Ken Crane's Laser Lounge... A Thread for Laserdisc Fanatics... - Page 3

Welcome to the club brother. Now you're a cool motherfucker like all Laserdisc true believers.
Just nabbed "Evil Dead 2", the one with the red disc.

For a measley $13!

Still looking for "Rolling Thunder!"
I need to stop reading this thread, cause I'm going to start spending money I don't have... so tempted...
Here are some updates:

Finally received Firefox and Streets Of Rage Japanese Imports. The wait was long but both were totally worth it. They arrived mint and sealed and the transfer on both is excellent. I can't believe just how good the first few minutes of streets of fire look. I haven't seen it all yet so I can't describe what differences it has. I'm gonna have to rent the dvd and do a scene by scene analysis. I also just got Blade Runner: Dir's Cut Jap. Import. As far as Rolling Thunder is concerned it looks like the tracking number was bogus. My paypal money was sent back to me and I've heard nothing from the seller so I take it to mean that I won't be getting it. At least I didn't loose any money. Anybody picked up anything in the past few days? And Zod, how do you like your player and discs?
Digging the hell out it!

Just watched "Dawn of the Dead" and it looked great.

Sorry to hear about "Rolling Thunder", an excellent flick that must be owned, but as least no coin was lost.
Recent pick ups...

"Jason & the Argonauts"
"Escape from New York"
"Superman, Superman II"
Today I won "Citizen Kane!"
That's it. As soon as I get an apartment, a laserdisc player will be mine. Then, and only then, the quest for the Criterion Baron Munchausen LD will begin...
Another has been saved.

Just don't go on a Arye Gross crusade, Zod. Next thing you'll know...you'll have The Experts...
Nah, won't happen, D. My hatred for Barbarino will prevent that.

Time to re-open the Lounge. I'm back, so therefore it is too.

Last few weeks I've been in something of a Star Trek mood. Scoring Next Gen LDs left and right, which is a taxing experience as those dimwit Trekkies bid early and often.

Still seeing as how I only want 22 episodes of the 177 they produced...can't complain much.

Picked up:

- Ep. 63 and 64 "Yesterday's Enterprise"
- Ep. 107 and 108 "Unification 1 and 2"
- Ep. 129 and 130 "Relics"
- Ep. 149 and 150 "Second Chances"
- Ep. 163 and 164 "Parallels"
- Ep. 177 "All Good Things..."

Also got the first X-Files disc along with Demon Knight and the collections edition of The Howling.

Not too bad.

Let's try and get some people back in here...
Glad you are enjoying the Trek episodes, Django.

Extras of any kind?

X-Files? I thought you didn't like the show?

I just Evil Dead 2 in the mail today. Never have I seen this flick look this good. It's definitely better than the so-so DVD edition.

Of course it sounds better.

LOVE that artwork. A step up from the mess on the DVD. Dig the skull with the eyes.

I can see how people can become obsessed with these shiny muthas....

Grand ole' time by me indeed.

More bids have been placed on that glorious ebay. I'm think I'm addicted.
Here is my brand new collection. Not much, but I likey so far.

Evil Dead 2 (Elite) better than the DVD. From the artwork to the presentation.

Raiders of the Lost Ark- I hope the fourth-coming DVDs looks THIS good. And the sound, my god that lovely sound!

Hooper

Citizen Kane

Escape from New York

Superman

Superman II

Jason and the Argonaughts

Star Wars Trilogy (THX)

Dawn of the Dead

Black Rain

Tango & Cash

The latter two came with the player so don't judge.

I'm having a bitch of a time finding vinyl covers.

Any suggestions?
Try the big emma's for the covers:

http://www.bigemma.com/shop_acc.asp

I'll be posting the titles of the 40+ discs I've purchased in the last few weeks A.S.A.P.

John Nada for extras on the Next Gen LDs, Zod. Just the uncut episodes. No more, no less.

The X-Files...I like certain episodes like "Home," "Ice," the pilot. So for the ones I can score on LD...I'm trying to do so. Why? Dunno really, just am.

Last few days...all in the mail currently...

- Escape From New York (CE)
- Matinee (CAV w/ Mant! short)
- Johnny Handsome (ltbx)
- Island of Fire (import)
- Zu: Warriors From Magic Mountain
- Dellamorte Dellamore (import)
- Bram Stoker's Dracula (Sony)

More to come I'm sure.

Wonder who many times we've bid on the same items...
Thats cool, its better than dropping one hundred plus clams for the DVDs, nice as they are, they aren't worth that price. Trek is the same.

More LDs to the list:

Uncommon Valor
If Looks Could Kill
Re-Animator- I love that insane artwork!

The best part is not one cost me over $4.00!

The even better part is, I finally found one of the best B horror movies ever made by the insane mad-man Freddy Lord Dekker, "Night of the Creeps!"

The credit card is now going to be hidden and kept away from me until all debts are paid in full.

fucking ebay.
What kind of machines do you guys have? And what is the best version of Star Wars? Is there a big difference between the definitive version and the THX ones?
Thread Starter
I have recently aquired my second Pioneer. Don't recall the make and model numbers right now.

The best versions of Star Wars is either The Definitive Edition box or the CLV THX ones with that crappy "Big Head" artwork.

See both use the THX remastered editions of the original versions. Only TDE Box is in CAV.

The Box also has scattered audio commentary - someone says something every 15 minutes of big sequence...worse "commentary" ever - interviews with key behind the scenes people (who were within 15 feet at the time), a music video from Jedi, some animatics...

