Stephen King's Scary Proposal
Read now and pay later?
That's what spookmeister Stephen King is asking fans via a poll on his official Website (www.stephenking.com) as he considers posting another e-book online.
The writer, who admits he was "stunned" by the smashing success of Ride the Bullet, his first book to be published and made available only through the Internet, says he is "anxious" to try something similar.
So now, King is soliciting readers' thoughts on whether he should let people download 5,000-word installments of his unfinished episodic novel, The Plant, for free, and then have them send him a check or money order for one dollar later.
The Plant is about a "vampire vine" that takes over the offices of a publishing firm. The author says the story is already about 25,000 words long and there are no guarantees he'll finish it.
So far about 8,000 fans have weighed in with their opinions, with 94.5 percent saying King should make the book available online and 72 percent saying readers can be trusted to pay.
