I was visiting my mom's house in Sherman Texas and this thing ran across my cousin's feet. It looked like a frog (it was dark outside) but she said it was a furry spider, so I chased it down and caught it. We took some pics of it then released it. It was very gentle

*Cancelling any future Texas visits.*

When you say you caught it, did you actually grab it?

Tarantulas are sooo cute! They're furry and cuddly and - I think I'll quit while I'm ahead.

Jesus christ Mrs M!

While I'd still take my chances to come see you even with a spider like that... jeez.

My brother almost sat down on one in Folsom, CA when we were kids.

I still remember how damned hilarious it was to see his ass running away! Stupid bastard...

But here's the interesting part--ever since Shelby bit it, it has had the strength and abilities of an internet porn junkie!

Those things creep the shit out of me.

I used to catch California Burrowing Wolf spiders when I was a kid in Colorado. They used to live in holes in the ground near my house and a nice cup of water down the hole would bring them running out. Not quite as big as tarantulas, but they about fairly large. Anyway, I used to hold them in my bare hands, after I caught them and they had calmed down(if spiders have a calm state). They would jump pretty well too, it was cool. Then I saw 'Arachnophobia'(IIRC, they used burrowing wolf spiders in the production of that movie) and all my fun memories of my spiders turned into nightmares.

So, while I don't have a real fear of spiders, I certainly won't be handling any large spiders in the near future.

Nice pics, by the way, Shelby.

Did you say "hi" to your mom while you visited her house?

Is that a barking spider? I've never had any luck catching those.

Shelby, I do love you - dearly, even - but you and this spider thing you keep me doing drives me positively batty.

OH MY GOOD GOD! I bet you that's actual size.

Tarantulas do not have the venom to kill you. It might give you a little pain, and give you a cold, but kill you? Nope.
Like Shelby said, Tarantulas are actually very gentle. They may appear large and scary, but they're very docile and soft and hairy. You guys should give them a chance! Don't be a bunch of arachnophobes!

I hear those all the time but I've never actually seen one. What's up with that?

Did that thing escape from the 8 Legged Freaks set? It looks really cool. How big is it?

Dude, do these "barking spiders" have tails and fetch slippers? If so, I think we need to talk.

It was about the size of my palm when it was kinda curled up, but about the size of my hand when it's legs were out.

It was also really cool to see it go into defense mode because it had it's abdomen straight up in the air along with a couple of back legs. It was trying very hard to look intimidating and it pretty much worked

Haha, no! I'm too much of a pussy for that. I kind of used my hand to scoot it into the container, but that's as close as I got. I really REALLY wanted to take a picture of it on my hand but I chickened out when my BF told me not to worry because its sting (bite?) feels like a bumblebee sting. Later after taking the pictures we looked online for some info and found out that what we had was a female and they are usually very docile and are the ones that make good pets.

Now my BF is sad that we released it and said when I get back from vacation expect to have a new 'pet' in the house.

Look what I have started!

Long long dark hair, white white skin, brooding goth-look, now likes big hairy spiders...

Who here just doesn't love Mistress Shelby?

Actually, what you really need to worry about is them shooting the bristly hairs off of their abdomen. When she raised hers up like that, she was probably preparing to unleash a barrage of hairs, which will irritate the hell out of your skin. It feels like nettles.

Yowza! If that is a tarantula, I've only seen a live one, up close, once. I had neighbors that kept one as a pet in an aquarium. They asked me if I'd like to see them feed it a mouse. I was like, nooooooo thanks.

Congrats?

The hairs can also cause serious respiratory problems.
