The New X-MEN Cartoon.

Thread Starter
Sean spent the night last night and wanted to be up at 10 to see the new X-MEN cartoon.

So we saw it.

FUCKED.

I'm sure some of you still catch Saturday moning cartoons from time to time but after a long respite from them, I am appalled.

The commercials OFFEND me. The most manipulative, poorly made, and packed with hideous CGI crap I've ever injested.

Pokemon, Digimon, and anything else that ends in mon (yeah, fuck you too Bob Marley) needs to leave.

Otherwise I have no opinion.

Actually, it's not bad. X-MEN Evolution has promise (remember, it's a pilot. By rule, pilots suck.). The animation is top notch (even if the faces look a tad too cute on the guys, especially Nightcrawler). They're too young & ideolistic, taking some of the dark UMPH out of the show, but that may change. In the early issues (the 90's...not the decade, it ish numbers) most of them WERE teenagers, although I think it was more like 18 than 15, with the exception of Kitty.

But here's where it's obvious, even if liberties were taken, that the creaters were fans:
*Logan is the right age. He's not young. He looks right (can't tell his height from the first ep, but his civies look perfect). He says "Bub" in his first line. He's not used much at all, yet.
*Nightcrawler has the right (if overblown & a tad cute) accent. He has the right number of fingers. He bamfs. They pronounce his last name correctly. Hell, he's in it.
*They mention the SR-71 when talking about the SR-77.
*The danger room.
*Rogue & Shadowcat look like they're going to be DEAD on (they didn't appear yet)
*All the costumes look right.
*Storm is RIGHT. Accent, costume, age, attitude.

The bads:
*THEY GAVE NIGHTCRAWLER A HOLOGRAPHIC DISGUISE. Ugh. Part of the magic of the character is his looks, and how it makes him an outcast.
*Nightcrawler has parents that Xavier knows?
*Too many "X" references in names. X-Gene. Code level X. Priority X. Penguin Zoo Keeper Grade X. Is there an X-Rated theater in the mansion?
*Dialogue is...passable. It's the first ep.
*Logic occasionally gets tossed out the window. Why would the Danger Room kick into lethal mode when a stranger goes in?
*They gave Nightcrawler a holographic disguise. Sorry, that need to be mentioned twice. It's the only thing that actually annoyed me. Even his resemblance to a certain veiw askew character who sings BERzerKER didn't bother me...it's not the Kurt we knew, but you make him younger and bring him to America, and I could see it.
*Darth Magneto. Ok, it's a fun effect, but I hope the character becomes more 3dimensional later, like the comic & film.

Over-all, I'd say the show definately has potential, if they don't nerf it. They need to darken it slightly, and put it next to Batman Beyond (which has been moved once again to the early bird slot) instead of Pokemon & Static Shock. The WB has a habbit of programing with split personalities. It's like if Fox had put X-Files, Judge Judy, Sex & The City, The Smurfs, and Buffy back to back.

I'd still rather have a live-action series, but we have a few more years before it could reasonably be pulled off without the budget causing it to be cancled (it wouldn't have the ratings it needed, early enough, with the budget it would need).

I didn't know it was coming on today...

Just so ya know, in the comics, Nightcrawler had a holographic thingy. No complaints for continuity, there.

I found that out tonight. I must have selectively removed it from memory...evidently, it didn't last too long, hovering around the high 90's, low 100's.

Sat Mornings, yesterday at 9:30CST, but the WB will probably change it. They move everything around more than B5 in syndication on a UPN channael.

I thought this current "vision" of the X-Men is pretty good. The animation was not spectacular, but did have a certain energy to it. Plus, the voice acting was much, much better than the past Fox cartoon. I still cringe when I hear Gambit or Storm and their stereotype voices. Although, Wolverine's voice still seemed a bit off. At least he looked the part...

Now, I think the WB needs to bring back the original X-Men cartoon. Anybody remeber that? It had the same animation as G I Joe and a plot as bad as any of the current Claremont attempts. And the lyrics:

"X-Men, X-Men, saves the day, saves the day. X-Men X-Men, coming your way! Magneto's hoardes are on their way to pillage, burn and plunder. But there's one team that will not yield, the team that strikes like thunder!"

I think those are right. I'm scared that I remember those after all these years. I would be even more frightened if those weren't the words and I just had a subconcious construction of them.

The animation was top-notch for saturday morning weekly episodic american telly.
It's followed by Static Shock. Compare the two. ugh.

I still don't think this is a bad cartoon. I am starting to dig it. Although......what is the matter with Sabretooth? He picked up a friggin' car! Is he some type of Hulk-like creature now? I thought they were going to play him more like the comic book, a darker, cunning character. In the first ep., he seemed to be stalking the characters. Now, he seems a bit to brutish. And the costume still doesn't work. What is it, hobo-chic? end complaints...

Still, this is good stuff as compared to the usual Saturday fare. Only Batman Beyond surpasses it. Of course, these are the only two things I currently watch, if I get the time.

yeah Confessor, i actually have a copy of that X-Men pilot around somewhere -- "Pryde of the X-Men". Magneto headed up the "Brotherhood of Mutant Terrorists"... none too subtle there. for some reason Wolverine had an Australian accent

anyway, i caught the second episode of Evolution, thought it was decent. theyre not in a hurry to get into the action, building up the characters instead, which is nice to see.

And I still ain't seen this thing yet...

They're starting a few of them out younger than normal, but they did do a decent job of making them THEMSELVES, only at a different age.
Kitty didn't sound like a val to me....

You're right. Better catch those MST3k eps on the first run, you never know when they'll air again.
