hey folks, check out
http://genesiscomics.com/SOTW/Archive/

it's an archive of different instances in which a comics artist has "swiped" or copied another artist's work without credit. you think harry knowles is detestable, check out some of these examples. the examples all are lined up with the earlier piece of artwork that the alleged "thief" swiped from.

Yeah, I followed that site for a couple of years, I used to anxiously await who they'd nab next. I was really bummed when they decided to stop putting new examples up (i'm sure there's plenty more out there). There's a big difference between 'reference' and 'outright theft'...

I used to check that site out evey day.

I too was bummed at it's closure.

Roger Cruz and Rob Liefled are total HACKS!

Thank you chenzzo!!! I've always thought that Rob Liefeld (and his crappy looking forheads) is a tool.

I was always amused by Liefeld's characters with impossibly broad shoulders and tiny heads and feet...

I think some people would be bummed when they found out how little originality there actually is out there in artists. Having been around the comic scene for a bit, i've seen quite a few instances of questionable talent. Even Alex Ross, who everyone seems to love and admittedly does nice work for what he does, is essentially just painting over photographs. He shoots photo reference for every character he paints (he has models that he actually dresses in full costume, complete with proper lighting) and then actually paints over the photo, which is how he gets his characters to look so precisely similar from panel to panel. Is this "original art"? I consider it to be, given the factors involved, but i could see where some people wouldn't think so...

A lot of artists, especially ones who do painted work, use photo and other reference. But using other people's work for reference is just lazy and lame...

Tim Bradstreet, an artist I have long admired, does the exact same thing. It's just not as noticeable due to the difference in styles.

check out his website at
www.timbradstreet.com.

to see what I mean.

It kinda disappointed me, but I realize that I still love the stuff, regardless of how he does it.

Good news for you, my friend. Guillermo Del Toro is trying to get Bradstreet to do conceptual designs for Blade 2. A fairly appropriate move, I think, and a damn good first step towards making it the hardass vampire flick Del Toro apparently wants to do.

And on a somewhat related note, I was watching Blade again the other night (went out and picked up the DVD--it rocks, BTW), and I noticed a little something thrown in at the very end of the little sped-up film montage where Blade is chasing Frost's pet cop. They show a vamp attacking a woman, and then he throws back his head and growls. Check it out if you have access to the flick. It looks like a Bradstreet come to life.

Bradstreet rules, love his style and his attention to detail. I met him at San Diego two years ago, and he's a big friendly bear of a guy.

A good bud of mine named John Mueller uses photo reference sometimes. I know this because he's talked me into posing for him on occasion. Check out some stuff on his site at http://www.jmueller.com/ and see if you can guess which ones are 'me'...

Not too bad. You'd be surprised what you can cover up with makeup

Yeah, I cover up my unsightly Nunziata with makeup, and at times, even get COMPLIMENTED on it!
