What's up with Undeclared, and why TV sucks.

Just gonna post a link to a couple articles in today's New Times. The first one deals with Undeclared, and folks, it don't look to good.

Then, looks like the writer got fired up and went on to expand on some of the ideas and apply them to what's going on in TV in general.

Interesting stuff. Let's hear what y'all think.

The second one is a very interesting article - quite a few things I'd never thought of before - but I think the only solution to this problem is to stop watching TV. This will either force them to re-evaluate the shows they're running and make better ones or TV will become so mindless that no one will watch it anymore and people will start reading again...or if they can't read, raping and pillaging, I guess.

So besides the obvious suckiness of regular network television what seems to be the problem? Is it that whole anti-corporate buggaboo again?

For one thing, I don't quite get why it's such a big problem for the networks to actually own the shows they broadcast. Why is that such a bad thing?

Well, you know Fox really needs the air time to run more episodes of Bernie Mac. I swear it feels like that show is on every twenty minutes.
Yea but that show is funny.

Its just sad to see shows like the above mentioned leaving and shows like Glutton Bowl coming on! Ugh. I mean what the fuck? If I wanna see people eat gross stuff until they nearly puke Ill just watch Fear Factor (what the Glutton bowl semi rips off IMO).

But hey, I'm just your average TV viewer so what the hell do I know...

Fox needs to remember back when all they had was Tracy Ulman and Werewolf and give some of these shows a chance to build an audience.

The point is, they don't really care if it builds an audience, because they can make more money with a show they own, especially if the show consists of a guy hitting himself in the head with a hammer or some shit, and costs $.30 an episode to produce.

But it is their network to do with as they please. I don't know. I guess I disagree with Government having any hand in who can own what.

If CBS is going to be stupid about keeping/firing producers and writers I suppose it's their perogative.

If the issue was "Well, Undeclared, Futurama and The Tick just aren't getting the ratings", then I'd sort of agree. But if it's shit like "We don't own those shows, so why should we bother?", then I really have to question it. These are decisions coming not even from network programmers, but apparantly from profit-only-minded execs of the parent companies.

I do take these articles with a grain of salt--I say the quality of TV has improved greatly over the past decade--but if you look at this as a trend that will be getting even worse in the future, it don't look good.

The quality of TV has gone in two totally separate directions...

First you have good shows such as 24, The Sopranos, Emeril: Live!, Nova, even The Left Wing gets a nod as being pretty well done. (random examples)

Then you have the opposite end of the spectrum...the place that makes much more money than we all want to admit...your Springers, your Millionaires, your Weakest Links, etc.

And a hundred shows somewhere between these extremes. No, TV has gotten richer, TV has gotten more technically sophisticated, TV has gotten bigger. But better or worse? It depends which end of the spectrum you haunt.

It's a strange business.

One issue is just a matter of artistic control, it seems. If The Suits had taste and balls, it would make no difference at all.

But consider what would happen if GE's reactors weren't as safe as they promised. GE owns NBC. Do you think you'd get an honest report about how dangerous GE's reactors are on NBC news?
That's why there's FOX News! I haven't taken an NBC News report seriously for over nine years.

Does anyone have the link to the Undeclared petition? I don't want to see this series go!

Anytime I see something screech across a room and latch onto someone's neck, and the guy screams and tries to get it off, I have to laugh, because what is that thing?!.

So "Grounded For Life" was given the go ahead for a full season, while "Undeclared" gets yanked after 17 episodes? WTF?

That's why there's HBO...cause they are not scared of anything and the shows are better for it

Sopranos
Oz
Sex and the City
Six Feet Under
Curb Your Enthusiam
Mr. Show with Bob & David

One BIG mistake
