Least Favorite Moment: Robocop franchise

Thread Starter
I avoided two and three due to word of mouth, so can't pick a moment from there.

And I happen to think that Robocop is the best that Vorhoeven has ever been, or ever will be. Can't think of a single missed shot in #1.
2 wasn't so bad, but not nearly as good as 1.

3 on the other hand was just horrible. The worst part: When ED-209 was beaten by a little girl!
Two is king of the hill, dammit! The fight at the end ought to be included in every movie ever made. Casablanca shoulda been that good!
Robocop 3 is miles above the steamin' shitfest which is 2.

Single biggest insult ever?

The choir chanting "ROBOCOP!" during 2's end credits...

But part 2 had a great villain in Cain, who later becomes Robocop2. That was a real kick ass robot.

I used to always buy the comic book adaptations of movies before they came out, usually because I was too young to go see them, and I`d have to wait for my dad to rent these movies on tape. I was so pumped for Robocop 2 due to its awesome comic book adaptation, and when an uncle gave me a promotional copy of the movie before it even hit stores, I was in heaven. On the other hand, the Robocop 3 comic was pure shite, mostly due to its lame story. So when I saw the movie, I knew I was already in for a disappointment. The third movie seemed like it was trying to be more of a comic book rather than a semi-intelligent satire on our society. When Robocop gets a jet pack, the trillogy just sunk as low as it could possibly go.

The only disappointment in the first movie is the Criterion DVD of it. It has absolutely no great extras, which are expected of Criterion, the transfer is fair, and it cost me $65.

Criterion's laserdisc presentation is quite possibly the best production of its kind. Animated menus and everything.

Worst moment?

Probably the introduction of the NINJA.

A FUCKING NINJA?!!!

And when he gets half his head hacked off, the make-up effect is so laughable, he looks like is suddenly shaped like a ham.

Robocop 2 could quite possibly be one of the WORST major studio films of all time. At a price tag of $60 mil-it is harsh.

Robo 3 is so terrifyingly LOW budget that it too is shlock.

The only worthwhile TV moment was supplied by Commander Cash.

I've heard the UK-produced TV series was excellent...

I dunno HAM, I kinda liked the ninja guy and his Mark Gor impression...

Kid reprogramming ED209 with a laptop.

Jesus, Kate. What made you dig up THIS thread?

I just saw it somewhere (not sure where, think I was searching the forums?) and my RoboCop3 rage started to bubble up anew

EDIT: RC2 is not all bad, there are some cool elements/moments

Not only that, but she bumped it to add something mentioned in the SECOND POST.

3 is worse than 2, but 2 is a fucking mess. Some great moments though, and amazing stop-motion.

In...Robocop 2, The lack of a score by...Basil Poledouris, is galling.
Yeah, fleed's right. Weird how Poledouris came back for three. I love the fucked up ninja hamface in 3, so they didn't have to splitscreen it and could just slap some bad prosthetics on another stuntman's face for the Robo-vs-two-identical-robots climactic fight scene.

"Robocop 2" has the new Robocop prototypes sequence, which is fucked up.
Worst moment goes to the Frank Miller comic book series, no doubt about it.

Salt in wound: Rosenman's actual use of a chorus chanting "Robocoppppp!!!"
One of RoboCop 2's* saving graces: Galyn Görg, who, um, helped shape my manhood during the always difficult road from puberty.

* A flick I genuinely enjoy a slight notch below Part 1, but is nowhere near as bad or "a mess" as it's been said here.

I always thought it was weird that of the three genre sequels Irvin Kershner directed (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN and ROBOCOP 2,) the first one had one of the best scores of all time and the latter two had some of the worst scores of all time.

I know someone out there went in and created a fan edit of NEVER SAY NEVER CAN using classic John Barry music from other Bond movies, resulting in a notably improved experience. I'd like to see someone do the same with ROBOCOP 2 and Basil Poledouris' scores from the first and third films.

And for me, the salt in the wound is the way ROBOCOP 2 composer Leonard Rosenman arrogantly bashed Poledouris' music in interviews. This from the guy whose music always sounded like score from the knot-tying sequence in a late '50's Coast Guard recruitment film.

I'm guessing I'm the only one who thought Robocop with a jetpack was fucking retarded, huh?
Nope, you're not the only one. As soon as I saw the thread title that was what came to my mind.
Well, to be fair, the toyline & merchandise guys initially thought so too, but then quickly dismissed the idea when they thought about selling the easily-destroyable pimpmobile along with it.

Robocop 2 is immensely watchable and I still find the 10 year-old kid drug-dealing angle sort of creepy.

Least favorite moment of Robocop 3- Jill Hennessy's mom jeans.
I liked Robocop 2. The above mentioned sequence where they are making a new Robocop is just brilliant.

I finally saw 3 this year and wish I could remove it from my brain. Robocop with a Jet Pack and Machine Gun hand just screams "Designed to sell toys" at me.
It's hard to figure out the exact timeline, but the Robocop vs. Terminator comic book series came out in 1992. Robocop 3 came out in 1993. In the comic book series, Robocop does indeed have a jet pack and machine gun hand during the scenes set in the far Terminator future. Both RvT and the first draft of R3 were written by Frank Miller.

Frank Miller doesn't seem like the type to write for toys...unless someone told him to.

Yeah, the machine-gun hand was pretty lame. I thought he could do just about anything with his automatic handgun. I still think the Rocket Scientist/Donut Shop gag in 'Cop 3 was a highlight in the whole series. The remaining 80+ minutes are worthless though.

I liked 2 better than 3. Actually I really enjoyed 2 and found the third one completely unwatchable. Maybe I'll give it another chance some day. In the mean time, enjoy the worst of Robocop here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNybksDGjcE
post #26 of 31
Come on guys, 3 is a shitfest from start to finish.

A blue Robo befriends orphans and flies.

Enough already; can we not all just agree that Robocop 2 is a guilty pleasure and that Robocop 3 is a shitfest abomination that lived?

And to the person who reckoned that the TV series might have been good, all I can say is that my mom liked it. And her favourite TV show ever is Nikita. does that tell you enough?
Robocop 3 was so bad, Nancy Allen insisted on getting killed in the first reel and Peter Weller said "nah, I'm too busy."
Robocop 3... the only good bit is the OCP guys jumping out the window, and Johnson's still around.

THe TV show, the live action one that replaced his gun with a can of shaving cream (or foam that could encase the baddies like a creamy set of handcuffs, instead of delicoius squibs)

I also remember a cartoon series that had lasers and ED-260 (an upgraded pet of the re-occurring evil-doctor character)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNaT0WDPNQY

There was a 2nd cartoon, but I never saw that.
Did anyone ever watch that Sci-Fi miniseries? All I remember is flashbacks to Murphy having an asshole partner that eventually gets made into another Robocop. Pretty bad.

Three movies, a live action show, two cartoons and a mini-series. How can anyone be outraged by the idea of a remake?
