Ken Crane's Laser Lounge... A Thread for Laserdisc Fanatics... - Page 2

Zod, I dunno where the best place to buy a LD player would be now, cause they're not as easy to find, and they aren't exactly hot sellers. Ebay, and pawn shops would be your best bets.

The best stuff to have on LD was and will always be the Criterion collection. There's still some stuff that hasn't come out yet (Ikuru, Throne of Blood, and many more) and stuff that will never happen (Baron Munchausen, The Player, The Fisher King). Generally people conisder LD 5.1 better than DVD.

I need more Criterion. I must feed the machine.

Last night off Ebay, I finally won the holy grail I've been after for over a decade. A disc I couldn't even find when it was in print.

Scream Greats Vol. 1 - Tom Savini, Master of Horror Effects

Now...must try for The Frighteners...
Thanks tons, Dre. I appreciate it.

Would you happen to have link to all things Criterion?

thanks!

This place seems with it. Dunno if you can still order from them or not. But...

<a href="http://www.mysunrise.ch/users/mmathis/criterion/catalog.html" target="_blank">http://www.mysunrise.ch/users/mmathis/criterion/catalog.html</a>

I swear I'm gunning for Chewer with the Dumbest collection of Laserdiscs award.

Some go for Kurosawa...I go for Pyun...
Not dumb, just different.

I'm gunning for that Criterion LD of Munchausen. Someday...

Missed that one, Django. They must have sent it to my old address. Shiiiit, now I'll have even less reasons to visit my friend's store in Garden Grove.

ZOD, Superman's Laserdisc image was grainy, faded, dirty and even soft looking. Sound was just okay. But regardless of sound or picture quality, it's the only way to get a wide-screen theatrical cut of the film right now. That alone makes me treasure it.

The new addy isn't that far removed from the old one.

16672 Beach Blvd., Suite L
Huntington Beach, CA

"In the same shopping center as 'The Good Guys' and 'Beverages & More'!"

Take that as you will, Folks.

But it is truly the end of an era.

And BIG EMMA'S USED LASERDISCS will be the death of me...
Thanks for the link, Django.

The search for a reliable player is on.

I have just bid on my first LD: SW the definitive Collection. If the bearded one nixes the idea of the OT on DVD, I will have it anyway. Neener.

Now, off to get a player...

Have you seen the DVD? It's pretty damn sweet.
Do all LDs have trailers?
Thread Starter
No, they don't. A lot do. A lot which not have them on DVD have them on laserdisc.

Like Flash Gordon for example. The Abyss box has a teaser to Aliens hidden after the credits which has never appeared anywhere else. The one on Strange Brew is DIFFERENT and funnier than the trailer on the DVD...

And a lot of LD have MORE extras than the DVDs. I just found out that both Mortal Kombat - trailers, deleted scenes, featurette, audio commentary - and Lost In Space - featurette, more trailers, and TV spots - are like that.

A word of advice, Zoddy. Never bid before the last two minutes on a Ebay auction. Silent moves strike better in the dark.

And that SW Box...Empire is missing roughly 30 seconds of footage at the start of side 4. When Leia is welding.

Go for the THX remaster with the horrible Stormtrooper cover. It's complete.

But the DC box is good for a few things. Early effects footage - cardboard cut out version of some of the Jedi space battle, AT-AT animatics - ...a shitload of original trailers - one for REVENGE of the Jedi - and some other fun stuff. However truth be told...the box is probably the biggest disapointment ever released on the format...
The only disappointment I found was the horribly sporadic "commentary", which if I remember correctly is just pasted together interview snippets that you can find on the supplement sides.

Zod: if you're interested in all things Lucas, might I suggest looking for a THX WOW Demo disc. It's basically scenes from the SW OT, Indy trilogy and Willow edited together so certain retailers could use it to show off their sound systems. On side 2 it includes some raw footage from Episode IV and Last Crusade, used to illustrate how sound design works. David Prowse acting under his mask is a hoot. Kinda pricey, though.

Beware Ebay's sniper bidders. Hope you have a fast connection...

One thing about that Quadrilogy thing... I hope it has the Aliens trailer done up like the Alien one... with the shot of the APC heading out on the plains intercut with Hicks clipping up his boot armour... with the really odd high pitched pulsing sound... such a great trailer. I only ever saw it on a VHS of Enemy Mine.
Thread Starter
Yeah...that's the teaser I was talkin' about.

Funny thing was how all the Aliens trailers showed up on The Abyss disc...not on the actual Aliens LD.

Even funnier is how all the Aliens TV SPOTS showed up on The Abyss discs...not on the actual Aliens DVD.

So it's basically a pattern...
One of the best thing about Lasers was that you could tape them. Share them with the unintiated. Make Trailer tapes. Sell copies of popular movies at high school for some scratch. Make personalized cuts of your favorite "too long" movies.

Which meant, unless you had a editing bay at home, you were timing the pause button. Which you had to do for every side break, but just the same. I made some nice 90 minute cuts of stuff like The Fugitive, and Jurassic Park.
I used to make trailer tapes all the time. I remember using a 4hr tape on long play, and putting all of the trilogy on that one tape, and throwing dozens of different trailers before it.

