Rank the Superhero Movies

Given my upbringing, the action figures, the cartoons, comics, and everything in between, I'm an admitted whore for this genre. I usually like them, I find something to enjoy even in the bad ones, and nothing thrills me more than when one is really good. So in the spirit of X2, with everyone comparing and such, I thought it would be cool for people to come down on what their favorites are. What's the best? Mine are:

1)"X2"- Its new, but I've rarely had such an amazing time in the theater. This is the big epic I've always wanted, the huge cast of characters with endless references to the comics but never at the expense of just being a great film. I'm in love with it.

2)"Batman"- A classic of mine since I was little, it remains one of my favorites. The tone was right, Burton had some awesome shots, I loved Nicholson, the score is still unbeaten, and Keaton was just so damn cool.

3)"Superman:The Movie"- Beautiful movie, heart and soul, and surprisingly great effects that still hold up. Reeve is perfection, and Brando is a wonderful supporting character. The opening is so tragic, the death of Pa Kent still gets to me. Just a great one.

4)"X-Men"- I love the X-Men, I love that they focused so much on the characters and themes, and the serious tone throughout was great. Some say it diminishes now that we have "X2", but for me it feels like a great prologue to a bigger film to come. Some of the quiet moments are better than the sequel.

5)"The Rocketeer"- Love. It feels like an old film with its decency, the big Hollywood feel, and I think some of the action scenes are pretty damn cool. Timothy Dalton is wicked fun, Bill Campbell works for me and its just one of those films you love despite what anyone says.

6)"Spider-Man"- Wonderful action, heart, and a completely perfect adaptation of Spidey's themes. Maguire is wonderful. They nailed what Spider-Man should look like in action, and there's some brutal superhero action moments. Some parts don't work for me as much, and there's quite a few dumb moments that stick out on repeat viewings, but I still love it.

7)"Daredevil"- Affleck was a good Daredevil, they made it gritty, there's some great comic book imagery, and they really nailed his powers and condition in a way that made it clear. Some of the action was awesome, and I thought it was a lot of fun.

8)"Batman Returns"- Some have said that it screws Batman in favor of the villains, but in the scenes with Catwoman I think they get into his psyche more than ever. The unique relationship he has with these psychos is what sets Batman apart as a character, and this film showed that quite well. Batman looked better, it was weird and twisted, and I loved it.

9)"Blade II"- This is how superheroes should move and fight. The action in this film is maybe the best of any superhero film, its badass, and while I'll never have the attachment to Blade and the subsequent joy of seeing him onscreen as I do others, this film was a whole lot of fun.

10)"Superman II"- Great action, Terence Stamp is the man, and the plot is really epic in a lot of ways. Some of it got a little strange, but Superman giving up Lois to save the world was pretty impressive.

Whew! Okay, your turn.

"The Matrix"? Stretching a bit aren't we?

My favorite film is "The Usual Suspects" but I wouldn't put it on a "best comedies" list even though I think its funny as hell.
Hm.

1)Spider-Man - Raimi's a genius, and due to the great use of CGI, this is probably the closest I've seen to a comic book leaping onto the screen

2)X2 - yeah, it's just out this weekend; still, I thought the first was solid and this just blew it out of the water. Great cast + great director = much goodness (hm, similar formula for success in Spider-Man).

3)Batman - flawed? Sure. But Keaton nicely underplays as Bruce Wayne and Anton Furst's set design is unsurpassed.

4)Superman II - considering the limitations they were working under effects-wise, the fight between the Negative Zone escapees and Supes in downtown Metropolis holds up far better than it should. The Salkinds did the films a tad too broad for my taste, and the ending is cheesy, but this is the high point of the Superman franchise

5)X-Men - this is where the dropoff begins; as a matter of fact, I'm only going to 5, because then you start getting into dogshit like the 70s Captain America, the Schumacher-era Batman franchise, Corman's Fantastic Four, Lundgren as The Punisher, Hasslehoff as Nick Fury, etc. Ugh, now I feel dirty just for mentioning that stuff. Anyway, the first X-Men flick is a solid entry, nothing eye-popping. Maybe it doesn't quite catch the "magic" the way Donner's first Superman did, but that may be a function of the fact that I was 28 for X-Men and 5 for Superman. And the first Superman just lacks a worthy opponent - Hackman's Luthor is a dime-store version of the comic Luthor.

