2. Shrimp Toast/Prawn Toast (I could LIVE off this stuff)

3. Chicken Chow Mein, with hot sauce

4. Kung Pao prawns/shrimp

P.S. You don't have to poison yourself with MSG. Either ask them to cook without it, or find a place that doesn't use it (like a local Panda Express)

If you can find it, nothing tops a restaurant that has good shrimp egg-foo-young. I'm also partial to pan-fried dumplings, combination Lo Mein, and various spicy tofu dishes. There are also some tofu rolls that are a part of the offerings at a local place's Dim Sum that are AMAZING.

But I actually prefer Vietnamese food, specifically Bun (Vermicelli) with charcoal broiled pork and egg rolls. Droooool.

PF Chang's and most other chain restaurants are SHIT. Overpriced, bland stuff. Seek out the small mom and pop restaurants that have more Chinese people than any other ethnicity in them, and avoid chain restaurants like the plague. You will be rewarded.

I agree about the mom and pop stores with real chinese people. Its tough here where I am at but we have some great places too. Pick up Stix being one of em.

The "authentic" restaurants are always better. One tip though: find someone who speaks Chinese, so that you know what the hell you're ordering ("dog" jokes aside)

There are so many, it's hard to just pick five. But, here goes, in no particular order:

Pot Stickers
Hot and Sour Soup (especially from this one local place)
Kung Pao Spicy Beef
General Tso's Chicken
Ginger Squid

On a side note, there is an amazing Dim Sum place (on Buford Highway, I think) in Atlanta. A friend took me there one Friday afternoon, we were the only people in there who spoke English. Any of you Atlanta chewers know the place I'm talking about? If so, what is the name of the place?

Just because Chinese people go there doesn't mean its any fucking good. Ala half the places in chinatown here in Portland. Otherwise: (I've gotta list the place that sells the shit because no two chinese food places cook anything remotely in the same fashion)

1. August Moon's Cashew Chicken
2. Panda Express Beef with Potato (the potato is just french fries tossed into the mix but damn if it isn't tasty)
3. Canton Grills Pork Fried Rice mixed with Pork Egg Foo Young. Egg Foo Young is always best at shitty chinese dives for some odd reason.
4. August Moon's Moo Shoo Pork
5. Chu's Crab Puffs are fucking heaven.

On a side note, but not Chinese, Pho Van has some damn good Pho and avocado milkshakes.

Anything that passes health codes. In Topeka that's relevant.

I'm a sucker for egg drop soup and well-cooked chicken lo-mein.

Kung Po Beef (thats how its spelled on all the menu's i've seen here)

Singapore Vermicelli/Nasigoren Chow Mein/Singapore Chow Mein with Rice Noodles (same thing different names in the few places I order from depending on where I am.)

Sweet and Sour Chicken

Beef and Mushrooms

Crispy Chili Beef

are my regulars, but its dependant on how many of us are sharing and who im sharing with, if its just me I usually just get an order of some kind of fried rice and some kind of sauce.

Taking a cue from wayne's world...

The cream of sum yung guy.

Taking a dive here with the way these menu orders are spelled:
Yung-Chu Fried Rice
Cantoneese Style Chow Mein
Lemon Chicken

In a recent turn, I've been tempted by my friends to dive into the realm of Vietnamese food. Wow. I could live off the Beef Tenderloin Noodle Soup. Just wow.

Chinese food and the stuff that you get in non-chinatown chinese resturants are two different things. They are so different that I regard them almost as two different types of food. Real chinese food does not have sauce and gravy leaking out of the cartons in a waterfall. It's quite modest at times which is why it might seem like it doesn't taste as good as the slop sold at resturants catering to americans.

I enjoy both, but you gotta see the difference. Dim Sum is a good example of great chinese food that's not overyly exaggerated with spices and sauce.
