VIDEO GAME DRAFT, Round 1 Discussion - Page 2

Damn, Donkey Kong Country didn't last long. Was sure that would have still been around for my 2nd or 3rd draft pick.
Nice pick by Dennis, although the control scheme still brings white-hot hate from my fingertips.

And for myself, a choice that should have been incredibly easy. It's a game that brought new life to a system and to an old-school icon, not to mention cementing RARE's place in game development. LOVE. And I still haven't found 101%.

Bad control or not RE for the Cube is one of the best looking console games ever. It gets some extra attention for being the first of the GC exclusive RE games as well.

My Conker's Bad Fur Day is stolen. I shall have vengence.
Awesome choice, Waco. Sorry I didn't think of that myself.....
Strong choice, Adam....and it's a damn good game.

Thank you sir. I was worried that since I couldnt be by a PC today it might be gone... but I didn't see it being a first round choice for many. A favorite of mine however.
Well, Waco and Verbal go on my shit-list....

Honestly, I wrestled with whether to go with Half-Life over Baldur's Gate 2 for a couple of days, and in the end decided I had to go with the thrill of watching my band of heroes fight side by side with Drizzt and company against the vampires in the cemetary. And Planescape, while it's a beautiful and deep game, I've never been able to finish.

Kudos to Bret for taking the initiative and going this early. Hopefully, we can keep day two moving JUST as briskly as day one.

Also...every pick so far has been very inspired. Well done, gents.
Yes, inspired choices all. A pox on all of you who stole my choices, but I got my number one. Now if iI can get my number two choice yet Thursday, I'll be doing good.
Bret, I am going to kill you, slice a hole in your back, and rape it for a week for taking my beloved Star Control II.
Heh, heh, I knew that would be the case and I'm prepared for it. That game was fun on the Genesis, but it was a classic on the 3DO. They are actually remaking SC2 for the PC using the 3DO version as a model, with voices and everything. This needs to go in the most anticpated games thread, and it's free.
http://www.classicgaming.com/starcontrol/urquanmasters/

Trust me, your first pick engenders equivalent amounts of hate from my direction , that was my third pick. So while you're raping my back, I won't even give you a reach-around. wink
post #63 of 126
We could argue about this for days, I'm sure, but to me, Torment is easily the best CRPG of all time.

In fact, #2 and #3 on my imaginary "best crpg of all time list" are still on the board...

Interesting
Easily, Waco.

Next to Fallout, that is....and if Fallout is still around when my next pick comes up that's what i'm taking.

But it probably won't be now that i've mentioned it.... wink
post #65 of 126
All excellent picks so far, it's apparent there are no amateurs here.
I was torn between Ocarina of Time and Superman 64, to be honest.
Impressive picks all. Can't wait to see what later rounds have to offer....
everyone is doing good right now... no one has taken my second rounder.... yet....

Cheese Biscuits needs a hot lead salad right about now.

DAMN HIM for taking my beloved fighter.

Damn him to HELL.

As per my proclamation in the FAQ, his pick of Street Fighter 2 effectively disqualifies SUPER Street Fighter 2 (which was to be my 2nd round pick in a perfect world), all of the Championship and Turbo derivatives.

Bastard.
Tecmo Super Bowl, nice choice. One of my favorite football games ever. And no one I ever talk to seems to dig on Super Bowl, they've all just played Tecmo Bowl.

Bo Jackson is god. Don't front.
Kudos to Laugharn for his thematic draft idea and for picking one of Square's finest RPG.
I think I have an idea, yeah.
Surprised FFVIII was the first in the series to go. That game drove me fucking nuts with the button tapping every time I cast one of those long ass summon spells.
Micah, check your PMs.
Damn the NN guy for choosing X-COM: UFO DEFENSE!!!!! It's my number one game -- ever! Shit!

Damn the BS guy for choosing Star Control II!!!!! Though I enjoyed another "Star-" titled game a bit more.

Damn the DDR guy for choosing Chrono Trigger!!!!! Ah, but I have yet another SquareSoft game to pick.

Actually, the DAMNs to all of ya!

When we were 8, my friend and i stayed up for about two days playing this game. Twas my second choice...but alas...great pick.
Mikah, did my PM go thru, or did you just not get it in time? it didn't matter, my number 1 was still available, but I just wanna know if it worked, or if i should send it earlier next time.
Again, kudos to Rath and Dan for picking two fantastic Square RPGs. I will have to kill both of you, but excellent picks nonetheless.

Actually, these have all been some great picks. They've all been classic and interesting.

I got it...ONE MINUTE after I left for a long lunch, hence my inaction.

Try to get me before 11:30AM and after 1:00PM on weekdays.
My two and three are still available and I am pumped.

Some great choices here, especially Star Control. I was addicted to that game for a long time.
fucking shit, goldberg. i wanted ff7 in round 2. you ruined my life.

why wasn't this taken sooner????
Yeah I would have thought that due to its immense popularity, FFVII would have been one of the first to go. But it's not the best RPG ever. It's not even the best FF.

I knew there would be some discussion on this one. It actually was a tough choice for me between FFVII and another game, but between the two, I love FFVII more.

I think the best RPG title is heavily a matter of opinion. RPG is my favorite videogame genre. But I think Final Fantasy dominates as the best RPG series(though there are some that come awfully close).

I think out of all the FF games, FFVII is the best, though I know many love FFVI. But I think FFVI's cast of characters is much too long and you only care about only a few. VII just has more signifigance in the RPG genre. VII, I believe, is best selling PlayStation 1 game (I believe that the stat was that 1 in 3 PlayStation owners had the game). It has the best gameplay, it has the best characters, it has the best minigames, it has the best music, it has the best villain, it has the best story. It excels in almost every category.

It's ONLY weaknesses are Barrett is Mr. T, Chocobo Breeding can be slightly frustrating, and the graphics needed a bit more work (i.e. baseball bat-hands).
Nick Asshead Nunziata stole my pic. But I have a few classics up my sleve.
For the record:

Alternate Titles:

"Dune: The Battle for Arrakis" -- Sega Genesis (U.S. & European) title
"Dune II: Battle for Arrakis" -- European (Box, Jewel Case, CD & Main Menu) Title
"Dune 2: Battle For Arrakis" -- European release

Also: I strongly feel that Dune 2000 was just a rehash of the original. Mikah, thats your call. But having played both, they are very similar, the latter, having an upgraded graphics and playing engine.

Snowman Jazz is pretty slick, but I also gotta show some love towards Satan Slam and Splattercombo.

I've never played FFVIII all the way through...but it's certainly the most romantic and breathtaking game I've ever played.
I so enjoy pissing people off.
it wasn't my first video game boner, but when i cast ifrite for the first time in ff7, i obtained video game boner syndrome.

HATE.

The person who took A Link to the Past should be anally violated by a gang of Moblins and then fed to a Dodongo.

The Chrono Trigger pick inpires wrath as well, but since it's a theme, I feel better.

I can't believe my second pick is still available though.

Dan, i've never beaten a FF game except using Gameshark.....and that was FFX!

But to my credit, I got to the end/near the end of FF7-9 legitly.

Whaaa? I would much rather never play the game, like I haven't done with FFVIII, IX, and X, than cheat my way through an RPG. What would possess you to do that? That removes all the fun out of it, and if there was no fun to begin with, why the hell are you playing it?
