I'd love to see her video for that. Babooshka meets Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

For instance, the Sarah McLachlan commercial with the animals is brutal, but I can't say that the song would do a ton for me minus the abused cats and dogs.
I must agree somewhat. The Pretenders I'll Stand By You when laid over that ad for the WWF utterly kills me, and while I love the song on it's own, it's only in that ad it squeezes a tear out of me.

Gabriels Oboe is a bit different for me as I heard it and knew it long before I'd seen The Mission.

Bang. I bought the album many years ago for this one song. It's very much an 'only listen to when alone and usually with a glass of wine' piece for me, because I go a big blubbery one without fail. God I adore Kate.

ETA: Actually looking back over the last page or so of this thread, Hammerhead - are you me?

Don't tell me you've actually seen The Ghost and Mrs. Muir!

Was a regular Sunday matinee here in Oz growing up. Love me a bit of Rex.

Awesome. It's rather obscure around here, though I did get to see a pristine print at the Stanford Theatre once.

"You wrote the book!"

I just realized that in my list a couple of pages ago I forgot to mention one of my all time favorite tearjerkers, "Keep Me In Your Heart" by Warren Zevon. Pretty much the best funeral song ever written.

These songs remind me of my Oma (Dutch for grandmother), a tiny woman with a mischievious twinkle in her eye and a heart bigger than heaven. Ave Maria and Nessun Dorma.

Life Is A Pigsty, a more recent MORRISSEY track, never fails to get me a bit misty.

Everyone always picks Hurt, but I always found On A Evening Train to be Johnny Cash's best cover. It's just a gut wrenching song, especially if you are familiar with what was happening in his life when he sang it.

Gracie by Ben Folds

I went through a divorce last year and get to see my little girl (5 yrs old) on the weekends, which is clearly not enough. This song destroys me.
