Census: Group now numbers 39 million</a>

According to new census estimates released Wednesday, Latino communities across the nation mushroomed nearly 10 percent in the two years between the April 2000 census and July 2002. The nation as a whole grew about 2.5 percent, the data show.

For the first time, census officials have confirmed what many demographers have declared for years: Nearly 39 million strong, Latinos now are the nation's largest group of people of color...

The national numbers show that, as of last July, there were about 35 million African-Americans, 11 million Asian-Americans and 197 million whites in the country.

The Latino growth was driven mostly by immigration, census officials said.

Yup and if I am right whites in Los Angeles are now a minority. Incredible how much the population shot up though in such a small amount of time. I see the Asian population also grew some.

Gonna be interesting how certain entities react to the news.

I see half of them standing in line at the SunTrust Bank in my local grocery store every Friday.

The Hispanic population in my area has definitely shot up. That's cool because as much as I like Mexican food, that means we get some really authentic stuff in the stores adn restaurants (purely selfish I know).

Seriously though, we've been the majority in Miami for as long as I can remember. It's amazing how you can live, work, socialize, and live a perfectly active & fruitful life here without speaking a single word of English.

Also, because of the sheer number of dining options, the price/quality ratio of Cuban food down here is fantastic. The little cafeteria down the corner serves food that's equal or better than the luxury restaurants, but at 1/3 the price. Nothing beats Cuban coffee either.
