A friend at work lent me this movie last night (his motives scare the hell out of me now, GC will know what I'm on about!), and I just finished re-reading GC's excellent review on Creature Corner.

And she's exactly right! This is a film that just crawls right out of the television and embeds itself into your head. Some of the images and sounds are going to stick with me a long, long, time. The final death scene alone has really got into my skin...

GC pretty much summed it up, but I have two tiny gripes with the film. Since I saw this on video (Buying the DVD this lunchtime!) I got a clear view of most of the subtitles, which is where the source of my problems lie.

1) BAD PLACEMENT of subtitles - There are a lot of scenes where the subtitles just become totally obscured by lampshades, white dresses and other things. Whilst I'm sure the producers of the video will say that the filmmakers didn't expect the film to go abroad, so weren't careful when filming shots, I place the blame squarely on the subtitlers. It's just plain lazy not to change the colour of the subtitles or move them when the frame might obscure the words. Still, at least it wasn't dubbed.

2) My second gripe involves a minor spoiler, nothing too major but if you want to know NOTHING about the film, don't read on.

The film lost me for about a ten minute period when 'all of a sudden' we discover that Ryuji is psychic. It's not done in a twist or suprise fashion, it's just mentioned matter of factly. Since Ryuji had been in the film for ages, and NO-ONE had mentioned it, I was a bit baffled by it. To be honest, I think the film would have benefited from mentioning this 'power' earlier on, since it comes in handy during the final few days.

But, small gripes aside, this is a truly chilling film. Another one that works REALLY well on the small screen, and a LOT better than the Blair Witch Project, for low-budget terror, IMHO.

Any of you guys got around to seeing this one yet?