There you have it. That's my thoughts as well. X-Men, there were many things changed to make it work. Daredevil was a flat adaption that fell short, though it was close to the original source.

Spider-Man on the other hand....it's like an issue of Spider-Man was floating around in space, and then cosmic rays bombarded it and BAM! It CAME TO LIFE. That's why it's at my #1 spot.

2. X2-I don't care if it's a few days old, or a few years old. This movie went above and beyond catching the spirit of the comic.

3. Batman-Nicholson's Joker is still the BEST movie comic villain EVER. No one comes close. Though it's Batman's movie, it's the Joker that shines the most. Great atmosphere, sets, and acting.

We still have Hulk, which I'm sure will be my fave, but these are the 3 current that I think are the best.

::thumbs up::

The Matrix is a superhero film. Just because it wasn't based on an comic doesn't mean it is not a superhero film. If this thread was "Favorite Comic Adaptations" then it would not be appropriate.
1) Batman Returns

I know. Shoot me. I still think it was a fine piece of work. Michelle Pfeiffer was memorable in her role as Catwoman.

2) X2

Improved upon the original, added more characters while developing upon some, and generally had a more epic feel.

3) Spider-Man

A fantastic summer movie and filled with enough heart and moments that put a smile on my face. I eagerly await the sequel. I also enjoyed the CGI work as well. It just wouldn't have been as effective should it have all been wirework.

4) Batman

It can be a bit boring at times but for the most part, the flick showed us a darker look to comic-book movies. Jack Nicholson gets points as the Joker here.

5) Blade II

By a slim margin, only by villain. Wesley Snipes does well in his role (as usual) and the Reapers were great creatures. The story was a bit underdeveloped though and the CGI in some of the fight sequences was very noticeable.

6) X-Men

Most of the characters, sans Wolverine, were not utilized well and heck, the story just fell short. Yet, it served as a prelude for things to come.

7) Blade

The rave scene will always be in my mind. Love the whole look on that poor guy's face when the blood rolls on hi mand he realizes he's in a vamp club. Than who to come in than Blade. Kind of like X-Men in that lacking-the-epic-feel but still good.

Kind of hard to think of all the other Superhero flicks. I vaguely remember seeing the Superman films all the way through. I could say The Matrix as well but I don't really consider it a superhero film as much as I'd like to.

After the movie, I think. Although, depending on who you talk to, it owes a lot to The Invisibles.

There were several comics, that were extensions of the film, on the website after it's release. There has never been a print comic.

Batman: It's partly nostalgia, but the film also rocks time and time again.

The Punisher: My favorite actor + My favorite comic character = Me making no apologies.

Road to Perdition: The GN was a fun read but the film was smart to make Hanks less "Last Man Standing" and more a decent guy who happens to be a stone cold killer.

Spider-Man: I never read much Spider-Man but the film was perfect at showing what would happen to someone if they suddenly had super powers.

Superman: It ages like fine wine.

X2: The reasons are endless.

The Crow: Why isn't Michael Wincott working more?

Judge Dredd: Maybe I wouldn't like it if I'd ever read the comic, but as a Stallone film it is just a ton of fun.

Blade: I wasn't big on part 2 but I'll give it up for the original. The best Snipes' film in which he isn't a great base stealer.

Superman 2: A little too corny at times but there are still too many good moments to ignore.
If Tom Hanks was a super hero in Road to Perdition then I will take a shit in a bowl and eat it with a plastic spoon.
1. Chris Reeve as Superman

2. Superman 2

3. Flash Gordon (Sam Jones is as perfect casting as Chris Reeve was for Supes)

4. Spiderman TV series starring Nicholas Hammond (Spidey was the creepiest looking superhero EVER)

5. Batman animated TV series and movies

6. Hulk TV series, with Bixby/Ferrigno

7. Punisher, with Dolph

8. The Mask

9. Judge Dredd (not really a superhero but what ya gonna do)

10. Darkman

Robocop is one of the greatest movies ever made, but I think he's closer to Frankenstein than he is to any superhero.

