Digital Cameras, anyone?

I think I'm going to take my birthday money and buy a digital camera.
You see, my regular camera fell down & went boom, and I wanted one anyways. Thing is, things have seriously changed since I last sold them 3 years ago at CompUSA.
Anyone have any (real)tips or suggestions? Links?
I'm looking in the sub $100 range.

Er, scratch that. sub $1000.

Ooooooh, um lemme try to get in touch with one of me pals, she goes away probably about 2-3 weeks out of every month for work, everywhere too, I think she's in Cali now. But because of this she bought a faboo Digi Cam, the kind with it's own floppy drive. We brought it on vacation and its great, you get about 25-30 pics per disc and just pop the sucker into your comp to save em to your hardrive. I think she used about 40 discs on vaca. It's all kinds of nifty little features like b/w, sepia tone, solarize (I think), etc.

I think it's a Sony but I'll clarify. It cost somewhere around $550 I believe.........

That would be a Sony Mavica. They're very good, and are in my "must check out list." Much nicer having a disk instead of flash memory (more expensive), but also drains batteries faster and is bulkier. Plus I wanna know how those compare to others in pic quality, since the major reason I'm getting this is raw materials for digital manipulation. (Example, the pic in my Works In Progress thread is obviously a a whole work taken...and I didn't take that pic, which means it can't be used commercially.)

Coyote, I've used the Sony Mavica and it is pretty SCHWEEEET! Unfortunately it's not mine, so I don't have it in front of me to give you the specs.

Grim: DO you know what model it was? Different models has different resolutions.

Hastur just asked me if she could get one for me for Christmas. She wants the DVD player NOW. A year ago, she thought Hi-Fi was something people did to greet each other.
So there may be a delay ;}

I have surmised, however, from your pics that:
1) Your father was irish.
2) Your computer speakers are mating and producing offspring.
3) It was not cold when you took those photos.
4) The Mavica can even capture true life behind TV images, a useful thing to have when trying to prove Ted Kopple is wanted by the MIB.
5) You either use a tape carousel as a nightstand for your pull-down bed, or that's an overgrown power-droid comming over to say Hi.
6) You own a G-string.
7) My efficiency apartment I shared with my ex, with all of our stuff...enough for 2 good sized apartments...crammed in there, still had more room that that place.

Hehehe, damn, I forgot to take that picture of me as Bruce Lee off of the server, oh well (that's of course if you took a look at hehehe.jpg...if you haven't, then don't, it will turn you blind)

The model number is MVC-FD85.

Coyote, I have a friend who is big into both electronics and photography. If I can actually get away from the job long enough to hang out with him this weekend, I'll ask him what he's using now as far as digital cameras go (he has at least two), and what he recommends.

Ok, aside from zdnet & cnet (the latter of which has a great chart for online shopping, updated twice daily and has business ratings), I found the mecca of research: http://www.imaging-resource.com/

I have, by this point, after much poking around in a camera store yesterday, pretty much decided on the Olympus C-3000. It's not a bloody box and can be operated by one hand, has a great interface and is among the top of the image quality, and it's a 3.3 megapixel for sub-800. (I'll have to buy an additional 16 or 32mg Smartcard, since some of the cost cutting is it only comes with an 8mg, but I'll just use the 8mg for a backup in case I run out of room. One of these days they'll design either a double bay for multiple cards, or a small compartment to store them. They're "wafer thin"...but what I REALLY want to see for these USB cameras is a small satchel for field use where you download the pics you're saving to the satchel, freeing up the card again. I'm really suprised I haven't seen one.) It's also USB and highly configerable. I'm never allowed to have nice toys.
Friend comes down from Dallas. Wants to go to Galveston Beach. So, I take her.
Halfway there, I lose a hell of alot of steering fluid.
To make a long day short, I appear to have a screwed up seal in the rack & pinion stearing system. Not a hose like we thought...15 bucks...more like 500, after labor.
I find out tomorrow after I take the van to the only shop open on Sundays....
I've noticed something....birthday money always seems to arrive just in time to be taken away by an emergency. Dunno if that's strange luck or not.
