The Grammy's

Is anyone watching? Nothing spectacular has happened yet. U2 was amazing as always. A almost naked Jon Stewart was frightening. The Moulin Rouge gals performed "Lady Marmalade" with Patti Labelle which was cool, but I thought they sang it last year as well. What's up with that? Tony Bennet and Billy Joel are performing right now. I can't believe how bald Billy has gotten. Alicia Keyes seems to be the "It" girl. And what's up with CBS using actors from their sows, like Ray Ramano, to announce winners. What do they have to do with the music biz?

I just hope Doctor Ruth wins in the Spoken Word category. Then life will be complete.

Greatest Jon Stewart line of the night:

"In Afghanistan, they were ruled by a totalitarian regime, and once they were liberated, the first thing that happened was music was played on the streets..."

"And three days later, even they were sick of Creed."

Did anyone catch the whole "The Internet is Robbing Young Talent of it's Chance to SHine" spiel? They zoomed in on two Asian kids in the audience and said that "Our people downloaded over 6,000 different songs in a two day period" or something to that effect, then he spit out some crazy figure like "2.7 billion songs are downloaded/exchanged every month". Meh. What a stupid awards show.

Holy fudge, did they really win? I can't say I watched much of the show, but I did see some of it.

At least Outkast got some awards.

Does it get any better than "You Stink, But I Love You"? I think not.

Ex-Destiny's Child Members Sue

The Associated Press
Friday, March 1, 2002; 3:09 AM

HOUSTON –– Two former Destiny's Child members filed a federal lawsuit against the group, contending the hit song "Survivor" made derisive comments about them.

"Survivor" won a Grammy for R&B performance by a duo or group on Wednesday night.

LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson contend the song is in violation of a previous settlement, which precludes either party from making "any public comment of a disparaging nature concerning one another."

A line in the song, quoted in the lawsuit filed in a Houston federal court Wednesday, states: "You thought I wouldn't sell without you, sold 9 million."

Tom Fulkerson, an attorney for Destiny's Child, called the lawsuit "ridiculous."

"It's unfortunate that the plaintiffs have nothing better to do with their time than to dream up new lawsuits to file," Fulkerson said in Thursday's editions of the Houston Chronicle. "We made a settlement agreement that we knew put things to bed, yet here we are again."

At the time of the earlier settlement, there were four members in the group, including Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, Farrah Franklin and Michelle Williams. Franklin is no longer a member.

Luckett and Roberson now accuse Knowles, Rowland and Williams of making "deliberate disparaging, defamatory factual misrepresentations" in public comments to the press and with the group's spring 2001 release of "Survivor."

"We would like a restraining order and an injunction to prevent further comment that would violate the agreement and any further performance of that song," said Warren M. Fitzgerald Jr., an attorney for Luckett and Roberson.

Luckett and Roberson, who live in Atlanta and continue to pursue a musical career, are also suing the group's music label, Sony Music, and are seeking unspecified damages for breach of contract, defamation, libel and fraud.

Holy crap. I just read Kurt Loder's review of the Grammy's and was brought to my knees, howling with laughter after reading what he said about Nelly Furtado. The quote where she thanks her record company for "recognizing artistic integrity" was funny enough. But Loder's comment about Furtado hopefully joining Paula Cole in semi-retirement was priceless. Great piece. I'd almost forgotten that underneath that emotionless, android exterior, Kurt's actually got something vaguely resembling a sense of humor.

Then again, he also wrote this:

But there was more than the usual allotment of good stuff, too. Train were good, nice cello-player on the side.

Here is the link to the article, if anyone is interested.

Yeah, I know. Loder's musical taste can be a bit baffling at times, to say the least. Like when I got an advance copy of that godawful pop/metal CD from that well endowed Goth babe, Lennon. There's a quote inside the cover from Loder where he goes on about how Lennon "kicks ass," and basically makes her out to be the scantily clad savior of hard rock. It made me wonder if he was basing his remarks on the music or the chubby-inducing album cover.

Can anyone tell me the difference between best record and best album? Aren't they the same thing?

I think best record means best single.

But wouldn't that be best song?
