Alleged videotaped rape of teen jolts suburb

January 11, 2003

BY FRANK MAIN CRIME REPORTER

A teenage "chugging contest" in an upscale home near Burr Ridge turned into rape when a 16-year-old girl passed out and four young men performed sex acts on her--and scrawled offensive words on her body with a marker--while they videotaped their crimes, a Cook County prosecutor said Friday.

The 20-minute videotape is in the hands of prosecutors, and they also have obtained written statements from the four defendants implicating themselves in the attack, said Peter Troy, supervisor of the Cook County state's attorney's office in Bridgeview.

"We believe there were other people who turned the other way while this was going on," said Troy, who wouldn't rule out additional charges. "This is absolutely disgusting."

On Friday, prosecutors asked Judge David P. Sterba to raise the bail for the four defendants, Adrian Missbrenner, 17, of Lyons Township; Burim Bezeri, 17, of Lyons; Christopher Robbins, 18, of Brookfield, and Sonny Smith, 18, of Brookfield. Sterba said he would consider the request.

The four were arrested on Dec. 12, and another judge set bail at $100,000 each. Their families posted their bail, and they have been free since then. Troy said prosecutors are seeking higher bail based on additional evidence police have collected since the arrests.

At least one of the defendants, Smith, is a senior at Lyons Township High School North, said his attorney, Adam D. Grosch, who said his client denies the allegations. Grosch said he has not seen any of the evidence in the case.

"He is still attending school, and as far as I know, they have not taken any action there because these are just allegations at this point," Grosch said.

The principal of the high school did not return a call seeking comment Friday.

Patrick M. Campanelli, attorney for Missbrenner, said, "We are denying every allegation the state is making," but refused to make additional remarks.

The attack allegedly happened Dec. 7 after the 16-year-old Naperville girl arrived around 2:30 a.m. at Missbrenner's home on the 8300 block of County Line Road outside Burr Ridge, said Penny Mateck, a spokeswoman for the Cook County sheriff's office. As many as eight teens were in the home at a party where they were consuming alcohol, authorities said.

The Naperville girl, who had been drinking, lost consciousness and was taken to a guest bedroom across a hallway from Missbrenner's room, Troy said.

"During the time she was passed out, the four individuals decided to have some fun and games with her," he said.

They videotaped themselves raping the girl, performing oral sex on her, drawing demeaning language on her body with a marker and inserting a cigarette into her vagina, Troy said.

Mateck said the "understanding of the victim" was that Missbrenner's parents were home, but prosecutors said that was under investigation. Campanelli would not comment on where they were.

The 16-year-old girl woke up about 1 p.m. on Dec. 7 in Missbrenner's home, Mateck said. One of her parents took her to a hospital in DuPage County. The DuPage County sheriff's office was contacted but turned the case over to Cook County officials because the Missbrenner home is in Cook County.

Authorities recovered the videotape from a friend of one of the defendants, Troy said. Cook County sheriff's police searched Missbrenner's home on Dec. 30 and recovered what they believe was the camera used on Dec. 7, as well as a television set on which the tape was played and a video player, Troy said. Police also seized a mattress and bed linens.

The defendants are expected to submit DNA evidence, Troy said.

Each of the defendants faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted on charges that include aggravated sexual assault and child pornography, Troy said. Their next court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in Bridgeview.

Nelson, this is quite an interesting article. I don't know why I have not responded to this earlier. I work in an low socioeconomic area. I started thinking about the boys that committed this crime after reading the article. It wasn't right, and they should be punished for this. I have seen so many kids that come from homes, and their parents do not care what they do, how they dress, whether they have any breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and even do illegal drugs in front of their kids. Is there any justification for what these boys did? NO, there isn't. I think that some kids go the wrong route, because they do not have anyone that cares about them. I think parents should love their children, teach them respect, and make sure their kids are meeting "Mazlow's Hierarchy of Needs". I think if all parents could give their children the psysiological needs, the safety need, the love needs, teach them to have self-esteem, give them understanding, and help them with their asethetic qualities, children would be much better. Unfortunately, a lot of the problems kids have starts right at home.

Bless the children of this world.

Rape is not about sex, it's about power.

If the parents of these assholes were going to teach them respect, they'd have left them in jail and not posted bail at 100 g's each.

