Napster and the evil within

I know EVERY college kid on Earth uses this little shortcut to great music, but I was wondering if anyone out there does.
A lot of us burn our own CDs and Napster is a treat for all consumers involved. It is interesting to see the bands battle it out over Napster, what with Metallica and the American Recording something or other lawsuit and then everybody's favorite (I dislike 'em too fellas) Limp Bizket (is that right?) doing free shows with Napster as a huge partner.
Also, quite a few colleges have banned this from their campuses. A few legal battles are going on over this too.
I just wanted to see if there were any insights into the ethics of Napster or if people think it is on its way out.

Do you really not know? Or is that a joke...
For those who don't know,
Napster (www.napster.com) music sharing community which you download and then share and download MP3s. Hey, I don't know if their illegal or not! But the reason its all the rage in colleges is because of the fast as hell download time. We can get typical songs in about 40 secs! And these are almost any songs. From there it is a quick step to a great compilation album.
A lot of people (music people) are mad cause of the lack of royalties and the fact that people do this rather than buy the album.
I find it okay because I would never go buy most of these albums. If I were to download a song by Styx, I don't feel bad because I wouldnt get it other wise. You see?

But it is a cool thing. Go and download it.

I use my 56k modem so most songs take like 30 minutes, but I've snatched over 4 hours of music from napster... great stuff. I hope it no go bye bye.

Napster was actually banned from use here at UMD... =(
basts

Until then I was downloading songs in about 90 seconds apiece..

I use napster on my T1 here. It's nice to download 4 songs at a time in about 3 minutes.

Mulitiple downloads are treats to all.
Did you see Dr. Dre (I think it was him, maybe Ice Cube) has joined the lawsuit to remove Napster from all of us nice people. I don't like that.

adam: you are correct about dre throwing in with those opposed to napster. however limp bizkit is scheduling releases of singles through napster on mp3... yes, i've seen the fred durst posts, h.a.m. and i agree. while i don't like the bizkit, at least durst and crew are embracing a progressive stance on new technology... who knows how the advent of higher speed access and digital compression will affect the future of media?

roll with the new,

I've heard that Metallica is also in the suit against napster. It's not like they are scraping for cash, and mp3's are hurting them. . .

Oh yeah, and now we have about 4,000 mp3s now.

I use Napster the most for MP3's out of anything else available, it's my favorite outlet but sometimes my download time still takes a bit longer than I'd like even tho I'm on a cable modem. Perhaps I'm just impatient. But I still have more full CD's than I would if there were no Napster, whoo hoo!

And I think the whole Metallica thing is abso-fucking-lutely ridiculous. It would be one thing if were the record company pressing the suit since the bulk of the band's $$ comes mainly from touring but nooooo. Even if they win, people will just get the MP3's somehwere else anyway.

if napster looks like its going to lose the lawsuit, they should just open up the source code and let the 'net freaks run wild with it just to screw over the stupid record companies. the ironic thing is that record sales are up and have been continuing to rise in the past few years. i actually make it a point to buy the albums of artists that i actually support, but hey, that's not going to stop me from ripping mp3s and having them so i don't have to hunt down the @$#@%ing cds every few songs.

$.02,

who said it wasn't piracy?

mp3s are a higher quality version of copying a tape of your favorite songs, except you can trade it with a million of your closest friends.

i don't advocate rampant piracy myself -- i do buy the albums of artists i support, but i'm not buying a warrant album to listen to "cherry pie" anytime soon. it may be hypocritical, but c'est la vie.

If I could do any of the things listed above, I would.

But lemme tell ya how utterly technologically incompetent I am: I don't even have the words to express it.

Weird that I'm trying to start up a software company, huh?

grendel, you constantly manage to amaze me, and not in that "WOW, Cool!" way.

and thanks willko!

Thanks, chenzzo, I like you too...

And what's not cool about doing something that you have absolutely no qualifications to do, anyway? I certainly wouldn't write the software...that's what my computer nerd friends are for. I make the deals. THEY want me to do that on account of they need someone to translate from normalspeak to nerdspeak, and then vice versa to the client, and they have drafted me for this job.

Wow! Cool!

Besides, man, I already have you slated to design the packaging for release (okay, so it's MONTHS away, but fukket, gotta plan early), so don't tell me you're gonna turn down the work?!

i just saw this link on another website... hilarious. remember the encyclopedia brown mysteries series? they're sorta recent, and if you are 20 something you might have read some as a kid. here's some sleuthin' for the mp3-savvy set...

if only metallica and dre could recoup their album losses for a quarter...
