Questions in Regards to Web Design and Hosting...

Alright, since several of the wonderful Chewers out there have lovely websites I figured I would ask of people here about Web Design and Hosting.

Alright, I am looking to start up a webpage, a place for me just to blog, post my writings, as well as anything else I may desire. Nothing graphic intensive but clean and professional enough to not be some 16 year old's website(though to be fair I have seen some made by 16 year olds that knocked my socks off)
Question is...what tools would I need to create the webpage how much of html will I have to learn and what programs would I need?

Also what are good places for hosting? I could easily spare some dough on it and figure it would be a good investment anyways.
Also is there any sites that you find are good examples of simple, professional, yet still hold their own style sites? I have browsed though many artist's web sites and have been thoroughly impressed but I don't think at this point I can manage such flair. wink

Anywho this would kinda be my second time jumping into a web site as originally I went the way of an Angelfire off shoot and used their own html editor so I didn't have to learn any html. Basically I cheated.

So if anyone can help I would apperciate it much.

Cheap hosting and domain names can be bought from godaddy.com , for one... there are other affordable ones, as well.

I use Photoshop for graphics editing and Homesite for HTML editing. I have a few years of experience with both, and I do the HTML by hand in most cases.

If you'd like a nice helping hand with the HTML, I would recommend Dreamweaver... but you should take the time to look at the code and see what's being done. Note, sometimes Dreamweaver puts in unnecessary stuff, but it's ok in general.

<a href="http://www.webmonkey.com" target="_blank">www.webmonkey.com</a> is a good place to learn what you need to know of HTML.

Have fun!

Use Dreamweaver (but it helps to buy a copy og HTML FOR DUMMIES) for coding.

Use Photoshop for designing graphics and layouts.

CT,

If you are unsure as to what you want for a domainname I can let you host your site on my server for free if you wish. I let Blofeld do that too. PM me if interested.

I'll think about Luwig but the stuff I'd put on there might make us uneasy business partners. wink

Best hosting you can go with: <a href="http://www.cyberpixels.com" target="_blank">http://www.cyberpixels.com</a>

Hosting is affordable, downtime is nigh-nonexistant. But it also features built in .cgi programs, like counters, banners, forums, and most importantly, Movable Type.

Hey CT...

My domains are hosted at <a href="http://www.hostica.com" target="_blank">http://www.hostica.com</a>

It's a cheap $5 a month, which gives enough space for a moderate sized site. My blogs are updated through <a href="http://www.blogger.com" target="_blank">http://www.blogger.com</a> which actually uses decent templates {I modified their generic crap} to update. It's very easy, and extremely fast to setup on all fronts. Sounds like you're wanting to just do something little, this way you can do some actual design, but have an easier way of adding and editing content.

Oh, and Blogger.com is free for as many blogs as you want to create.

Alright if I am starting out and wish to have a site that I won't run into bandwidth problems or run into space problems (let's say the site has a section for a blog, writings, links, reviews of whatever, news, and perhaps two or three other things) which one should I choose to get out of that Cyberpixels link?

I'm a noob at all this but don't want to get over my head.

Suggestions and rejections here please.

And where is a space to buy domain names?

The Neo package is perfect for a personal site (which is what I assume you'll be using.) If you'll look under the packaging prices, you'll see a "Domain Registration" button. Click it, fill in whatever.com and they'll take it from there for $9/yr, which is really, really nice.

damn, those rates at cyberpixels are crazy...are they good at that cost, sometimes hosting companies that are that cheap have problems, hell, even the big ones do too...anybody here have good experiences with them???

also to CT, the few websites that i've done, i've used photoshop or fireworks for the graphics and dreamweaver for the HTML...i know a little about the code, but not enough to do something without dreamweaver, plus dreamweaver has a BIG following, so you can find lots of extensions to help you do pretty much anything with it in terms of Dynamic HTML or CSS...

see <a href="http://www.macromedia.com" target="_blank">macromedia</a> or <a href="http://www.projectseven.com" target="_blank">Project 7</a> to see some awesome things they do with the macromedia products...

Cyberpixel has 99.9% uptime, and I've seen nothing that refutes it so far. Plus their control panel is great for beginners.

wow, that's pretty good, thanks
