Now I don't hang out with Ebert or Maltin or anything, but my friends just don't seem to get this movie. They've went from stating it was, "...boring. That movie sucks..." to saying that it was, "...gross, dude. That guy wants to get it on with the little girl.". Well, to each his own, but to me there is actually a little bit more in this movie.
The whole movie is just down to earth. All of the character's can be related to. There are no astronauts here, no super cops, just regular, flawed people. Written very honestly, it tells the story of a pianist who comes home for his high school reunion and to contemplate staying with his girlfriend in a relationship that is getting dreadfully close to "the big question". Its a look at relationships that doesn't have all of the fairy tale ending, theater sappiness (although it doesn't have a bad ending either, it just has an ending ).
There's not much plot here. It's a simple story about life and relationships, but it never comes out and says it. While watching you never feel like you are being lectured on females or what is important. Instead, you are able to look at what the characters in the story are doing wrong and make your own judgement.
I list it with such movies as High Fidelity and The Breakfast Club, where you are getting something out of it, but you are not being beaten over the head by the moral of the story. I think it's a contemporary classic that has been overlooked, mainly by being labeled as a comedy. I mean, it has it's moments, but you really shouldn't go into this expecting it to be The Big Lebowski. Maybe I have odd taste.....or maybe......maybe people just don't get it.
hell, I've been known to look into things too much.
