I only have the first six issues. I love them like little else.

My favorite character, although largely unexplored in the first story arc and a half has got to be the Midnighter. And, of course, the Shaman, or whatever the hell his name is, who is just about always killing his damn self trying magic tricks that he doesn't know how to do.

Cool stuff. Ellis is my favorite "new" writer of the last several years.

My favorite Ellis moment: Transmetropolitan, a single-page drawing of Spider Jerusalem and his assistant dressed in those fake sumo wrestler bitch-tits outfits, running at each other full-tilt while in the text box he describes lovingly why it is the only worthwhile and legitimate sport. It ends with the line "Sumo is the only thing I love that loves me back."

Perfect.

For more Midniter info and backstory, check out the continuing adventures of Authority in the book of the same name, and read the last three Stormwatch TPB's, in which he and Apollo were introduced, also check out the Secret History of the Authority.

Good stuff.

Hey gren, great line from the new Transmet:

"And don't try to order me around unless you want my bodyguard to defenestrate you. And you wouldn't want anything nasty to happen to your fenestrates, would you?"

Thanks to CHUD, I knew what he was talking about.

Resurrection.

It took far, far too long, but I just picked up the 2nd Authority tpb and read it straight through. KICK ASS. If you're writing a comic where your characters kill God, then pick up the next story arc without batting a damn eye, you are rocking the fuck out. This is the first of the Millar issues that I've read and wasn't disappointed a bit. The Americans.. WHoa! The spree of global carnage that accompanies the search and recovery of baby Jenny is one of the most satisfying stories I have ever read, in any format. WHo'd have thought Stan Lee would turn up?

Great book. To me, I think this is the next step in comics evolution. What the Marvel books were in the 1960's, this book is in the late 20th century, a logical progression of the form. Lee/Kirby owe their success to one thing(besides talent)-they asked the question "what if super heroes were more realistic?" And so we got heroes with problems, who argued with each other, who had feet of clay, as opposed to their blander counterparts over at DC, who often could only be distinguished by hair color.
After reading this, I knew I'd never be able to go back to a safe, status quo writer like Dan Jurgens or Kurt Busiek.

I just picked up a recent Authority, and it pissed the everloving shit out of me. You finally find out what happens to a certain Russian superhero (presumed dead), and it ain't good. I'll try to burn the memory of this issue from my mind.

Not to piss on the Authority, but it's only one take on superheroes. The stories were refreshing, surprising and well written, but I couldn't embrace it because it felt a little too sensationalist ("How can we go further over the top this issue?").

To Richard Werder: I actually prefer Busiek's stuff on Astro City to the Authority. His work on Untold Tales of Spider-Man was also phenomenal. I wouldn't liken Busiek to Dan Jurgens. That's kind of silly.

Really? I've always considered Busiek's work, with the exception of Marvels, to be amazingly bland. Stilted expository superhero dialogue, purple captions-he has a tendency to veer off into Claremont land. Same thing with Jurgens.
I did like his Untold Tales, though, maybe because his style is suited more to the Silver Age than anything else.
After reading the works of writers like Morrison, Moore, Gaiman, etc., going back to that Marvel 70's style of writing is like watching Homicide and then watching Starsky and Hutch. For me, anyway, it means I'll never be able to look at certain types of comics again.
