Wimbledon - horses for courses

Thread Starter
In light of the number of top seeds tumbling out of Wimbledon (Sampras, Agassi etc) - is it now too much to ask that tennis players be experts on all surfaces?

Much as I admire the Spanish players (and those from other nations) - what's the point if you can only play on a surface such as clay?

There have been many experts on all surfaces, but this years Wimbledon was the WACKIEST ever.

I wanted Tim Henman to win so bad, and frankly I am tired of seeing sisters play against each other.

Well, the Mercedes Benz Cup starts the 22nd of July, and then there is the Tennis Master Series in Canada starting the 29th. Maybe they want be as wacky.(But they aren't GRAND SLAMS) OH WELL. Maybe Andy Roddick will win one of those.

Maybe it would help out if they did not have the tournaments so close together, and GO GUGA.

I haven't seen many tennis threads posted in this Sports forum. If there is anyone on the board that enjoys tennis or watches it, I was wondering who you think will win in the match tonight between Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi in Cincinnati? It is a quarter-finals match, and will be on ESPN tonight at 7:00pm EST, I think.

Tennis has changed over the years, and it is much faster paced than it used to be. Now, some of the players have serves of 172 mph and even faster. Tonight's match between Agassi and Hewitt should be fast paced, because that is how Agassi likes to play. Agassi is in excellent physical condition and is playing some great tennis, though he is considered one of the "older guys" playing now. Compared to the other player's ages, that isn't a misconception.

Lleyton Hewitt is from Australia, and is 21. He is currently ranked number 1 in the world. He has power, is focused, and is tough to beat. He too is in great physical condition.

Will "the young and fittest" or will "the older and fittest" win tonight?

I am going to say this match will go into 3 sets , and I may be wrong, but I think Agassi will beat Lleyton . I think one of the sets will go into a tie break. Oh, I cannot wait to see this match.

Again, who do you think will win?

<img src="http://www.wimbledon.com/images/players/atph432.jpg" alt="" /> Lleyton Hewitt, AUS, seeded number 1

VS

<img src="http://www.wimbledon.com/images/players/atpa092.jpg" alt="" /> Andre Agassi, USA, seeded number 4

Again, Agassi in three sets.

172mph serves aside, I miss the wacky antics of a John McEnroe.
Yeah Kronos, I agree. Here are some famous McEnroe quotes. He was a trip.

"Now I get docked 10 to 20 per cent (of my appearance fee) if I don't yell at some people and break at least one racquet"-McEnroe

"I'm not having points taken off me by an incompetent old fool. You're
the pits of the world."
- John McEnroe to tennis judge Edward James.

"You can't see as well as these fucking flowers - and they're fucking
plastic."
- John McEnroe (to a line judge).

"What other problems do you have besides being unemployed, a moron and
a dork?"
- John McEnroe (to a spectator at a tennis match).

He has mellowed out quite a bit, but he is claiming now that he can beat the William's sisters. I don't think they would be ready for him to be honest. wink

God I think that is he thing tennis is missing so bad now. Character. What we have had was quick serves and lack of intensity. McEnroe and Jimmy Connors could get a crowd going like no one. Now we have no one. I truly miss the ability to see the player banter back and forth with himself and the crowd and the judges. Tennis is such an emotional sport too that it is a shame it is like it is today. Seeing someone go after that ball relentlessly, throwing themselves ll over. I truly mis that. I would honestly rather watch a fired up tennis match then I would a basketball game.

Hopefully we will see a change again from what the serve is now. Soon those fast serves will not benefit oneself in a match as much as they do today. That and I can't stnad the Williams. I understand what they are doing is helping diversify the sport and it adds more power to the women's game but seriously I just can't stand the hyp surrounding them. I realize the only have a power game and are not made of any finesse at all. Too bad Hinigs isn't inshape like she was back when she first came on the tour. She was formidable as well as full of finesse.

Time will tell how things go. Hopefully Capriati wil improve her current attitude and show women's tennis hat for.

Oh and I like Rodick. He seems the closet to an emotional player nowadays. I pick hewitt to win over Agassi and heres to hoping Michael Chang makes his come back. NOW!

Gee guys, thanks for your reply to your thread. I got some insight into why some people find tennis boring now days. However, it really isn't!!!! Roddick does get an attitude on the court and let's them have it at times. He is our next Agassi/Sampras I think. HE IS AWESOME.

Yeah, the William's sisters are great, and they deserve all the hype they get,but it is just boring watching sisters play each other. That is just my opinion. I am not much into women's tennis, but I do like Capriati..and Jennifer can get an attitude too. I like that!!!

I saw Andy Roddick on the Kilborn show and loved it...here is the clip and it is very funny. If you get a chance..watch it.
<a href="http://www.andyroddick.com/av.php?p_av_file_id=64" target="_blank">Andy Roddick on Craig Kilborn...really neat show.</a>

I hope this works.

GO AGASSI!!!!!!!

Dambit,

Agassi Lost, Roddick Lost

The match between Agassi and Hewitt was incredible though. Agassi was up 3-0 in the first set at one point, but Lleyton came back. It was a very close match, but Lleyton won in two sets. 7-5, 6-3. Enough said. Note_ The guys only play 3 sets in the "Tennis Masters Series."

Let me think....I guess I will pull for Hewitt now. Go Hewitt!
