I know what you are thinking. Poolhall Junkies? I never would have seen this if it wasn't for Harry's borderline insane review that went on and on about the merits of this particular film. I have been in the dumps lately and I felt like seeing a movie. This was showing at our local artsy theater which is a block from my house. About five minutes to showtime I figured "what the fuck" and I went to check it out. (thanks prala)
Damn good fucking movie. If was casting a movie tomorrow I would put Mars Callahan in a prominent role just like that. He may not be the best actor alive but he has goddam charisma coming out of his ass. The guy just shines on the screen. When he punched the lawyer and Walken said "oh, you crazy" I had the biggest shit eating grin on my face. You want this guy to succeed.
This film had a manic energy that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I don't give a shit about pool. I repeat: I don't give a shit about pool. Mars fucking sold me on the game like you wouldn't believe. I sat there like I was watching the greatest sport in the world. Watching the characters hustle each other was pure joy. I especially loved watching the restraint that Walken's character showed when he knew the kid was gonna make it.
I am not sure if anyone is going to have the chance to check this out. If you get a chance I heartily recomend it. This is a damn fine film and it got me smiling like crazy. Maybe I am just stupid, but I just love flicks ilke this that remind me why I love movies.
The late great Rod Steiger had my favorite line in the film.
"Everyday is a good day, kid. Just try missing one of them."
