Well, now that we'll eventually have THREE versions of the classic trilogy (yes, he's adding even more to them during the production of EP2 and EP3) it kind of complicates things.

Why is Lucas so afraid to try something different? Can't he just leave Star Wars alone for a while instead of altering and padding it beyond recognition?
