The Big Sleep

I bought this on DVD the other day and it's terrific. There's a reason why this film is a classic, classic performances, superb dialogue and great direction. I know the rumors and stories behind this film like the famous ending where they phoned up Chandler to find out who did it and he replied 'How should I know, you figure it out' and hangs up. Bacall having to reshoot because there were fears she was going to be upstaged by Martha Vickers, I think Martha got the better role though.

What else can be said about this classic film noir, Bogie's never been this cool and Bacall is just stunning, an absolute goddess. The way these two play off each other is amazing, they rattle off the dialogue like pro's. Martha Vickers almost did steal the film from Bacall, her performance was great but I put it down to her having the showier role, Bacall just played it cool. The plot almost makes no sense and you could make an argument for style over substance, but what style.

Double post!

Ignore it, it's just a replicant.

I love this film.

Blade Runner has an homage to it when Deckard changes his voice to interrogate Zhora, which is based off Philip Marlowe putting on the glasses and showing off his teeth to talk to the woman in the office.

The dialogue and banter in this is priceless. Now go watch The Big Lebowski.

Just watched this, the dialogue and the delivery of it is absolutely electric. I was almost in a marveled daze as great line came after great line in rapid succession.

I also liked the Bogarts' character kept saying he liked Elisha Cook Jr.'s character after I'd just seen him spend a fair chunk of the maltese Falcon humiliating Elisha Cook Jr.'s charcter and treating him like a bitch.

But yeah, dialogue. Amazing.

One of the best film noirs there is....despite the fact that the plot doesn't make a lick of sense.

The pre-release version also included on the DVD makes more sense but has less Bogart-Bacall fireworks. Personally, I could care less about the plot in The Big Sleep. I'm there for the great dialogue and just how damn cool everything is.

Once I've built my time machine, the first thing I'm doing (after killing Hitler, of course) is seducing Martha Vickers and Dorothy Malone.

Martha Vickers really reminds me of Kate Winslet, it almost feels like Kate went back in time and auditioned for the role under another name.

If you haven't, EVERYONE should read Raymond Chandler. His Marlowe stories are absolutely sublime. It's not just the wit and style of his prose, it's how effortless it seems.
