Okay, I know there are some film journalists on these boards (marvel at my reporting skills) and I really need your help. Let me explain my situation.
I'm a film student at Oberlin College (it's a small liberal arts school about 30 miles outside of Cleveland. Alumni include William Goldman and Julie Taymor...allow me a moment to pick up those names I dropped). I'm trying to start a film organization that's fairly in depth and with a website. I want to write film reviews for the site. Well, I know that to write reviews for unreleased material (whether it be regular release or DVD) I need press credentials. So my first question is how do I get press credentials? And I would gladly find out this information myself, but I don't even know where to start (jokers, please don't say "the library" because I was in there for over an hour and still couldn't find out where to start).
I know that I could write reviews for films already in release, but I want to start setting up relationships with studios and possibly get films screened here. Oberlin's cinema studies program is quickly developing and I'm trying to ride this wave.
Believe me, I'm not in this for free movies. I know there's a problem in the area of film journalism as so clearly illustrated in Nick's Piss and Vinegar #5 but I am no "shortcutter". I'm just a college student trying to make an honest start in film journalism. The only problem is I don't know where to start.
There are some great writers on this site and I know that the thought of helping some punk-ass college student doesn't seem too appealing, but I'm begging for some help here. Any information concerning the field of film journalism would be more helpful than you know.
Thank you for your time and my apologies if this isn't in the right forum.
