man, i'm like the last cro-magnon among the neanderthals around here...

specifically: i don't own a dvd player! <boo! hiss!>

yeah, yeah, i know. here are my excuses:
1) i'm a poor college student.
2) i was waiting for the u.s. release of playstation 2
3) my fraternity house here at school has one

so. to sum up, i don't own a home dvd player. ...but i do own fight club on dvd.

anybody else not learned to use their opposable thumbs like me yet?

yeah, it's tough to kill 2 birds with one stone sometimes, shelby. at least we can console each other as the rest of these rotten bums watch their precious movies in dolby surround 5.1, widescreen.

<seething hatred>

p.s. if you're scared half to death twice you've still got 1/4 of your life left:
scared half to death once: 1/2 * 1 = 1/2 life
scared half to death again: 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/4 life.

now, don't let anything scare half your life away. that's subtraction scaring.

I only had the one in my PC until I got one for a wedding present. I too was waiting for the PS2.

Now if I could only get the rest of the speakers for my receiver...

That's funny, I got mine as a wedding present as well.

From My wife.

Gosh, she wasn't thinking, was she?

Does PS2 support Dolby Digital 5.1? i havent seen anything that says it does, but considering a DVD player with a decoder costs at least 200 balloons, i sorta doubt it will. That would be a major selling point for me (if i wasnt already going to buy one and didnt already have a dvd player). I used to just have a Dolby Surround 2.0 setup and never thought much of the sound, until i upgraded and realized what a HUGE difference it makes. Now a lot of DVDs i get, I'm almost more interested in the sound mastering than the image (which only on a few rare occasions have i seen completely botched). Getting a good 5.1 mix is essential for me now

If you dont know what i'm talking about, the difference between them is that 2.0 has two main channels, front and rear. 5.1 has a separate sound signal for each speaker (left and right both front and rear, center, and subwoofer). Watching something like the opening of Saving Private Ryan is absolutely unreal in 5.1, but sorta muffled in 2.0

dave, i looked around a little bit...

"Optical Digital Port:
This neat port is the same as the one found on consumer DVD players. PS2 owners can plug in a fiber optic cable that will send PCM (uncompressed CD), Dolby Digital AC3, or DTS (Digital Theater Systems) Digital Surround audio to an audio receiver equipped with a compatible port and decoder. The home version of DTS is a 5.1 multichannel digital audio format used in DVD movies (theater DTS can handle more channels). Modern high-end receivers have this optical port, and because the signal is digital, PS2 owners can be assured that they're getting the highest quality audio out of the system. "

this was found on cnet's psx2 faq.
http://www.gamecenter.com/Ps2/faq.html

from what it reads like, ps2 will not be the ideal dvd experience (the interface is apparently clunky), but will offer fine performance for a decent price. economical and diabolical. my paycheck has now been turned over to sonycorp.

Guess that makes it worth it then. Although i'll be buying it for the games...

yes, i guess the game controller is used as a remote, and the drivers are in the memory cards. i heard there was some problems with them in Japan when it first launched, but i imagine it'll be straightened out when they launch in Sept
