well, amid the minor (but well founded) clamor for the batman franchise to resurrect itself by a film version of frank miller's "dark knight returns", i'd like to ruminate on a movie version of the /other/ major paradigm-shifting comic book work of 1986... alan moore's "watchmen".
could "watchmen" make for a big screen story worth telling? could anyone pull it off?
i'd wager it's within the realm of possibility to create the visual imagery. special effects would be easily workable within the budget of warner bros. (who i would assume would fund the film). my major concern would be capturing the true heart of the story.
this story is a real genre-bender: along with the concept of superheroes, it features elements of pure horror stories, detective mysteries, adventures, and psychological thrillers, just to mention a few.
it'd be the flipside to the high concept behind "mystery men" (which wanted to showcase some superheroes as failures and second-stringers). "watchmen" portrays even the most succesful superheroes as (perhaps overly) flawed human beings driven by their own neuroses and hang-ups.
add to that the armageddon countdown theme (which, admittedly, would have been more appropriate for a movie released before the new millenium had arrived), and you have both characterisation and plot galore.
maybe it's too much for one movie, but i'd like to discuss the idea of translating this story into cinematic form. any thoughts?
/willko.
