Robot! The plans are made, the cats lay in wait, the Robot comes and everything goes el stinko. This book's got everything: Robots, harpoon guns, talking cats, gun shots to the head- the whole sha-bang!

Here's a bit of interior art:

I think it would be, too. It's got some of the funniest pop culture stuff I've ever read, and it's all about the surreality.

Found Seeds of Destruction on Ebay. Is that where everybody (anybody) would reccommend starting the series? A few of the Amazon blurbs say it's the weakest of the Hellboy collections.

Think I might have to order Gear and at least the first SCUD TPB. Wish I could get 'em off Amazon, but oh well. Thanks, Grey.

Scud rocks! I really hope you like it, it's my favorite comic series of all time. Love, love, love.

My Milk and Cheese zippo was my most prized possession for many years. Until I lost it at a frickin' Heatmiser concert.

"Chained Coffin" is actually the best Hellboy TPB by far. And it's fine as a starting point--it's not like Hellboy's plot is so complex you'll be lost if you don't read them in order.

I think you'd enjoy The Adventures of Barry Ween, Boy Genius.

Also, Seed of Destruction is the starting point, but I would think you could jump in anywhere and enjoy.

I've been out of this loop for longer than I care to be.
Here are some not so recently published picks. I don't know if or where they are still available-
Humor/Independent
From Slave Labor Graphics-
Johnny the Homocidal Maniac
Any Dork compilation. I don't know if you've discovered the joy of Evan's "Eltingville Club" stories. Comic gold. I guarantee you will love it. I'll eat my own feet if you don't. While they're still attached.
FYI- Evan is presently writing a Thing mini-series for Marvel. It's illustrated by Dean (Keyhole) Haspiel.
Fantagraphics-
Any Neat Stuff, Hate, or Eightball compilation, natch.
Also check out a comic called Big Mouth. Funny autobiographical stuff.

Enter the dark, cynical, and hilarious world of Ivan Brunetti with his comic "Schizo". It is full of bile, self-loathing, and profanity. Not for the faint of heart, but I highly reccommend it.

That's all I can remember now.
Jeez. I gotta get back to the comic shop someday...

Have you read any Johnny the Homicidal Maniac? Not as funny as Milk and Cheese, but darkly humorous as well.

ANYthing by Evan Dorkin. Funniest guy in the business.

edited for spelling

Hellboy: Chained Coffin and Fun with Milk and Cheese ordered, along with Gaiman's "Smoke and Mirrors" short story anthology. "Gear" and the SCUD books are on my to-buy list whenever more money rolls along.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. Appreciated.

If you just can't wait for GEAR and Scud... check out robotbastard.com. It's a quasi-Scud short by Rob Schrab (Scud creator), and some of the robot stuff was designed by Doug TenNapel.

Damn, that's a good suggestion. Everyone in this thread should go watch <a href="http://www.robotbastard.com" target="_blank">ROBOT BASTARD</a> if they haven't yet!

Bumping this thread because "The Chained Coffin" and Nick's travelogue have got me craving more big red demon huntin'.

What's the next Hellboy trade I should order?
