Robert Bloch, Ray Bradbury, and other older writers

The first horror book I ever read was an anthology of Bloch stories published (I believe) in the early 70's called 'Such Stuff As Screams Are Made Of'. I loved it so much I stole it from the library, and I still have it to this day (bring it on CHUDcop!). I must've been all of 11 or so. Anyhow, it has a story in it called 'The Masterpiece', about the ultimate revenge that a painter takes on the woman who betrayed him and stole his painting and gave it to his best friend who claimed it as his own and reaped rewards for the theft. It is a beautiful and holy thing. Psycho is a fine novel, but overrated compared to his shorter gems.

Anybody here snake Bradbury's 'Quicker Than The Eye' anthology from the bargain table? I got it for $2.99 at Barnes y Noble Bibliotista and consider that a steal, even though I DID pay for it.

Actually, come to think of it, I had returned some books to the store that I hadn't actually bought, and got it on store credit, so I guess I did steal it.

I don't advocate that, though.

Stealing is bad.

Heh.

Damn the Man!

Roger Zelazny. My mom bought me Unicorn Variations after she read the cover. "'More beer,' quoth the Griffin." or something to that effect.

It was so good. I went out and got Warriors of Blood and Dream, just because he edited it. If I get more money, I'll look for more of his stuff.

I think my first Bloch story was Enoch -- read on assignment back when I was in the fourth grade, or something like that. Yep. Bloch is great. I have several tomes of his.

Zelazny -- never been able to get into him. Tried the Amber series for a while, didn't make it -- usually, however, that's due to new publication by King or Simmons (about the only reason I'll set aside a book, unless said book is total ASS).

Bradbury -- loved early stuff. The Fruit at the Bottom of the Bowl is one of my all time favorites. Got tired of Bradbury. Haven't gone back. Something Wicked This Way Comes, October Country -- some truly great stuff. "You won't always be older than me, Jack Nightshade!"

His 'Amber' series is A-Mazing!!! Also, his 'The Last Defender of Camelot' story kicks some serious ass.

Zelazny, I mean.