...and all the original theatrical trailers, including one for "Revenge of the Jedi."

The CLV editions only have interviews with Lucas conducted by Leonard Martin.

Zod...you sprung for CREEPS?

Damn...

Yep, Django, Creeps is mine. In the mail as I type.

Good ones there, Sho. Got a thing for Burt Reynolds, eh?

Another surprise is "From Beyound", hopefully it will be mine soon as well.

Since I'm on a Stuart Gordon kick, what's the LD for "Fortress" like?

I used to own the DVD, but it was too fuzzy to watch and it was in full-frame.

Anyone, Bueller?
It's funny with my man Burt. It just worked out that way. I was checking auctions that were closing within minutes and I came upon those a couple of days apart and got them dirt cheap.

I'm surfing Ebay right now, I just have one question: Is that Criterion Baron Munchausen worth $70? Considering one guy's made 32 of the 36 bids, I guess he thinks so...
I paid 100.00 for it when it first came out. It rocks.

What's with all the Japanese imports?

My latest wins are:

Star Trek: Generations
The Crow
Deadly Friend

I almost won "Night of the Hunter", almost. Damn.
Zod, Japanese Imports are very cool, great artwork, heavy cardboard for the sleeves, longer versions in many occasions, trailers, etc. A lot of obscure films only came out on laser in Japan. A good example being The Valachi Papers which I got as part of this collection. Imports are very expensive and very collectible. You weren't collecting when laser was king, at that time you could spend $40.00 for a brand new laserdisc of Hard Target or $80-100+ for the Japanesed Director's Cut LD. Basically, I just got the best fucking LD deal in all my years of collecting. At their heyday I could have made thousands out of this collection. Even today, some of this stuff would sell for a good bit on ebay.

Dude...you gotta tell me what's different on the Japanese Johnny Mnemonic.

I have the original rough cut which, outside of violence and gore...you see the cuts made with the laser whip... is actually SHORTER than the finished film.

The opening scene in the hotel room for example wasn't originally there. Added in reshoots.
The first thing I saw after I got this collection was Death Wish 4 which I hadn'd seen in years. As far as I understand the Japanese version of JM has more takeshi in it and that is easely evidenced by the cover having a picture of Keanu and the following being written vertically on the left side of the cover:
K
e
a
n
u

R
e
e
v
e
s

x

T
a
k
e
s
h
i

Oh yeah, the back cover has both of them featured prominently from the "not in the head scene". I will report back later with further detail when I actually watch it.

"Congo" for 7 clams.

Talking apes rule!
I'm sorry about that dude. Congo is not worth $7.00. Are you sure you should be posting the fact that you bought it?
SA, you are the one who's queer for Madonna, but at least its not one of her "acting" roles. She couldn't play a convincing corpse if she had a bullet in her brain.

And Heat... yeesh.

It's cool in the gang. Not everyone digs talking apes.

I bought Congo new when it came out.

$39.99.

Fuckers.

Scored a lot of Star Trek TNG episodes today.

And the remastered Godfather's 1 and 2.

Cool...
Zod, I bought 29 laserdiscs for $100.00 and amongst these great discs there happened to be a Madonna disc. I really don't care about getting it since I'll make a good profit selling it on ebay.
So...does Ebay also have cheap as hell LD players? Just so I can...maybe...see the 4 hours of docu footage and commentary on The Frighteners, and commentary on Trainspotting disc.

And I know theres more...but damn I want my 4 hours of behind the scenes footage on that Frighteners disc...

I also know you'll pay more for said 4 hours of footage than the player you'll need to play it on...

Ok enough of that crap...

I'm getting the feeling that this thread is on its last legs. I hope not since this is hands down the best thread I have ever participated in. So much shared info and no bullshit fighting.

So, in honor of the recently departed Django (Sean to his friends) I suggest we do a little sumpin sumpin to breathe life back into this mother.

How about reviews of our favorite LD?

Is this silently interesting to anyone in the slightest?

Suggestions, recipes, death threats?

If so say so, if not say so too and offer up something else we can waste time with.

Shogun, Tony Bag 'O Donuts, Andre... Bueller?

Anyone?

I know Django would understand the following request.

Anyone know where I can get a copy of "The Pirate Movie?"
What's up Zod? I honestly thought that this thread had died a painful death with Django's departure. I haven't spun my LD player in a while and haven't bought any discs since I last posted. I haven't had a lot of time to sit down and watch a lot of films lately due to being overworked but I'll get back to you soon in regards to my favorite LD. If I ever see the pirate movie on LD in a shop or on ebay I'll let you know. The disc I most want to get myself is The Gumball Rally because it's widescreen.
Totally understand, Sho.

I felt there was no reason for it to die just because our beloved Django is not here.

I too will keep my eyes peeled for the Gumball Rally.

Thanks for putting this board/Laserdisc thread up, Django ! I had quite a few LDs stolen a few years back and am now in the process of trying to get a few back. I was googling one and came across this joint ! Looking forward to hanging with everyone from time to time.

Did Ken Cranes once ! My uncle shopped there big time, Ed Flemming, and his very patient girlfriend let me spend a couple hours, maybe longer, going over the place with a fine tooth comb ! I live in Europe, Finland actually, and had never experienced a place like that before ! I also used to get the Image Entertainment catalogs. I would go over them whenever I had some free time working, then re-working, my list of LDs I was hoping get. Anyway, good to be here, now onto my hunt for a couple LDs on the net !! cool.gif
