just saw princess monoke...

it was pretty cool. interesting mythological/fantasy overtones. it's definitely nice to see a story with fantasy elements not directly drawing from tolkien/arthurian/european mythoi. the english translation drew some heavy talent, notably neil gaiman doing the screenplay translation's adaptation and the voice talent of claire danes, billy bob thornton and minnie driver. i'm surprised it got so little advertising/mass distribution but then again i guess animation gets the hard shaft unless it's got a disney sticker on the poster. definitely up there with the iron giant, akira and ghost in the shell for favorite long animated movies. i recommend checking it out on video if it's available (not really sure). the background animation is also spectacular.

here's hoping for better than the dinosaur dreck that disney's pumping out this summer... hmm. titan a.e., anyone?

Saw Mononoke a couple years back in Japanese, without subs-and it was still a great film.

Interestingly enough-it IS a disney film. Miramax is Disney. They bought the film from it's Japanese studio (Studio Ghibli) and released it here.

Titan A.E. looks lke poop. I'm a sucker for Don Bluth, but the melding of the CG and cel anmation makes the cel job look flat. Also, the CG seems to vary in quality between Phantom Menace to Last Starfighter for no reason. There's a shot in the trailer that shows a starship of some sort exploding-and it looks like little kernels of popcorn are growing on the side.

Still, Janeane Garofalo does a voice in it, and she IS a wonderful creature...

yep, saw Monoke in the theater with the wife and my best friend, me and him just sat there with our jaws dropped for almost the entire movie. It was amazing.

Titan A.E. DOES have that Last Starfighter look in a couple of trailer shots, but I wonder if that's going to be the finished product or not...

Like in the original X-Men trailer you could see the wires holding up the cop cars, whereas you cannot now.

i liked the undeveloped but hinted-at nature of the histories behind the various cultures in mononoke. such as the tribe that ashitaka leaves that was almost driven to extinction and forced into hiding in the far east of the land... the legend behind the forest god and the human princess who lives among them... how lady whatshername came to power with her lepers and riflewomen from the brothels.

great movie. i wish more people had seen it the first time round in theaters. it really doesn't do justice to see such art on small screen (can't wait for hdtv and widescreen dvd being ubiquitous).
