In one of the oddest promotional appearances ever before the TV Writers Summer Tour, Edward James Olmos, who is starring in a new Battlestar Galactica miniseries due to air on the Sci-Fi Channel, gave this advice to fans of the original Galactica series, which aired on ABC between 1978 and 1980: "Please don't watch this program," Olmos said. "Buy yourself the new DVDs that they're putting out of the old episodes, and whenever we come on, just put that one in. ... Trust me. Don't watch it. If you're a real, real staunch Battlestar Galactica person, please don't watch it."
Should Lucas have given the same advice to avid Star Wars fanatics before the release of TPM?

Damn you, Olmos!

Need confirmation on the respective stances of messrs Benedict and Hatch.

So the show's that good, is it?

I think Olmos wants to avoid having Galactica fanboys waddling up to him in public and-breath smelling of Cool Ranch Doritos and Diet Slice-bitching him out for the sin of tampering with the sacred text (if so, maybe he should have thought of that before he took the part).

Still, I have a positive attitude about this project. Ruining Battlestar: Galactica would be like liquefying pudding; it's irreducibly crappy. Almost anything the producers attempt will be a huge improvement.

Uhhh...for television Battlestar Galactica was state-of-the-fucking-art at the time. John Dykstra was the effects guru on the thing for God's sake!

No, this new series cannot improve nor take away from the original. Because for the most part it simply shares the title.

I'll watch just to pick it apart...then promptly forget it even happened.

...And his FX for the show were (and still are) pretty swell (they had to be, since TV budgets demanded they get a heavy workout as stock footage). Pretty much everything else around them, though, was stupid and dire (well, John Colicos was always pretty cool).

The idea, I thought, was great and the first few episodes, while being indelibly cheesy, were top notch. There was also some good stories told, although I don't think Larson's writing was up to it. That said, my favourite episode was one from the abomination Galactica 1980, an Enemy Mine-ish episode where Starbuck was stuck on a remote planet with a Cylon. A really good episode, as I remember it.

He's telling people that if they're expecting this to be an exact remake of the original show, they're going to be disappointed. He's not commenting on the quality of the new show.
