What kind of DVD player do you have/recommend?

I currently have a DVD-ROM drive output to my TV, but I'm looking for a set-top DVD for the sound and video features, not to mention a remote. I'm looking at about $300-$500. What should I get?

Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic, or Mitsubishi. AVOID TOSHIBA!

You can get a really nice one for 400-450 bucks. I'd recommend you go to a specialty store (We have Access DVD and Laservideo Ent. here) and find the best model. Then price shop at Best Buy or Circuit City (just don't let them sell you one of the ones with DIVX mentioned on the box).

Rammed into any cars lately?

I know DIVX (and Circuit City) are only slightly less evil than Jan DeBont. I've haerd many good things about Toshiba, so that's good to know to avoid them. I've pretty much narrowed it down to Sony and Pioneer. Is it better to get one of the new multi-disc changers or are single-disc players better? (Less moving parts)

"haerd" -- (scottish slang) -- to run through with a halberd.

You mean you don't remember your run in with the car door during the taping of "A Foot In The Grave"?

I had to stop because we were all laughing so hard.

Go with a single disk job.

Okay, now I remember. Must have been amnesia caused by those "Bad Dates" Thanks for the help with the player. The message board is great.

Uh-oh, what's wrong with Toshiba?
The first to third gen models had some major hiccups on certain DVD's.
Argh. Sucks to be me.

I'll fight Toshiba!

Actually, Toshiba models 3109 and higher are very reliable (I have the 3109 myself and have never had a problem with a DVD.. save for the Nightmare Collection Encyclopedia, but MANY players had problems with that because the disc was poorly designed)

The main problem with Toshiba players were with the first releases of the 2006, 2009, 2106, 2109, and 3006 models. I know a few people (Micah included) who have the newer 2109s... and they seem to be good fighters.

Anyway, I love my Toshiba 3109. I've had it for a while and it's been a sexy little bitch. Besides, it has by far the best remote of any DVD player on the planet. It's so great, it summons lawn gnomes!

Nick is correct though, Pioneer will ALWAYS put of the best DVD players. It's a tradition they started way back with the beginning of laserdisc.

Ok, that makes me feel a little better.

I have a newer 2109, and it's hasn't given me any reason to bitchslap it yet.

I'll probably sell it to my family when they and the rest of the world realize that VHS sucks mutant penguin turds.

Sorry about that. The page wouldn't go through so I stopped and refreshed it twice. Next time I'll know better!
No problem... took care of the multiple posts.

Yeah, I know several people (including my dad, Micah, my friend John (actually 2 Johns), another co-worker and a paragraph) who have the latest 2109 and none of them have had any problems. If I were you I wouldnt worry about it much until you get a DVD that gives you problems. I have many DVDs and my Toshiba has never once hated me... except for the Nightmare Encyclopedia thing I mentioned.

Stay away from all other Toshiba players with numbers under 3109.

Carl's just trying to lure you in. He wants more people to have Toshibas and be trapped!

Don't do it!!!!

Kidding. Even my Panasonic hates a few discs.

Your all a bunch of rich pricks. "Oh, should I spend $400 on a new piece of junk?" Do you realize that there are people who need necessary items while you are being selfish? You make me and many others sick. Try doing somehting for charity once in your life and thinking of others.

And I suppose you're typing to us from somewhere on the astral plane, via that huge antenna you have shoved up your ass.

Truth is, you have nothing better to do than complain about a bunch of guys having a bit of fun. Lemme tell you something: I'm going to enjoy ripping into you, because, you don't HAVE to be here. You are a bratty asshole with nothing better to do than sit around and bitch. Why you do it, I don't know or care. I hope you sit at home all day long and cry because other kids won't let you play wiffle ball. I think you are a complete prick who enjoys being a complete prick because he doesn't know what else to be...other than a giant prick.

At least this guys taking heat away from John Rocker.
But.....I have a lot better things to do than give my portable DVD player to the needy. They couldnt afford DVDs anyway! Remember? Their poor. That was a joke.

Sorry, Sal, but I am typing this response on a laptop... which holds my 2nd DVD player so I can watch my fave films while on business trips.

Oh, and I ran over a homeless person while I was on the way to work

I did the same thing the other day. Only three times, but still embarrassing. One of the overlord will get rid of the multiples in time.

How much did you Hitachi cost? My parents have a Hitachi VCR, and it's really quirky with light tapes. No hiccups at all? I may have to try one out when it's time to upgrade...

I have a Panasonic DVD - L50. Thats the portable one. I love this thing and don't know what I did before it! I got it at a discounted price though with my work. But if you can afford it, get it. Plugs in real easily into any television with one wire. That even easier than the RCA player I have at my house!

Well, Athens Ga. is just a hop skip and jump away, but I don't think I can handle the commute to Greece.

I want to get a DVD-Rom, but I don't think it would work very well with my 486DX Laptop.
