Firefly - Page 2

Officially on Hiatus as Fastlane is being moved into it's time slot on Friday in January.

Supposedly will be rescheduled into a new time slot. I'm hopeful but not holding my breath.

There's no worry about me watching Fox on Friday night now.

Sounds like Fox actually recognizes it's a good show that needs a better home and promotion... I was lamost hopeful when I read it. If you like Firefly, get people to watch in December, they're looking to the ratings then to decide it's future... crap... how good is the pilot going to do on the Friday before Christmas???

Just a reminder to watch tonight. The new episode sounds great. I have forgotten and missed the last two new eps.

No my fav quote was Book to Simon. Something like:

Simon: "I never shot a man before."
Book: "I was there son. I don't think you have yet."

I want the exact quote!

The episode had been so tense with everything that was going on that I just died laughing at that point. And kept chuckling afterwards.

Allow me to perform a little necromancy on this thread.

After hearing so many good things, I finally Netflixed this show, having never seen it. Watch all episodes and the movie.

Consider me a convert. What a great collection of characters - so sorry there won't be any more. I'm more convinced than ever that the Avengers are in good hands.

One nitpick - The Reavers. The crazy/scary villains from a few episodes and the film. If they're so 'eat-your-face-and-rape-your-corpse' insane, how do they pilot and maintain their ships? Doesn't that require a certain amount of concentration and expertise?

But w/e - it was a great show that died before its time, and I'm obviously the very first person on the internet to make that observation.

Man, this ol' "Firefly In Real Time" thread sure is an emotional rollercoaster.

Now the dust has settled I'm okay with how Firefly ended up. It's a crime that it never had time to truly breathe, especially seeing as it took several episodes to really get going, but the show and the movie combined feel like a satisfying mini-series with a beginning, middle and end that you can plow through in a couple of weeks. I don't think the movie is that amazing but it's very satisfying just to have something approaching closure on the whole thing.

I'd kill for Deadwood to have something similar. I swear my soul cannot rest until that show gets some kind of ending.

Yeah, the fact we got a film to try and tie things up was a good thing.  Great little series all in all but in hindsight I wonder how many seasons it could have maintained.

I don't think it would've had any trouble going for a long stretch. It was a big, rich world for them to play around in, and Whedon's shows are almost always really well structured on a macro-level.

The real shame is that Whedon's other shows all had pretty shitty first seasons, then became really, really great after that. Serenity was great right off the bat, but we never got to see those later seasons. I've watched through the series several times, and ever time I end up sad that we didn't get to spend more time with these characters. The only other show that I really feel the same way about is Terriers.

Didn't Joss say his original plan was for the arc which resolved in the movie to be developed over three seasons? Or did I dream that?

Because that would have been perfect.

Yeah, it was cancelled too soon. With a lot of shows--Arrested Development and such--it feels like the cancellation was a blessing, helping them bow out while they were still on top. With Firefly it was clear Whedon had a long-form plan, which is something he does very, very well (and which so many other genre shows don't). Having it end abruptly in mid-first-season is a crying shame, and while it's nice that the movie provides closure, there was clearly a LOT more they wanted to say. Among other things, Whedon obviously wanted to explore the pros and cons of libertarianism, statism, anarchy, totalitarianism, and all the various nuances in between. I believe he's said that he doesn't agree with Mal, politically, and that he wanted to explore that in more depth. But the truncated space means that the conflict was largely reduced to the EEEEEEVIL Alliance vs. the heroic punk-rock space cowboys of freedom, which is fun but not very substantial. Ironically, the only episode that tackles these themes in a challenging way, that makes a case for the Alliance being something beyond simple villains, is The Train Job, which is arguably the worst episode of the series. So yeah--even a full season would have helped to scratch the itch.

Also, I'm still dying to know what was up with the Blue Hand Group and Book's backstory (yeah, I know there's a comic, I've heard it's pretty bleah and I don't want to taint the show by reading it).
