You know, I've got 2 Dan Simmons novels and I haven't read them yet, perhaps I will pick the up this weekend, again, I've only read the short stories. Usually I field novel buying through anthologies first and I liked his work, I'm just usually too busy to read novels nowadays

Which two do you have, girl?

I'm not too sure, I know one of them is Children of the Night, and I think the other one is Carrion Comfort (your list is my-tee handy).

Oh! Carrion Comfort first! Over 1,000 pages of pure vampire bliss. Children of Night is one of his "lesser" novels, which still means damned good. And check out Song of Kali for a great read (I think/hope N. Nunziata will soon agree).

For those of you out there looking for another "young boys coming of age in the 50's" type horror story, a la King's "The Body" read either McCammon's Boy's Life or Simmons' Summer of Night.

I'm in the process of reading my first Dan Simmons novel, which is 'Hyperion', on the advice a little red-haired girl. How long is the 'Hyperion' series and is it worth reading the whole thing?

Four books -- Hyperion, Fall of Hyperion, Endymion, Rise of Endymion. They take place in the same universe, but the first two are complete. The later two take place several decades later, but contain their own story.

I definitely believe they're worth the read!

Moreso than you can readily imagine!

Also, 'Summer of Night' is the only horror novel to have ever frightened me.

Simmons is the man. In an anecdote about how he started professional writing, he talks about how he cornered Harlan Ellison at a convention and pitched him the Hyperion idea. Harlan, all of 5'2" when wearing lifts, told him that if he didn't become a writer he was going to beat him to death.

So Simmons wrote.

I would too, if Harlan threatened to beat me. Imagine a badger on PCP.

Well ... not how I've read the tale. Harlan Ellison wrote the introduction to Simmons' short-story collection Prayers to Broken Stones. Simmons was in Ellison's Clarion West workshop, and they critiqued his story The River Styx Runs Upstream, which eventually won the Twilight Zone first-published fiction contest (remember that mag?). It's a great introduction, written by a great writer, about a great writer.

I am also the proud owner of a small press chapbook of Simmons' called Banished Dreams. It is dream passages that were taken out of Summer of Night by the editor. They're fun!

Your collection and memory are exhaustive, and I applaud you. Why, with your wit and imagination, you do not write for a living yourself is a mystery to me, but then many things are.

Ellison is first atop my list of...well, not influences, necessarily, but writers that I would not have ever written without.

Does that make sense? It does to me.

You mean you're not being paid for posting here?

Oh, by the way, Nick -- where's my bonus check for breaking 1000 posts?
