I've mentioned in places before that I have been a Matrix apologist. It was the first film that ignited my fire for movies, and it was my greedy desperate search for sequel info that revealed the internet movie culture to me.

Unfortunately I started out with AICN so I missed all of this. I used to read AICN the most, sometimes balancing out it's retarded giddyness with a nice batch of CHUD cynicism. Evetually AICN got more and more stupid while CHUD got more and more balanced, and here I came. It took even longer for me to hit the boards...

Now that I'm here, I'm almost frightened to go back and read these pages and pages of comments by people I (now) know about my former obsession. The Matrix trilogy wasn't mentioned that much by people by the time I got here on the boards, so it will be an odd melding. The Matrix and my love for it has remained muchly separate from my more rational movie love that CHUD and the Chewers have helped me to cultivate.
You should. You'll find a lot of love for the film and some amazing analyses.

I got the box for free, but I haven't watched any of the sequels since getting wickedly stoned and enjoying Reloaded, and re-watching Revolutions and seeing the good and the bad. I would never back down from my initial reaction to Reloaded, which carries over to Revoutions, which is that whatever the Wachowski's took from getting The Matrix through the system, they forgot, like M Night with Unbreakable, and so they made little concessions in their follow ups, where - sadly - the likely Hollywoodization of The Matrix is what makes it effective. It's both a ride and a thinking man's ride movie. With the sequels, there's just no balance to that.

I agree there were plenty of carefree cultural reference drops, but I don't agree they were encouraging analysis. It felt at the time -- and still does now -- that they were just tossing stuff at the wall to see what stuck.

After the original Matrix I remember thinking... How can they go anywhere with this, Neo is god of the Matrix.

So when Reloaded turned up and Smith was back and Neo was still doing kung fu, I thought it was stupid. Neo had been nerfed as an excuse to still have more kung fu fights.

And while there were cool bits (I'm always a sucker for giant robot fights) the films logical consistancy had been lost for me. This was only further damaged by other strange things such as Smith in the real world, and Neo's powers in the real world.

It's sad to say that this trilogy and the prequels did a lot to dampen the enthusiasm I have for upcoming films. (Note: I watched EP III this morning, so I'm a bit bitter)

I must be one of the few people left who still has unmitigated shameless love for the entire matrix saga start to finish.

I just watched Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind for the first time and I wouldn't be surprised if Wachowskis were heavily influenced by this when the wrote the end of Matrix Revolutions.

Both have the humans fighting against a superior alien enemy and in the final fight the humans are all crowded together in a small shelter when the enemy force is rushing in. Both have the hero sacrifice themselves to bring upon a truce. Both have the hero's dead body carried by the enemy's tentacles. The sentinels even kinda look like the ohms of Nausicaä with their big red eyes.

The first thing I thought after seeing the first Matrix was that they're were trying to make a live-action anime. Convoluted pseudo-philosophizing and all.
