A real reason to complain about Metallica

Besides the usual gripes that Metallica has gone soft (They still rock) or that they are hunting down Napster for poor reasons, (I sorta agree with 'em) what about the fact that the production value of their albums has become so predictable? They sound the same on every album after the Black CD. I think it's cuz of Bob Rock, their producer. He makes them too shiny. Metallica's supposed to be ugly!

I don't know if you've been watching VH1's "The List" with Lars Ulrich last week, but they are ugly!

J/K!

You seem familiar. Are you a Sewer Chewer I know?

Right. Yaeh I saw him. He's a lousy host. Meatloaf was a better host. Mmm, meatloaf...

I see no reason to hate them. St. Anger didn't quite work but DEATH MAGNETIC was a return to form.

If you still listen to Metallica, then I don't know what'll drive you away.

If you try to continue conversations started ten years ago, I don't know what you're looking for.

In light of St. Anger, this is a good case of "careful what you wish for". I stuck on Death Magnetic the other day though and for the most part it still holds up.

When I first saw this thread, I was hoping Lars was caugt touching children or something. I am disappointed.

Death Magnetic sounds like a return to form, but it's a trick. That album isn't memorable at all.

It's a straightforward thrash album. Nothing more or less. It's perfectly solid ass-kicking album under those criteria.

Who thought it was a good idea to resurrect a ten year old thread? The thread was started prior to St. Anger or DM being released, it's not really relevant.

I could've sworn there was an actual dedicated Metallica thread somewhere, too.

I'm sure there is. I know there was a Death Magnetic thread.

Since it was re-opened, I might as well chime in that I still really like DM - though I will only listen to one of the better Guitar Hero rips since I can't stand the production of the official release. They could have left off both The Day That Never Comes as well as The Unforgiven III and it would have been a much better/tighter album.

True, I'll give you that. I enjoyed it completely while I was listening to it. Just commenting on the fact people compared it so favorably to the "glory days" when it was released. It's certainly not terrible or anything.

I still think that if Lars raised his game the way the rest of the band did, this wouldn't even be a conversation. A decent modern drummer could've made this a masterpiece.

Other than the "BANGING ON A TRASHCAN" snare, I thought he was the high point of St. Anger. Not saying much, I realize.

Really? This exists?

Forgive my ignorance. I tuned out after Load (of Shit) and More Load Of Shit.

I do remember, however, that one of those atrocities had The Unforgiven II on it.

So, just curious... How do the work "Unforgiven three" into the lyrics of the song?

They were so very clever for the second one, right?

"Or... Are you UNFORGIVEN TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO?"

On second thought, they should have called it Unforgiven Too, in true cheesy sequel tradition.

Then this new one could be called Unforgiven Times Three.

They don't. It doesn't bear much resemblance to any of the others.

If there's any song off that album that would've benefited from Michael Kamen still being alive, its that.

I don't think it stands up badly next to Justice at all. In fact I prefer it in some ways - not quite so monotonous. I'd probably dump Unforgiven III, a solid chunk of that instrumental track and probably Cyanide as well, but the rest is about as solid an attempt at creating the missing link between Justice and Black I could've hoped for from a band this old. And lets be honest: Metallica's perpetually whining fanbase would've found a reason to throw a shit fit no matter what they released.

Unforgiven III is not a bad song, necessarily, it just doesn't fit well with the other tracks - at least IMO. It might be the best of the three Unforgivens as it sounds nothing like the other two - again IMO. They could have left off the other "ballad" - The Day That Never Comes - and turned in a tight 60 minute album with very little bloat. I like Cyanide and the instrumental track, but everyone has their own opinions and tastes.
