| According to new census estimates released Wednesday, Latino communities across the nation mushroomed nearly 10 percent in the two years between the April 2000 census and July 2002. The nation as a whole grew about 2.5 percent, the data show. For the first time, census officials have confirmed what many demographers have declared for years: Nearly 39 million strong, Latinos now are the nation's largest group of people of color... The national numbers show that, as of last July, there were about 35 million African-Americans, 11 million Asian-Americans and 197 million whites in the country. The Latino growth was driven mostly by immigration, census officials said. |
