Bridget Jones' Diary

Dear Diary,
Went to see Bridget Jones' Diary, a v. good movie.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. When the book became a bestseller and was so widely discussed when it came out it was only a matter of time until a movie was made. I had actually listened to the audiobook and thought it was hilarious so I was looking forward to this movie.

I thought that the casting was really well done with Renee Zellweger as frazzled and neurotic Bridget, Hugh Grant as her sleazy boss, and Colin Firth as an uptight, too-perfect childhood acquaintance.

The entire movie is pretty much one embarassment after another for Bridget with a few triumphs here and there. In the end, of course, everything works out satisfactorily for out heroine. How could it be a romantic-comedy without a happy ending? But for some reason, even though the ending reminded me a lot of Someone Like You it just didn't seem as false to me. Maybe because the characters were more real? I don't know. The whole movie kind of reminded me of a Jane Austen novel.

Anyway, is this a chick flick? Definitely. But if you have to see one this one is hilarious.

Went to go see Bridget Jones diary, as well.

Very funny little film... It's set in that fictional London that viewers of Four Weddings and Notting Hill might recognise. It snows during the winter (not turning into some brown unrecognisable slush), despite the terrible jobs all the main characters have everyone has a house in the middle of London with more than 3 rooms and everyone is incredibly posh.

Still, there are some excellent performances, Renee turns out a competent English accent (she drifts from one end of the social scale to the other, but we can forgive her that!) and there are some sidesplittingly funny moments (the street-fight between Hugh Grant and Colin Firth is worth the price of admission alone, I was crying with laughter during that bit!).

It's definately what I would class as a 'chick-flick', but after the missus had waffled on about what a great book it was, I decided to trust her better judgement and go see the film. Speaking as someone who normally can't stand these British comedies (Full Monty is the major exception), I must say I was pleasently surprised!