I'm against the death penalty, but when I look at rape, I question that position. For some reason, rape sickens me even more than murder. I also think it's a crime that the legal system likes to ignore and create so many loopholes that defendants hardly ever serve time for their crimes.

Rapists ARE the scum of the earth, only lower are rapists who get away with it.

fyi, if one lives in lyons, cicero, berwyn, or the brookfield-LaGrange area, one is not really rich, just enough to get by.

back to topic, yes, fuck those kids!

being able to post 100,000 bond isn't chump change.

I hope these guys are sent to the prison and end up with a Vern Schillinger for a cellmate.

Why did these people's parents post the 100K dollar bail? Youd think that parents would be smarter then to just get them out of jail so fast. These people deserve to rot in jail for awhile.

Kind of parents who post $100K bail are the kinds of parents who wouldn't let their precious babies spend one minute in a filthy jail cell. I go to a school with these kinds of kids - I know the type.

How many of you that are questioning why the parents posted bail are *actually parents*?

If they did this deed then yes, to hell with them.

But as a parent, your love for your child is unconditional. You don't let your kids stay in jail, no matter what they have done. Not if you can help it.

They'll be in a real prison soon enough and out of their parents reach. For a long, long time.

See here's the difference.

If they were real parents they would've taught their kids the differences between right and wrong, between going with the crowd and standing up for yourself. How much you want to bet that at least a couple of them went along with it to show off to the other, cooler, kids.

Yeah, maybe the parents were there for them, but it seems doubtful. And either way, if one of those were my kids, and I heard this shit, he'd be disowned. No question about it, I could love the guy, but i'd never forgive him for doing something like this. Staying in jail might be the lesson that these guys need.

Rapists are lower than murderers in my opinion. I can see a reason to kill someone, like self defense, but there's no justification in rape. I hope these kids get taken down.

I find the "rape is worse than murder" line of thought a little questionable.

Yes, it's a horrid crime that is utterly disgusting.

But it's worse than snuffing out an innocent life? I really have to disagree.

And I'll stand by my assertion that most parents would do what these parents did in bailing them out.
Innocent life? The chick who was raped is the only innocent. Fuck these kids and their wonderful attentive parents.
I don't think Call was saying these guys were innocent. He was saying that someone who rapes an innocent is certainly not worse than someone who murders an innocent. Rape, while horrible, is something from which one can recover, though with great difficulty. There aren't any murder crisis centers. There's no shot at recovery.

And Call's right about parents' motivations. If it was your kid who was charged, there's no doubt that a sense of denial would kick in as you tried to concoct a defense for the act in your mind ("it wasn't what it looked like," "she was asking for it," etc.).

Parents don't want to believe their children capable of something like this, or at least believe them capable of being redeemed and rehabilitated somehow. It's surprising how logic can be tweaked in the interest of emotion.

I think what does make rape worse than murder is, as previously mentioned, rape is very much ignored in the justice system. So is sexual harrassement for that case. Overseas, if something like this would have happened, the whole familly of the girl would have gotten together to kill all those boys and their famillies for doing sick stuff like this. While I don't agree with very much that goes on overseas, this is one action I'd have to side with.

And about the whole parent issue: no parent can admit that their child is wrong. That's why the parents aren't letting their kids in jail, no matter how short term the stay might be. Heck, I've noticed a trend today where nobody can admit they are wrong anymore. From dumb-ass drivers, to fellow students that would mooch off of me (and I got him kicked out of a group), people everywhere just can't understand the fact that they can screw up, and that when they do, they should be punished. Everyone has come along with the attitude that they are right all the time, and when they commit wrong, it's just a minor thing that should be ignored, and that's how they treat it.

Do you think these boys went back home, and realized the terrible act they did? That they are now suffering from guilt at their sickening crime? Not at all. They're probably all at home, playing video games, and laughing the whole time because they're not going to school right now. Today's parents, for a very large majority, have completely lost any sense of responsibility for their children. Kid's can get away with anything at home, so why not on the street as well? But because the parents have not really had a large part in the child's development once the child hits a certain age, they are completely surprised by the actions that this older kid can now perform. They still remember the young tyke that could barely walk around the house, and then it was the tv, the computer, ect., taking care of the kid's development.

Both my parents are teachers, and they often tell me stories about really bad kids at their school, and the parents that just don't care, and won't believe that their kid is indeed a trouble maker. It is a sad fact of life, and one that sadly doesn't seem like it's going to disappear anytime soon.