Perhaps I was thinking more of the best comic book films instead of superhero films when I mentioned "Road to Perdition." But at least it is based on a comic while "The Matrix" is still just a movie, a good movie, but just a movie.
The Matrix = Superhero Movie

Road to Perdition would make my top ten comic adaptations list.
I would say that "The Matrix," like "Robocop" or "Darkman" is a movie with a lot of the elements that you'd often see in a comic book. Neo may be more of a superhero than Michael O'Sullivan but Sullivan did kill Paul Newman, which has got to count for something.
Fuck the Matrix! I don't recall Kee-new doing anything particularly super or heroic except kiss KD Lang on the mouth.

My list:

Superman: The Movie- Reeve is perfection. This flick had everything going against it and its all pulled of brilliantly. Many like to slag on Hackman's perf, but he's terribly entertaining and beats Nicholson's interpretation of the Joker all to hell. And that score, what a magnificent score.

Superman II: Finally, Supes gets to fight and boy does he ever. The single best comic book fight ever put to screen. The melees with the Krypto baddies and the budding romance with Lois Lane make this a keeper.

X2- Excellent every way around. I love Famke!

Robocop- Verhoven's masterpiece. Clarence Bonigger is one of THE best movie villians-ever uttering that iconic line, "Bitches Leave!"

Spider-man- Another one that had everything going against it. My only quibble is the forgetable score.

Swamp thing- A little seen movie based on a little seen comic book. For what it is, its nice. Although the final fight is almost anti-climatic.

Blade- Marvel got its movie-making rep back (or was it born from this flick?) with this stylish vamp killing classic.

Unbreakable- A modern day superhero flick that has Bruce Willis's best performance to date. Oscar should have went home with him that year. A misunderstood film that should have been a bigger hit than it was and its rejection by most of the genre crowd boggles the mind.

X-Men - Nothing great, but the characterizations are spot-on and the potential was there. A flawed flick, but lots of fun.

Honorable Mentions:

Batman/Superman: TAS- better in some respects to their live-action counterparts. This isn't just a goofy kids cartoon show; this is smart, stlyish animation.

Flash Gordon- Cheesy as all hell, but cheese taste good! Despite the critics, this flick works. The score by Queen is odd, but memorable.

The Rocketeer- This flick gets instant love just for the appearance of Nazis. Timothy Dalton rules as the movie actor/Nazi spy. Should have been a bigger hit than it was. Jenny Connelly is cute as the damsel in distress.

The Crowe- Brandon Lee was finally a star, but he was already dead by the time the film was released. Damn shame.

Batman did not make the list because the flick is not about him. It's about the villians. Each film got progressively worse. Although, Phfiffer is the only redeeming quality of Batman Returns since the script is all over the place and the Penquin is not only the lamest villian ever created, but Burton making him into a mutant added nothing.
Nicholson's Joker is a buffoon who listens to Prince, instead of the mean, psychotic S.O.B. who shot Babs Gordon and poisoned a pack of boy scouts for fun. *Yawn

Ok.

1. X2 - Awesome

2. Superman: The Movie - Still a great flick

3. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm - Best Batflick ever

4. X-Men - Underrated

5. Superman II - Flaky towards the end, but solid

6. Spider-Man - Holds up less now, but damn fun

7. Batman/Superman: World's Finest - Just awesome fun

8. Blade - Hundred times better than the shitty sequel

9. Batman Returns - The best live action Batflick by miles

10. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker - Fucked up for a kids flick

Oh and fuck Nicholson. He ain't the Joker.

10. Lester Burnham

9. Corbin Bernsen as "The Dentist"

8. Marty McFly

7. Brad Majors

6. Sully from Monsters Inc

5. "Hawkeye" Pierce

4. Bucky

3. The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came

Donnie Darko = Not a superhero, even though he got laid

Not too many people dug The Phantom, I guess. I thought it was a pretty groovy little rendering of the classic character, with strong direction from Simon Wincer and Billy Zane doing a great job of filling the purple suit. Plus a pre-Douglas CZJ. Rowrrr!

1. Spider-Man
2. X-Men 2
3. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
4. Batman Returns
5. X-Men

I can't even think of 10, really...but the top 2 could change with a second viewing of X-Men 2.

