Best Side One, Track One - Page 2

My off-the-top-of-my-head list, which discounts tracks that I associate with "greatest hits" more than with their original albums. That leaves some great classics out--sorry "Baba O'Reilly" and "Sympathy for the Devil." EDIT: Basically, what Z-Man said.

"Everything in it's Right Place" - Radiohead, Kid A

"Bring Da Ruckus" - Wu-Tang Clan, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)

"20th Century Man" - The Kinks, Muswell Hillbillies

"Five Years" - David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust

"Little Child Running Wild" - Curtis Mayfield, Superfly

"Wordless Chorus" - My Morning Jacket, Z

Looking over that list, most of mine are mood-setters or tracks that establish the aesthetic the whole album will follow, and some aren't even the best songs on their respective albums. But the album would definitely lose something were that song not in the lead position.

"(Theme From) The Monkees "The Monkees The Monkees
"So Yo Want To Be A Rock N' Roll Star" The Byrds Younger Than Yesterday
"Like A Rolling Stone" Dylan Highway 61 Revisited
"You Ain't Going Nowhere" Byrds Sweethearts of the Rodeo
Stand!" Sly & The Family Stone Stand!
"Get Up I Feel Like Being A Sex Machine" James Brown Sex Machine
"I'm Bad" L.L. Cool J Bigger And Deffer
"Controversy" Prince Controversy
"You're Gonna Get Yours" Public Enemy Yo! Bum Rush The Show
"Highway Star" Deep Purple Machine Head

A few that I eliminated from the short list:

Judas Priest - The Hellion/Electric Eye (That is the perfect opening for a heavy metal album, but let's be honest, I haven't listened to Judas Priest since I was about 17, and that's not an accident.)
AC/DC - Hell's Bells
Stooges - Down in the Street
Dead Kennedys - The Government Flu
Bob Marley and the Wailers - There's a Natrual Mystic
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Bellbottoms

These are some of my favorite songs that happen to be side 1, track 1, but they don't feel like especially great openers, just great songs that could be anywhere on the album (these would be analogous to White Light/White Heat, Jeannie Jones and Smells Like Teen Spirit) :

Stooges - Search and Destroy
Modern Lovers - Roadrunner
Dictators - Faster and Louder
Black Flag - Rise Above
Fishbone - Ugly
Pixies - Debaser
Sly & the Family Stone - Luv 'n Haight
They Might Be Giants - Ana Ng

These ones I eliminated because the rest of the album that follows isn't that great:

The Rites of Spring - Spring
Scream - It Came Without a Warning
Bahia Black - Retro Caldato

I don't know...that's a hell of an album opener.

More:
'2112' - Rush, from '2112'
'Subdivisions' - Rush, from 'Signals'
'Battery' - Metallica, from 'Master of Puppets' (in all honesty, this should win the title of Best Side 1, Track 1. It's arguably the best metal album ever made)

And here are a few that I eliminated because they're on EP's:

Butthole Surfers - The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave (the first time I heard this was a mind-blowing, life-changing experience)

Fugazi - Margin Walker (this one would definitely have been a frontrunner otherwise)
Mudhoney - Touch Me I'm Sick
Nip Drivers - Nip Driver

Search and Destroy, though obvious, is my favorite Stooges opener. Raw Power indeed!

Deep Purple, a underrated band, had a knack for great openers. <"Speed King", "Fireball" & "Burn">

It totally is. If I still liked the style of music Judas Priest play, I would have that one in my top 10, no question (and it continues into "Riding on the Wind", perfect follow-up). But I really don't.

I prefer Funhouse to Raw Power, but it's close. For that matter, "1969" is a great opener.

Truth, Deep Purple deserve to be as revered as Zeppelin and Sabbath. "Speed King" is especially a favorite of mine.

Deep Purple and ESPECIALLY Rainbow are vastly underrated bands.

For that matter:
'Man on the Silver Mountain' - Rainbow, 'Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow'
'Tarot Woman' - Rainbow, 'Rising'
'Long Live Rock and Roll' - Rainbow, 'Long Live Rock and Roll'
'Neon Knights' - Black Sabbath, 'Heaven and Hell'
'Stand Up and Shout' - Dio, 'Holy Diver'

Some great choices. Good work, people. (Patrick, you beat me to 'Welcome to the Working Week!') Nonetheless, I'll add:

'Crime Scene Part One' - The Afghan Whigs (Black Love)
'Something I Learned Today' - Husker Du (Zen Arcade)
'This Is A Call' - Foo Fighters (Foo Fighters)
'Silver'/'The Cutter' - Echo & The Bunnymen (Ocean Rain/Porcupine)
'Big Exit' - PJ Harvey (Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea)
'Travel By Telephone' - Rival Schools (United By Fate)
'Pink Light' - Laura Veirs (Saltbreakers)
'Bixby Canyon Bridge' - Death Cab For Cutie (Narrow Stairs.)

The Whigs are easily my favourite from this list, though I love 'em all and many of those already mentioned.

That's a great song, but I always thought it would have been better if they'd started with "Somewhere".

I typed Remain in Light, which has another great opening track in Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On), but yeah, I Zimbra is.

Great choice. Every so often I pick up the guitar, (badly) play the verse riff, and remember how much I love that song.

Good one. I never finish that album, though; it's mostly downhill after the title track halfway through.

Seconded. She comes out swinging on that one.

I'm going to go with my gut ... the first song I thought of after reading the title of this thread is Transmaniacon MC by Blue Oyster Cult. It's my favorite love letter to Altamont.

Always good to see more love for BOC.