Can't wait for DVD-R prices to come down so I can do that again. I was begging for it today after I found out the M:i-2 disc doesn't have the trailer on it... which was one I really dug.

You can't do it with DVD-R/DVD+R as the recorders have electronic copyguard which can't be turned off. I freezes the recording DVD and locks it out as the words "COPYGUARDED" fill the data screen.

Only way you can transfer anything from DVD to DVD-R is if you're using a DVD player which you can hack off the macrovision.

Or if the DVD in question isn't copyguarded.

So I've had to do Trailer DVDs using LD or VHS based ones.

And the real pisser is...you can't even tape a copyguarded DVD onto video and get it to work. I made a DVD+R of SCREAM GREATS VOL. ONE and I wanted to put a smattering of Tom Savini trailers on there.

The Anchor Bay stuff...Knightriders, The Dead Films, Martin...were fine. No CG. The Paramount Friday the 13th flicks...Creepshow...forget about it. Kinda pissed me off.

Then again...trailer tapes probably outta be TAPES anyway. Just scream cooler...
I used the A -&gt; B Repeat Play feature and made a 12 minute loop of the traincar love scene in <strong>Fair Game</strong>, which I tacked on at the end of the dub tape I made for my best friend. Nothing but 12 minutes of Cindy Crawford bare boobage, rythymically punctuated by her gun discharge.

He called it the "greatest dub tape ever".
I've made so many scene collection tapes it's sickening, which lasers made possible. The a-&gt;b repeat loop on a good player was pretty sweet, especially on a CAV disc, so you could take the sweetest moments from the Coppola Dracula and make an awesome background tape.

Yeah, it's cool. But I miss my childhood memories. wink

Django, you're right about the missing "welding scene" in the first pressings of THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION. But all further ones, repaired that error.

Still, the CLV ones are the same transfer, with less side changes. Definitely an asset.

Friends, Chudites lend me your ear.

I am now the proud owner of a (semi) new Pioneer Laserdisc player.

Part of the club now I am.

Also, I will soon have in my grubby little hands the Definitive Star Wars Collection (original versions)

If it never comes to DVD, so fucking what?

Lasers now on the list to buy are:

Dawn of the Dead
Throne of Blood
Escape from NY
Hooper
Hard-boiled
The Killer

Anyone have any suggestions on what to buy?

It's a bit more expensive, but you can run your signal through a "frame store" (time base corrector) and it will eliminate the macrovision.

Not sure how much one of these costs, though, but I've used the one I have at work to copy dvd's to both vhs & dvd-r on many occasions.
Congrats Zod. See my previous post for my suggestion. Not really necessary but cool to have, if you can find and afford it.

And what's this about Django at the T2 convention?
All you have to do is got to a Sam's Club or Costco and buy a Daewoo DVD player or something its equivalent. You'll pay around $90 and with just a few remote button presses you'll disable macrovision and be able to play all regions. I speak from personal expirience.

Is this the American version of the foreign version known as Salute Of The Jugger.
On a different note, I'd like you all to look at this seller's link:

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=381&item=331237476 7" target="_blank">http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=381&item=331237476 7</a>

Do not ever, under any circurmstances buy anything from this cocksucker. If you look at this feedback you will notice that this asshole buys a laserdisc for $5-30 bucks and then proceeds to sell it for $30-200 depending on the disc. What's worse is people pay these overinflated prices because they love a particular movie. I'm all for supply and demand but this guy is taking advantage. Just look at his history. Collecting LDs should be fun, not highway robbery.
Django I can't type worth a damn at this hour. I was asking wether the LD of Blood Of Heroes you purchased was the American HBO Home Video release or The Japanese LD with the version known as Salute Of The Jugger. I'll give you a heads up as soon as I know wether there are any differences on the Japanese Streets Of Fire.

$49.99 for...TimeCop...

Right.

The version I have is indeed the US HBO Home Video release. Standard late 80's / early 90's Image cover style...one-sheet in the middle in front of shiny LD.

No chapter stops. Picture looks like crap.

But it's better than video.

What peaked my interest on the Streets of Fire is that he listed it as "uncut." Now it probably doesn't mean shit...but I do know there was some stuff cut from the US release.

Nudity at Torchie's for example.

If there is more nudity or violence...a trade might be in order for a video copy...
I saw the Japanese version almost 15 years ago in high school, and IIRC Flashdancer Marine Jahan shows her tit thru the see-thru net top for like a flash of a second... But my memory's hazy, so ShogunAssassin, please do correct me if I'm wrong.
Shogun, how is that "Rolling Thunder" disc? Love that movie! A thousand times better than "Taxi Driver" imho.

I have been looking forever for that movie, hell, even on video its a tough find. Renting it is becoming harder and harder as the years pass.

If anyone spots it on the bay a shout out my way would be appreciated.
Zod, I'm in total agreement in regards to Rolling Thunder. I think that Taxi Driver is an excellent film, but I believe that Thunder surpasses it. According to the tracking info it's still on its way. I'll let you know how it is once I get it. It'll defenetly be better than the horrible LP made in Canada version being sold now which looks like it's a 10th generation copy.