Almost forgot about Phantasm, fixed my list.

Also, if they ever made a film of The Killing Joke, and did it right, it would be THE BEST superhero film ever.

Some of these really have me scratching my head. Anyway here's my list.

Superman
Batman
X-2
Spiderman
Blade II
The Crow
Blade
Superman 2
Flash Gordon
Popeye

Edited cause Katanga reminded me of my love for the last 2.

Own "The Killing Joke," like "The Killing Joke," but Nicholson was an awesome Joker. He was far from a teddy bear, he tried to poison Gotham City twice. Once with the beauty products and later at the end with his balloons.

Joker shoots Bob.

The example you gave simply illustrates that The Joker was pretty well-written in that film. I don'r credit Nicholson with that. Someone else could have played a better Joker, without purposely scene-stealing. That's the point.
I thought he was a good Joker. Don't read the comics, although I did read the Killing Joke. But is that the Joker that the comics has always portrayed him as...that twisted? Or just recently?

The problem was, once Nicholson stole the scene (an easy feat, by the way, since the script was so poor) he did nothing with it. If you're gonna yell for my attention Jack, do something worth watching.

As for the topic at hand, the best superhero films are Superman, Spider-Man, and Unbreakable. They're all equally good.
Ironically enough, the single greatest scene from any superhero movie came from a different film- Superman 2.
"General Zod, would you care to step outside?"
Still gives me chills since I first saw it in the theater.
The real list...

1. Spider-Man - Has lost a TAD on repeated, REPEATED viewings, but thats to be expected.
Goes down also as probably the greatest theater
experience of my life. The closest thing I think we'll ever see to a comic brought to life.

2. X2 - Just everything I ever wanted in an X-Men movie. Thats basically it.

3. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm - The only bat-flick that really touches me, in the way I think they all should have. Of course it goes without saying that the animated series itself was always nothing short of brilliance.

4. The Crow - An absolute classic. I have to say though, with all due respect to the very talented Brandon Lee, I think the movie itself does not get the attention it deserves, and for many is held only as Lee's tragic final film.

5. The Rocketeer - Much love, much love. One of my all-time favs in any genre, just a feel-good, charming little movie that has always been offensively under-exposed.

6. X-Men - A real solid picture. I'll always have great respect for it.

7. Superman - I'll be honest, not being a child of this particular era at first made it somewhat difficult for this movie to burrow its way into my heart, until I saw it one day with new eyes. It really is a masterpiece that does hold together over time.

8. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker - Never being a HUGE fan of the Beyond series, mainly because of what I saw as a surplus of higly uninteresting characters and villians. But this movie brought it all together for me. I'm a sucker for Hamill's Joker, and this was probably his best.

9. Batman - I can't explain why, but with this movie I set aside my fanboy nitpicking and put down the Geek-Bible. I let my inhibitions run wild, and for 2 hours I couldn't care less that the Joker I'm watching isn't Alan Moore's Joker, or Frank Miller's Joker. I'm having a good time watching the movie. I'll page through The Killing Joke again afterwards.

10. Superman II - If you love Supes I, you love Supes II. I can't watch 'em separately. Even if it does take a day...

How is the Rocketeer (a great flick btw) a superhero movie?

I forgot to list the animated films in my initial list because I was just focusing on live action.

"Batman:Mask of the Phantasm" is an amazing film, possibly the best Batman film although I find them difficult to compare. It was surprisingly deep, tough, and very very sad. The action was gritty, the Phantasm the best villain yet created by the Dini/Timm team.

I mean, remember the ending? Joker has never been better in any film or incarnation IMO. Such a twisted and creepy way to go as he cackles uncontrollably as Phantasm disappears. Very creepy, and Hamill's best moment.

A great film, and while "Return of the Joker" was a good one, overall "Phantasm" was a lot better. I saw it on its opening Christmas Day when I was 10 and it screwed me up. I knew I liked it, but it was unnerving to me at that age. Such a downbeat ending, so violent, and downright scary. I'm still impressed they had the balls to do that, and on Christmas no doubt!

Didn't he seem like a superhero? He had the costume, the secret identity, the saving people using "superpowers". The big villain, the big scheme, etc. Plus he was based on superhero-style comic strip I believe.
