watchmen - the movie

well, amid the minor (but well founded) clamor for the batman franchise to resurrect itself by a film version of frank miller's "dark knight returns", i'd like to ruminate on a movie version of the /other/ major paradigm-shifting comic book work of 1986... alan moore's "watchmen".

could "watchmen" make for a big screen story worth telling? could anyone pull it off?

i'd wager it's within the realm of possibility to create the visual imagery. special effects would be easily workable within the budget of warner bros. (who i would assume would fund the film). my major concern would be capturing the true heart of the story.

this story is a real genre-bender: along with the concept of superheroes, it features elements of pure horror stories, detective mysteries, adventures, and psychological thrillers, just to mention a few.

it'd be the flipside to the high concept behind "mystery men" (which wanted to showcase some superheroes as failures and second-stringers). "watchmen" portrays even the most succesful superheroes as (perhaps overly) flawed human beings driven by their own neuroses and hang-ups.

add to that the armageddon countdown theme (which, admittedly, would have been more appropriate for a movie released before the new millenium had arrived), and you have both characterisation and plot galore.

maybe it's too much for one movie, but i'd like to discuss the idea of translating this story into cinematic form. any thoughts?

I think it could be done, although it would be hard. I think David Caruso should play Rorshach, and Beau Bridges should play the Nite Owl. That would be cool!

well we all know she can portray an all blue villain. Boom, she's got the job.

I believe that at this point in time the option for 'Watchmen' to be turned into a film has expired, as has 'V For Vendetta'. I can see them being made, eventually, although not in the current Hollywood climate. Ten, maybe fifteen years from now when WE, all the former CHUDDERS who go on to great things, are the ones making films.
