X-Men 1.5

Because I didn't want to have all the cover stuff preceding it...

Anyway, I'm just getting into the meat. The X2 preview is sexy. Ends with a brand new cut of the last trailer on there, with more Nightcrawler!

Cool stuff so far.

if I owned the first one...what reason is there for me to go out and buy this newer edition?

I haven't been keeping up on things, regarding this disc and the new supplements to be pumped about it, other than not liking the mentioned cover (as discussed in the prior thread).

Well feature-wise, there's a commentary, featurettes, etc.

No reviews? This puppy hit stores yesterday, and no real mention of it yet. Odd.

I did pick it up however (21.99 canadian, not too shabby at all) and I'm still trying to work my way through the big huge long documentary cut up into about 13 pieces. It's actually quite fasinating, and oftentimes quite funny.

Dvdfile did an interview with the dvd's producer, ( http://www.dvdfile.com/news/special_report/inside_the_disc/xmen/1.5/index.html ) and he reveals a lot of the corporate shenanigans that went on during the making of this dvd. Despite those shenanigans the dvd is pretty damned informative.
God bless Hugh Jackman and his complete and utter enthusiasm for the part.

Is the X2 trailer that is attached to "Daredevil" on this X-Men 1.5 disk? That trailer is a thing of beauty.

The supplements are fucking amazing, they will hold me off until the holy grail of dvd releases: Fear and Loathing Criterion.

I believe this just has the teaser trailer.

Not unless it's an easter egg. The trailer on the disc is a new version of the last one (which in turn was a recut version of the Comicon footage).

Katanga was telling me about this new X2 one earlier, and I'm going nuts for it. If I only I wasn't freaking ill, I could go see DD...

The X2 trailer is the same one from in front of Daredevil. Exactly. It follows the breif documentary on X2 that shows Bryan Singer taking a break and giving a tour of the set.

I'm loving this DVD so far... except for two things. Number one is the extremely stupid name "1.5". But, we've been over that before.

Number two would be the commentary. Now, Bryan Singer gives good commentaries. The Usual Suspects commentary is legend. IT's not him that's the problem... you see, good ol' Bryan doesn't like to do commentaries by himself. Nope. For Suspects, Chris McQuarrie was his company, and McQuarrie gives pretty damn good commentaries on his own. So, who's on the X-Men commentary with Bryan?

It's some other guy named Brian something (last name escapes me) who has nothing to do with the movie. I think Singer just grabed him going into the recording studio and asked him to join up. He's either a friend or a Fox company guy... anyway, he sucks. He adds nothing to the commentary and he has an annoying voice. Oh, and he makes lame jokes.

I stopped listening after about 30 minutes. Everything else is solid.

Well that's a shame. This is, or was, definitely on the soon-to-rent list. The movie's not good enough to buy twice, but I'm curious about the features. Especially the commentary.

Ok... did I get a dodgy disc? The X2 trailer on mine (which comes about nine minutes into the sneak preview) is exactly the same as the last one with like a scene or two different. No rollcall of any kind, and no Colossus.

I like the commentary tho. He takes a bit of time to warm up, but overall (and with the deleted scenes branched in), it's a good track.

Oh wait... I guess you're right. Nevermind what I said. I got confused. There are too many teasers floating around.... bah!

The commentary track is a bit strange, but this Brian Peck guy knows what he's talking about. He seems the be the one who's bringing up everything to Singer, even little factoids and trivia. It's kinda neat.
Apparently this Peck guy is a friend of Singer's and was in a few movies including x-men (he's the guy beside stan lee at the hot dog stand) and return of the living dead even. Sure his voice is annoying, but you get used to it after awhile.
And hey, this dvd came with a free movie ticket to either daredevil or x2! Thank god.. i dont actually want to have to pay to see daredevil.

I love the commentary track. I expected him to just rehash a bunch of shit that is already available in other forms. He dishes out a lot of interesting facts. My favorite being the identity of the truck driver. That was a surprise.

I'm working on a review of this for the site. Have patience.

This DVD set is such a waste of money and was just a way for Fox to capitalize on X-Men nuts.

Yes, you get a new commentary, but why couldn't they have pulled all this stuff together for the first release?

Yeah cause the fact that Bryan Singer wanted to do it had nothing to do with it, right?
Well, frankly other than some certain scenes and lines, X-Men was not all that great in my opinion.

X2 on the other hand, looks to blow all that away, as the trailer I saw in from of Daredevil was the best part of the night.
I never got the first X-Men DVD. Why? Because I heard a rumor of another DVD coming at the time. Just a rumor, but it made sense to me.

Who's laughing now, Fox?
It was stated in many publications prior the release of the original X-Men DVD that a special edition would come in the future. It was stated that there was not a definate time frame for the release but that one would come.
Well, I own BOTH, because even tho' I knew there was going to be another edition, I just HAD to have the original as soon at it came out. I AM kind of bummed that the additional scenes and new music weren't included, but I can accept these omissions since they, instead, thought the money and time would be better spent on the sequel. That's just fine, as far as I'm concerned. And the new DTS track is AMAZING! All the special features are great, but that track ALONE is worth buying the disc again (those of you who haven't experienced the sheer wonderment of DTS... I pity you...).

I DO have some complaints about how the DVD was produced, however - the fact that not all of the materials were presented in anamorphic is pretty annoying, since it involves me having to be a wee bit more "interactive" than I really want to be...

And why can't I just watch the damned deleted scenes by themselves? It's not that I don't WANT to watch the movie again, it just sucks that I have to interrupt the natural flow of the thing in order to just see them. Why not let us be able to to just look at them by themselves? Pretty poor planning if you ask me...
Because it can never be stated too many times: X-Men is a better film than Spider-man.
GOOOOOD Second Disc features! Watching Bryan talk about the costumes and them being fitted and the internet etc is some neato shit!

Nice review!
Timely, as X2 hype grows this gets me even more interested. and after seeing the crappy tv edit last night on fox, there is even more reason to see the orriginal.
I may pick this one up.

again, nice review

I waited to buy X-men for this reason. Love the movie, hate the packaging. It's gonna have so many fingerprints on it. Love the free ticket to X2. The lady at Target made sure I knew this was the FIRST movie. She said people had bought 1.5 thinking it was a new movie.

Yes, I live in Georgia.
I just watched this. I don't have a 5 speaker setup. I've got my DVD player hooked up to my stereo with 2 speakers. blah blah blah. X-men 1.5 has no English 2 channel track. The result is loud as fuck effects and quiet dialogue. I'm going to Half for the old one. Looks like after waiting for this one, I'm still gonna get bit by the double dip.

edited thanks to Alexandra DuPont's review

Seeing as how it was only like 17 bucks when I bought it, and it came with a free ticket to either Daredevil or X-Men 2, so I think it was quite worth it.
