And it goes a little somethin' like this -- hit it!
1) Prince (Life, Greenwich Village, 1999) -- Four hours of funk starting *after* 2:00 AM. This was before Prince became a Jehova's Witness and stopped singin' his nasty songs. My friend got me into this show, and we ended up hanging out with Vernon Reid all night.... or morning. A surreal experience made *funky* by the impeccable, yet soulful, musicianship on display.
2) Red Hot Chili Peppers/Smashing Pumpkins/Pearl Jam (I think it was the Cleveland Music Hall, it wasn't the Agora, 1991) -- A legendary tour. Unforgettable even if the Pumpkins were lame (Billy did nothing but bitch about the crowd being out of it). Of course, they had to follow up the then-barely known PJ, who rocked hard despite being largely disrespected by the audience. Of course, my group of friends were standing and rockin' out all during their show; our enthusiasm was rewarded by Vedder stage diving *over* the orchestra pit and running down to our row to bring us on stage during the furious finale. I got tackled by security, but it was cool to look up and see my friend Mark dosey-do-ing with Jeff Ament. Oh, and the Chili's were their usual rowdy selves.
3) Radiohead (MSG, 2001) -- Rock and roll.
4) U2 (Cobo Hall, Detroit Rock City, 1986 or '85, can't remember) -- I was still in fucking grade school, but begged like a brat for my brother to take me along. U2 was touring behind The Unforgettable Fire at the time; it was like watching them become the biggest rock band before our eyes.
5) 1999: A Complete Performance of Prince's Landmark LP w/ The Roots, Vernon Reid and Guests (Brooklyn Academy of Music, Dec. 1999) -- A great jam session. High points: Joan Osborne vamping through "Little Red Corvette", some relative unknown wrecking shop with "International Lover", and Chocolate Genius leading the encore with a stylistic circus version of "Irresistable Bitch".
6) Lollapalooza (Blossom Music Center, 1991) -- A mild-mannered day in the rain until the hometown NIN took the stage, and kicked off their set with "Head Like A Hole". Next thing I knew, I was off of the lawn, and in front of the stage. Thanks to some chemical assistance later in the day, I peaked during Jayne's set, and was apparently crying during "Three Days", claiming it to be the most beautiful moment in my life. So much happened during this show that I wouldn't dream of getting into here; it set the stage for a great Senior year in High School.
7) A Tribe Called Quest/De La Soul/Souls of Mischief (Bogarts, Cincinnati, Dec. 1993) -- I love hip-hop, but rap shows are generally a waste of time, as most of these guys have no idea how to translate their studio wizardry to the stage. Not so with this group. Everyone had come to see ATCQ -- they'd just released Midnight Marauders -- but De La stole the show. They also figure into.....
8) Springfest 1994 (The parking lot next to Zachary's, Athens, OH) -- An odd collection of acts that I helped put together; most notably, De La and Guided By Voices. The performances were a good time, but the highlights of the day were playing basketball with De La during some of the lesser acts sets, and partying with Pollard and GBV that night (sadly, De La had to skip town right after their show).
9) INXS (Anderson Arena, Bowling Green, OH, 1986) -- Kick had *just* been released, "Need You Tonight" was climbing the charts, and I was in Seventh Grade watching yet another band on the verge of their big breakthrough. These guys were a great fucking live act. I miss 'em.
10) Nirvana (that music hall right adjacent to the OSU campus where all the big acts play, Columbus, OH, Dec. 1991) -- Like being ground zero for the Grunge explosion, which rendered this show half-euphoric/half-annoying. Frankly, the band was wild, but off (the sound was pure mud). Still, it was a crazy night.
Just looking back over this list, I must admit I've led a rather charmed life in terms of concerts. Hell, I'm not even sure this is a definitive list; there are lots of other great evenings I'm leaving off.
