Early Oscar picks

Hey everyone!

I know the nominations don't come until February 12, but I thought I'd jump the gun and see what everyone thinks should win. Nothing technical...just the big ones.

Best Picture -

Best Actor -

Best Actress -

Best Supporting Actor -

Best Supporting Actress -

Best Director -

Best Adapted Screenplay -

Best Original Screenplay -

Best Animated Film -

Best Foreign Film -

I have chosen not to vote, since there are still several flicks I would like to see before the noms arrive that are getting buzz and other big awards from films societies and such.

I can see LOTR winning Best Picture so the Academy can feel hip again. I personally think it should be "Moulin Rouge", but there's little chance.

I see Russell Crowe winning Best Actor and I must begrudgingly admit that it is deserved. Denzel has long been my favorite, but even his dynamic performance is not as textured and complex as Crowe. Gene Hackman could get the elderly award, and I'd be okay with it as well. To me its those three.

Best Actress should be Nicole Kidman. Two good films and two good performances. Her personal life could help her chances as well.

Best Supporting Actor could be hard, because it depends where everyone falls. Uf Hackman gets in this category, he wins. I think there is a lack of a real leader this year for this category. Benicio made it easy last year. I myself thought Ed Harris was brilliant in "A Beautiful Mind". But I see this being an indie win this year. Either Kingsley for "Sexy Beast" or a dark horse.

Jennifer Connelly should win Best Supporting Actress.

Best Director is hard for me. Both Baz Luhrman and Peter Jackson are equally deserving in many ways. But in the end, I think everyone will give Jackson his due.

Does winning the award in a previous year preclude a film from consideration?

Amores Perros, which was also good, might snag it.
Amores Perros won Foreign last year.

Crouching Tiger won last year, but Perros was nominated.
My bad! I was daydreaming.

Even though the reviews seem to be mixed (it's at about 67% on Rotten Tomatoes right now), anybody else get this feeling that Black Hawk Down might ride some kind of patriotic wave into the Oscars?
Yeah, but I'll keep my fingers crossed that "LOTR" will get it.
