Horror fiction

Saw the scariest ever in a bookstore today: "The Klingon Hamlet"

Some yahoos took a line from Star Trek 6, and published a bunch of gibberish on the right hand page with the original Shakespearean text on the left. This is the biggest ass I've ever seen in the stores...

But, seriously, horror fiction: what are your favorites?

Mine: Carrion Comfort -- Dan Simmons
Song of Kali -- Dan Simmons
The Shining -- Stephen King

Many more, of course...

Salem's Lot and Desperation
BTW, I own the Klingon Dictionary. Good for a laugh.

Check out Joe Lansdale- he's got a site at www.joerlansdale.com that has great stories and excerpts from his sublime Hap and Leonard series. For those of you familiar with the books, I just read that he'd like Don Coscarelli to direct the big screen adaptation!

For De Mille fans, check out Stephen Hunter. Read them in chronological order for best results.

Oooo, yes! Lansdale! Check out The Nightrunners (God of the Razor!) Check out The Drive-In and The Drive-In 2. And the Hap & Leonard stuff is too cool -- Bad Chili, Mucho Mojo, The Two-Bear Mambo ... great stuff!

I also like Robert McCammon quite a lot. Boy's Life, Stinger, Mine, Gone South ... great stuff!

Also, a now defunct publisher called Dark Harvest published a series of horror collections called Night Visions (I think 9 of them). #5 can be found in paperback (I think called "The Skin Trade"). These are great books if you can find 'em. Each book has a different editor, and three authors given an empty canvas to fill. Whatever they want to write in whatever form -- short stories, novellas -- or one great big piece. "Just fill a given number of pages..." Great stuff.

At The Mountains of Madness -- Lovecraft
A Rose for Emily -- Faulkner

Just too much good reading out there!
