Scored Film Soundtracks & Their Composers

I really enjoy listening to a good film soundtrack all by itself. I admit that I don't listen to them very often like i did when I was younger. But I still do sometimes. I do have a couple of friends who buy and listen to them A LOT.

There are lots of different kinds of film soundtracks. There are the Score soundtracks and I think those are the best. Generally, those are jammed with newly orchestrated instrumental music. You can see the film in your head when you hear these STs. these days, there are a lot of these that are now being created on synthesizers and even on a PC- now that techno/electronica music has its place in the music world. And then of course there is the Danny Elfman carnival music category which is admittedly ridiculously redundant sounding at this point.

Even though I love a lot of John Williams soundtracks and bits/pieces of what I hear in the theater during a film, i know that I am pretty ignorant when it comes to film soundtracks. I just don't buy them very often anymore. I would like to change that a little bit. So first, can any of you tell me maybe 3-5 (or more) soundtracks that really stand out for you. If you want to talk about the Superman, Star Wars and Indiana Jones STs- that is ine, but i just think that we all know how great those are. Let's discuss other ones. It doesn't matter if the music come from a blockbuster or an independent little arthouse flick.

In this thread, let's discuss Scores/classical based/orchestrated soundtracks like:

James Horner
John Williams
Jery Goldsmith
Angelo Badalamenteri

Talk about any that you like, but discussion about recent STs is even better. Thanks for any feedback.

Now this is something up my alley cause I've been collecting scores for years to aid me while I write.

So far, the only scores I've picked up this year are Hans Zimmer's Gladiator, Ennio Morricone's Mission to Mars, and the one to Battlefield Earth which actually is pretty decent if you take it on its own.

As far as classic favs, anything Goldsmith or Poledouris works for me especially if its action or genre related. I soured on Horner in the early 90's after The Rocketeer but I'll admit I'm starting to warm back up to his work after Zorro and The Perfect Storm. I stopped buying Williams once he hit his mature phase except for the two Jurassic Parks and Episode One.

I could go on forever about this topic...

Like a slew of other big budget event films of late, Mission Impossible 2 has 2 separate releases.

One is the "Music from or Inspired by" CD with the Metallica track and others. The second is the Hans Zimmer score album...

I (seriously) enjoy the soundtrack from Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story.

Soon to BE a CHUD topic.

There's a CD with all of John Carpenter's (good) themes on it. 'Halloween.'

Hey God...

There are a few horror theme CDs, but most are rerecordings and generally suck.

Better to burn your own on a CD-R like I did...

Sounds like a personal problem to me...

And Mission to Mars is good and along the lines of his work for The Thing. But I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a student of his and that M2M's is an aquired taste.
