These are comics that I read religiously. If one you like is not on my list it doesn't mean I don't like it, I just only have so much money.

1. The Authority
2. Transmetropolitan
3. Sin City
4. Hellboy
5. Grendel

I can't do essentials, I can just share my faves-

Squee
The Maxx
Milk and Cheese

I came to comics late in my life, and had to give them up about 5 years ago when I became a father, and the money needed to be spent on other things - like diapers and formula (and if you haven't read a dirty diaper before, the heroics are amazing! And the costumes...none of that black leather crap!) -- but when I was reading comics (1985 - 1995) my favs were:

Batman
Sandman -- Gaiman!
Preacher -- Ennis!
Hellblazer -- especially Ennis' run
Morrison's Doom Patrol

My list is just a duplicate of chenzzo's.

That disturbs me.

Oh, and also:

Tom Strong
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Top 10
Hellblazer

If I weren't so poor there would be many, many more...

And, last but not least, the comic that ACTUALLY qualifies as literature...

Cerebus

I disturbed the grendmeister, what a day.

The rest of my list reads just like your with the exception of Hellblazer (which I probably should read)

For some reason I quit collecting Cerebus, but for the life of me I can't remember why, I think there was some kind of mix-up when I switched comic shops.

The SAME THING happened to me for awhile! And I never did put a finger on why it took me four months to notice!

I think it may have to do with Cerebus not being an action-oriented book, but rather, like I said before, literature.
